Richard Edmund Williams (born March 19, 1933 in Toronto , Ontario - † August 16, 2019 in Bristol ) was a Canadian animator , director and film producer , who was best known for the film Bad Game with Roger Rabbit , in which he played for the Animation was responsible. Because of his work he spent a long time in England, where he lived in Bristol. Williams was a three-time Oscar winner.

Life

Williams moved from Canada to Spain and worked there as a painter until, fascinated by the possibilities of animation , decided to make a film himself. To implement his plan, he went to London in 1955 . There he financed his film The Little Island through animated television advertising . Due to the success of this film, which was nominated for the British Film Academy Award , he was able to set up his own studio, which in turn received various awards and was also commercially successful. The animators employed there included the former Disney employees Art Babbitt (creator of Goofy ) and Milt Kahl (animated Shir Khan ).

He received for the film A Christmas Carol the 1973 Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film . In 1983 he was awarded an Emmy for Ziggy's Gift . Williams received an Oscar in 1989 for Best Visual Effects with Roger Rabbit , the Special Oscar , the BAFTA Award for Best Visual Effects and a Special Award at the Evening Standard British Film Awards , and in 1990 the Saturn Award for the same film best special effects .

In 2001 his book The Animator's Survival Kit was published. A 4-day masterclass filmed in New York at Blue Sky Studios was then released on 16 DVDs with a running time of over 10 hours.

Private life

Richard Williams had six children from different marriages and lived in Bristol with Imogen Sutton , his fourth wife .
