action

Lee Chandler works as a caretaker in an apartment complex in Quincy, near Boston . Though he does his job properly, tenants complain about him for his lack of friendliness. In the evening he goes to bars where he sometimes becomes aggressive towards other guests for no apparent reason.

Through a phone call, Lee learns of the death of his brother Joe, who has died of his known heart failure. After saying goodbye to him in hospital, Lee returns to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea to look after the estate of his brother and his son Patrick. Without telling him beforehand, Joe has appointed him as Patrick's guardian and has made all the necessary financial arrangements. He has two girlfriends at the same time, plays in a band and is involved in the school ice hockey team. That's why he doesn't want to move to his home in Boston, as Lee initially plans. On the other hand, Lee can't stand being in Manchester. George, a family friend, is particularly helpful there. He also helps Patrick keep the inherited boat in good condition, but it needs a new, expensive engine.

In a series of flashbacks , the film recounts Lee's traumatic past in Manchester a few years ago. He was happily married and had three children. After a party with his friends, he re-lit the fireplace and went to buy beer. When he returned, his house was on fire because he had forgotten to put up the grate. The fire department was able to save his wife Randi, but his three young children died on the upper floor. After being questioned by the police, he tried to kill himself while still at the police station.

Finally Lee and Patrick find a solution, according to which Lee works a little less in Boston, Patrick stays in Manchester, but can visit his uncle in Boston. George and his wife adopt Patrick and receive the money that Patrick's father has earmarked for his upbringing. Patrick can keep the boat. In the final scene you can see them both sitting peacefully on the boat fishing.

production

Production history and staff

The idea for the film came from Matt Damon and John Krasinski . After Damon was initially supposed to play the protagonist Lee Chandler himself, he left this role to the actor Casey Affleck due to scheduling conflicts . Damon said he had regretted having to give up the role, but was also pleased that Affleck took it on. Krasinski was also originally supposed to appear in the film. Kenneth Lonergan , who was supposed to be writing the script, also directed, and Damon ultimately only acted as one of the film's producers.

When asked how he, as a Broadway writer, intellectual and the son of a psychiatrist, came up with the idea of having his new film set in a provincial working class on the Atlantic coast of New England, Lonergan replied: "I'm an upper-middle-class child, Central Park West, Manhattan. My parents have a vacation home by the lake, a twelve-hour drive north of New York, on the Canadian border. I've been there every summer since I was eight. ”Lonergan explains that his life up there in the north had a huge impact on him as a boy. He was especially impressed by the people who were so independent that they build their houses and their boats themselves could repair it yourself.

Cast and dubbing

Casey Affleck plays Lee Chandler in the film, Michelle Williams plays his ex-wife Randi. Lucas Hedges , who played Lee's nephew Patrick in the film, had previously worked with Damon and in 2013 he played the role of his film son in The Zero Theorem . Kyle Chandler plays Lee's deceased brother Joe Chandler. Gretchen Mol can be seen in the role of Elise and Matthew Broderick in the role of Jeffrey.

The German dubbing was done by Interopa Film . Björn Schalla speaks Lee Chandler, Schaukje Könning lends her voice to his ex-wife Randi.

Filming and film music

Filming began on March 23, 2015 in the small US town of Manchester (in English also Manchester-by-the-Sea , which gave the film its name) and continued in the neighboring cities of Lynn and Beverly , also in the state of Massachusetts lie.

The score was composed by Lesley Barber . The soundtrack for the film comprises 16 songs, has a total length of 44:07 min and was released on November 18, 2016 by Milan Records . Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter considers Barber's work Oscar-worthy .

Premiere and recovery

The film premiered on January 23, 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival . Amazon then secured the US performance rights to the film. The company, which was one of the big buyers at the Sundance Film Festival, found a US cinema partner in Roadside Attractions to take over this part of the exploitation in the United States. Distribution in Germany was handled by Weltkino-Filmverleih, which presented the film to a German specialist audience for the first time at the Leipzig Film Art Fair in September 2016. In September 2016, the film was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival , from October 2, 2016 at the New York Film Festival , from October 8, 2016 at the London Film Festival and from October 21, 2016 at the Viennale . From November 18, 2016, it was shown in selected US cinemas, later it was launched there nationwide. The film was released in German cinemas on January 19, 2017. reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film is FSK  12. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is told very calmly and, apart from two very short, rather harmless bar beatings, contains no scenes of violence. Occasionally there are emotional, sad situations that are not overly played out; the melancholy mood is also loosened up again and again by humorous dialogues. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film was able to convince 96 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics , making it one of the best-rated films of 2016 there and was already considered a major Oscar contender by many critics shortly after its premiere . In addition to the film itself , Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter also brought up the director and screenwriter for it. Feinberg also saw opportunities for Jennifer Lame as Film Editor, Casey Affleck as Best Actor , Lucas Hedges as Best Supporting Actor, and Michelle Williams as Best Supporting Actress . By the British film magazine Sight & Sound was Manchester by the Sea in the top 10 best films of the year and from the Film Institute American in the top 10 list of AFI Movies of the Year added.

Justin Chang of Variety describes the film as "beautifully constructed, well-packed drama that shows how a family is forced through death to deal again with a past in the past tragedy." Chang praises Casey Affleck's performance in portraying a man who falls into deep silence after he has lost everything, and Gretchen Mol , who convincingly plays a mother who tries to get close to her son in a late scene in the film that she hardly knows. Chang highlights this scene in his review as "its words seem to distill the power and emotions of the remarkable film". Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter finds some scenes in the film - such as the reunion of Patrick and his mother and the meeting of the future stepfather - as stilted and unconvincing. However, McCarthy describes a scene late in the film when the great differences between Lee and Randi are portrayed as extremely emotional.

Lucas Hedges plays Patrick

Martin Schwickert from Tagesspiegel speaks of a pearl in US independent cinema and writes: “With a close eye for the working class environment , wonderfully precisely formulated dialogues and a stunning Casey Affleck, 'Manchester by the Sea' develops into a heartbreaking drama that gradually exposes the emotions behind the speechlessness of its hero. "

Kai Mihm from epd Film praises Casey Affleck's performance as a “bravura piece in resolute understatement. With a telling minimalism, he succeeds in giving a secret to an initially unsympathetic character - you can feel that Lee's dullness is an expression of deep sadness. ”He also writes about what he believes is a successful mixture of humor and tragedy in the film:“ This too is a clever trick, because the humor makes the tragic moments all the more shocking; conversely, the basic sadness makes laughter all the more liberating. ”This“ not easy balancing act ”works“ splendidly, thanks to Lonergan's remarkable feeling for unsophisticated naturalness. Nothing seems artificial or mannerist. "

From the German Film and Media Review was Manchester by the Sea with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “Kenneth Lonergan staged this family story in a consistently unspectacular manner with an absolutely appropriate narrative rhythm. [...] An exceptionally well-engineered script forms the basis for a film with an extraordinarily dense atmosphere. Outstanding here is the acting performance of Casey Affleck in the role of the withdrawn Lee Chandler. Lucas Hedges as Patrick, like all the other actors, embody their roles in an equally convincing way. "

In the USA, the film was only shown in selected cinemas from November 18, 2016; only later did the film hit cinemas nationwide in the United States. So far, the film has had 319,164 visitors in Germany. The film has worldwide revenues of $ 77.5 million.
