Devdas ( Hindi : देवदास , Devadās ) is a Bollywood film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay . The leading roles are played by Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas, Aishwarya Rai as Paro, whom he unhappily loved, and Madhuri Dixit as the prostitute Chandramukhi.

action

Devdas grew up as the son of wealthy parents. Paro, the neighbor's daughter, grows up on the property next door. Both spend a happy childhood together, until Devdas is sent by his father as punishment for 10 years to London, where he becomes a lawyer.

When Devdas returns, his family, especially his mother, await him exuberantly. She asks the other family members to close their eyes so that she will be the first to see her son for the first time in 10 years. They are all the more disappointed when Devdas first greets Paro in their house. Paro, longingly waiting for her boyfriend, reveals to Devdas that she lit an oil lamp for him after he left for London. The flame is a symbol of solidarity and Paro made sure that the flame continued to burn for 10 years. But Devdas' parents may not agree to an official wedding, they think that Paro's family should be settled below their own social class, especially since Paro's mother used to be an actress and had debts.

A conflict ensues when Devdas 'mother publicly humiliates Paros' mother. The latter then vows to marry Paro richer within 7 days than the Devdas' family will ever be, and keeps their word.

Instead of the feelings of Devdas and Paro, only power, revenge and hate play a role. But also the love of children for their parents. So Devdas bows to his parents' wishes and pressure and refuses Paro the marriage, even when she asks him to. Humiliated by Devdas 'father, Paro leaves Devdas' house.

Paro marries a forty-year-old widower who needs a mother for his three big children. He tells her on their wedding night that he only married her so that the palace would have a mistress. He would never be able to love Paro because his love is for his late first wife.

Devdas hastily leaves his parents' house, takes refuge in alcohol and in a dubious milieu, where he meets the courtesan Chandramukhi, who immediately falls head over heels in love with him. But Devdas despises her and her job and with the image of the perfect woman, who for him can only be Paro, he wants to punish himself. So he keeps coming to Chandramukhi's house to get drunk and to remind people how much he hates the world and the circumstances. Devdas sinks more and more into alcoholism, which he brings about himself almost compulsively and with full consciousness in order to destroy himself. Even when Paro asks him to stop drinking, he refuses to do so.

When Paro declines the offer to leave with him, Devdas promises to come to Paro's house before he dies to see her again.

But both remain connected, despite all strokes of fate. When Paro finally meets Chandramukhi, the women are suddenly connected in their love for Devdas and even become friends. At a party, a relative names Paros Chandramukhi as a whore. After the argument between the two of them, Paro and her mother-in-law get into a scandal, because the offended man tells the family about the friendship between Paro and Devdas. Paro then confesses to Devdas in the presence of her husband and the entire family. As a punishment, she is no longer allowed to leave the house.

Devdas falls ill as a result of his debauchery, he leaves Chandramukhi, whose love he has already returned almost tenderly, and makes his way back to his hometown to see Paro one last time. His condition rapidly deteriorates on the way. He still makes it to the threshold of her house. Meanwhile Paro hears her name breathing faintly a few times and recognizes Devdas' voice. She knows he's come to keep his promise. She tries to run out of the house, but is prevented by her husband who closes the gate. Exactly at the moment when the gate closes, Devdas' heart stops beating, Paro collapses behind the gate and the flame that has been burning continuously for 10 years goes out with it.
