geography

The Village of Margaretville is entirely within the Town of Middletown , on the edge of Catskill Park and on the East Branch Delaware River . According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.8 km², all of which is land.

history

In 1708 Anne of England allocated the land to Johannes Hardenbergh and his companions with the Hardenburgh patent . Robert R. Livingston divided 897 km² of it between his family members. In 1763 Harmanus DuMond received 75 acres from Livingston "across from Margaretville" .

A map by Will Cockburn from 1765 shows a road from Marbletown to Pakatakan, near what is now Margaretville and Arkville. In the 1770s, the settlers of that time paid "one hundred and forty- nine pounds sterling and 19 shillings " for the land to Indians . In June 1778, a joint force of English and Indians led by Joseph Brant raided the area on the East Branch of the Delaware River , including Margaretville. On August 26, 1778, the area was completely evacuated, the settlers were driven from the valley by the Indians. It was in this area that Tom Quick and Timothy Murphy became famous for their killing of Indians. In 1779 Livingston's sister was given parcel number 39. She married Morgan Lewis . The couple had a daughter named Margaret.

After the War of Independence , the settlers returned in 1784. Ignos DuMond, a nephew of Harmanus DuMond, was the first settler in what is now Margaretville in 1784. He sold his land later for 100 US dollars to John Tompkins, who then built the first sawmill. In 1820 the old stone schoolhouse in Dunraven was built. Orson M. Allaben opened a medical practice in 1831. Allaben was also the first postmaster when Margaretville was made a post office in June 1848 . At that time the post office was just a small extension to the shop of a GG Decker. In 1850 the place was named Margaretville in honor of Margaret Lewis (Livingston's granddaughter). Previously the place was known as Middletown Center. The place is one of the oldest settlements in Delaware County. On May 8, 1875, Margaretville was incorporated as a Village .

William H. Wells founded a newspaper, Margaretville Messenger , in 1884 . In 1904, Clarke A. Sanford acquired the newspaper and changed the name to Catskill Mountain News . Sanford's column as editor was called " Mountain Dew " and appeared until the 1960s. The Delaware and Eastern Railroad (later the Delaware and Northern Railroad ) was built in 1905. Rail traffic was discontinued in the 1940s. Sanford brought the first car, a Pope-Toledo, to Margaretville in 1907. In 1922 he built the Galli-Curci Theater on Main Street, which he named after the singer Amelita Galli-Curci . In 1925, Doctor Gordon Bostwick Mason moved to Margaretville and his home turned into a hospital. The Margaretville Hospital was founded in October 1930 and opened on January 13, 1931st Maurer managed it until his unexpected death in 1938.

In 1939 a central school was established, with which several smaller school houses in the area were combined. The hospital was expanded in 1944 and again in 1947. When New York City built the Pepacton Reservoir , the affected land was expropriated. The District 10 School should also have been canceled, but was spared due to legal problems. The dam was completed in 1954 and the towns of Arena, Union Grove, Shavertown and Pepacton were flooded over the next year. The project made itself felt with a decline in Margaretville's trade, on the other hand, the place received a sewage network . The new Margaretville Memorial Hospital replaced the older hospital in 1969.
