history

Illustration of Agassiz Rock from 1870

In October 1874, the rock was named by a group of students at the Essex Institute after Louis Agassiz , who had worked as a professor of natural history at Harvard University and who had died in 1873. He was the first to develop the theory, which was later recognized to be correct, that the stones spread across the state had been formed by glaciers and left behind, and he had also visited the rock known today as Agassiz Rock. Up to this point, science was convinced that the stones were remains of the Flood .

In 1957, the first land came into the possession of the trustees, one year later and in the 1960s, further properties followed to expand the protected area. In 2001 the organization was given the last part so far.

It is not known how deep the rock protrudes into the earth. In addition, there are other, but significantly smaller, rocks scattered in the protected area. The trail through the grounds is approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) long and passes both large rocks.
