Kenneth Lonergan (born October 16, 1962 in New York City , New York ) is an American screenwriter and film director .

Life

Lonergan began writing while he was still at the private Walden School. He graduated from New York University and worked as a speechwriter for the Environmental Protection Agency . His film career began in 1999 with the script for the comedy Reine Nervensache with Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal in the leading roles. The film was a commercial success and so Lonergan was subsequently commissioned to write the script for The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle .

In the same year, Lonergan first directed. Based on his own script, the film drama You Can Count on Me was produced by Martin Scorsese . The film was a great success and earned it numerous film awards and nominations for the Golden Globe and the Oscar . In 2002 he worked again with Scorsese and wrote the screenplay for his feature film Gangs of New York , for which he received his second Oscar nomination.

In 2005 filming began on his second directorial work, Margaret . However, the film with Anna Paquin , Matt Damon and Matthew Broderick was overshadowed by a court battle and could not be released until 2011.

For the drama Manchester by the Sea (2016) with Casey Affleck in the lead role, Lonergan received 2017 Oscar nominations in the categories of director and original screenplay and won a trophy for the screenplay.

In 2020 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .
