action

Siblings Samantha and Terry Prescott were orphaned as children due to their parents' car accident. Several years later, Samantha is a single mother working for a bank as a credit advisor. Samantha's 8-year-old son Rudy does not know his father and imagines that he is a hero. Meanwhile, Samantha renews her relationship with a friend who later surprises her with a marriage proposal. Her new married boss, Brian Everett, is intrigued by her and has an affair with her.

Terry befriends his nephew. After a while he brings Rudy to his father. There he lets himself be provoked, beats the man and is arrested. Samantha brings her brother and son home; a little later Terry leaves.

Reviews

Carla Meyer wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of November 17, 2000 that the film was an "intensely moving family drama" and was one of the best films of the year. He offers a “quiet and heartbreaking look at the dynamics of a family” . It is difficult to say which of the two main presentations is more remarkable. Rory Culkin and Matthew Broderick were also mentioned by the "uniformly good" cast.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a “theatrical film-made portrait of a small town and family whose content and form were all too casually staged” . Only the actors would stand out “from the work without concept” .

Karl-Heinz Schäfer wrote in the magazine Cinema that the “beautiful, touching family drama” tells “about the little things in life” . It shows "everyday types" and "a short brawl as the highest degree of external drama, otherwise people who are looking for the meaning of life - namely affection, understanding and tenderness" ; the “sincerity” is a “difficult special effect” that Lonergan has mastered. The film hit the American critics "right in the heart" .
