Cabinet Bjarni Benediktsson (2017)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cabinet Bjarni Benediktsson was in the year 2017 from 11 January until the general election of October 28, the government of Iceland . She continued to run the business on a provisional basis until she was replaced by the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet on November 30, 2017 .

It was a coalition of the liberal-conservative Independence Party , which is opposed to Iceland joining the EU, and the EU-friendly liberal parties Viðreisn and Björt framtíð . After the early parliamentary elections on October 29, 2016 , none of the parties initially succeeded in forming a new government coalition. The government of Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson therefore continued to run the business until January 2017. The composition of the new cabinet was announced on January 10th. The coalition had a slim majority of one seat in the Althing.

On the morning of September 15, 2017, it became known that Björt framtíð had decided the previous evening to leave the government coalition, which led to the loss of the majority and the collapse of the government. The reason for Björt framtíð's resignation is a political scandal: The Independence Party is accused of covering up the "restoration of honor" of a convicted sex criminal, for which Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson's father campaigned. In initial reactions, representatives of the previous coalition partner Viðreisn and the opposition parties, Left-Green Movement and Alliance, spoke out in favor of a new election in October, while the leader of the Píratar faction , Birgitta Jónsdóttir , would have preferred to make a new attempt at forming a government. The new election took place on October 28, 2017, with the parliament not previously dissolved.
