Norman Reynolds (born March 26, 1934 in London ) is a British film architect with an outstanding career in Hollywood cinema.

Life

Born in London to Welsh parents, he trained at an art school in Wales . Reynolds then found employment in a London advertising company and made early contacts in film as an assistant at the British branch of MGM . Initially, Reynolds was involved in such films as Fireball , Battle of Britain , Assault Troop Gold, and Zeppelin , as an equipment assistant or simple architect . He also designed the decorations for the popular British television crime series Simon Templar . He was supported by his young Welsh colleague Leslie Dilley .

At the beginning of the 1970s, Reynolds was able to establish himself as chief architect. His buildings for Richard Fleischer's Sarah Bernhardt biography The Incredible Sarah earned Reynolds his first Oscar nomination in 1976 . He was then brought to Hollywood to design the buildings for the extremely elaborate science fiction film Star Wars . Dilley came with him. For the performance shown in Star Wars , Reynolds, Dilley and their colleague Jonathan Barry each received an Oscar.

In the period that followed, Norman Reynolds, initially together with Dilley, designed the sets for a wealth of glossy productions in the classic Hollywood style. These included the comic strip adaptations Superman , Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark , for which Reynolds received his second Oscar, and The Realm of the Sun , George Lucas ' Star Wars sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return the Jedi Knight as well as the third part of the Alien series, for which Norman Reynolds created a clammy atmosphere of spartan, artificial light-cold workshops.

At the turn of the millennium, Reynolds, now 65 years old, withdrew from active production design.
