Andrew Lesnie

Andrew Lesnie (born 1956 in Sydney - † April 27, 2015 ) was an Australian cameraman.

Live and act

Lesnie graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School . While still a student, he began his career in the film business in 1977 as an assistant in the film Laura's Girl Years by Bruce Beresford . The following year he worked as a camera assistant on the horror film Patrick by Richard Franklin .

Lesnie was named Cameraman of the Year by the Australian Cinematographers Society in 1993 for his work on Seduction Behind Monastery Walls. Working on a documentary about the shooting of Mad Max II brought him in contact with George Miller , for whose production company Kennedy-Miller he did the camerawork for the television series Bodyline (1984) and later the film A Pig Called Babe (1995) and the sequel to Piggy Babe in the Big City (1998).

Lesnie was best known for his collaboration with director Peter Jackson , with whom he made eight films. Lesnie received an Oscar for best camera in 2002 for his camerawork on the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Companions . In 2004 he received the British Academy Film Award ; he also received an award at the Online Film Critics Society Awards . Lesnie filmed the film trilogy The Hobbit for Jackson at high frame rate . This was the first feature film to be released in the HFR-3D format.

Lesnie lived in Sydney , Australia. He died on April 27, 2015 at the age of 59 as a result of a heart attack . His last film work was Russell Crowe's directorial debut The Promise of a Life (2014).
