Brijmohan Maharaj ( Birju Maharaj ; born February 4, 1938 ) is an Indian singer, choreographer , composer , musician and poet .

Maharaj comes from a family of Kathak dancers. He was initially tutored by his father Achhan Maharaj , with whom he had performed since he was seven. Birju died when Birju was nine years old and his uncles Shambhu and Lachhu Maharaj took over his education. From the age of 13 he had professional dance lessons, and at the age of twenty-six he won the Sangeet Natak Akademi dance prize . He represented India at international festivals, toured Russia, the USA, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Burma and Sri Lanka and became the leading exponent of the Kalka-Bindadin- Gharana of the Kathak Dance. Among other things, he taught at the Sangit Bharati in New Delhi and the Sangeet Natak Akademi and opened his own dance school.

In addition to ballets such as Phag Lila , Kumar Samabhavam , Govardhan Lila , Malati Madhav and Shan-E-Awadh , Maharaj also composed and choreographed film sequences for Satyajit Ray's film Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977) and worked as a singer and choreographer on films such as Dil To Pagal Hai - My heart goes crazy (1997), Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Devdas - flame of our love (2002) with. In addition to percussion instruments such as tabla and naal , Maharaj also plays string instruments such as sitar , sarod , sarangi and violin. As a poet he published under the pseudonym Brijshyam . Among other awards, he received the Padma Vibhushan (1986), honorary doctorates from Banaras Hindu University and Indira Kala Sangeet University, and in 1998 the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna .
