Manchester-by-the-Sea is a city on Cape Ann in the state of Massachusetts in the United States .
geography
The city is on the northern coast of Massachusetts Bay on Cape Ann . The city itself has seven smaller beaches and several smaller islands in close proximity to the mainland. The next larger metropolis is Boston , which is about 39 km southwest of Manchester-by-the-Sea.
history
The area was first settled by European immigrants in 1626 and was then known as Jeffrey's Creek . In 1645 the city was finally officially founded and renamed Manchester . Manchester was a fishing town for over 200 years until several wealthy residents of the nearby city of Boston finally had their summer homes built in Manchester in the 19th century . This resulted in buildings that are known to this day such as Villa Kragsyde or the Sunny Waters House .
In 1989, the city was officially renamed Manchester-by-the-Sea (Eng. Manchester-by-the-Sea ) to avoid confusion with the city of Manchester in the neighboring state of New Hampshire .
