The 600 acres (2.4 km² large) Ravenswood Park is located in Gloucester in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed as a nature reserve by The Trustees of Reservations organization.
history
Today's park contains a multitude of relics from Cape Ann's past , ranging from hunting paraphernalia of the Indians to stone walls of the early European settlers to part of the Old Salem Road , which now forms part of the network of trails in the park. The merchant Samuel E. Sawyer spent the summer months here in the 19th century and achieved through his will that the area was placed under protection as Ravenswood Park in 1889 . He named it after the castle of the same name from Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor .
The management of the reserve was the responsibility of the Trustees of Ravenswood Park for more than 100 years , but in 1993 they passed the area on to the Trustees of Reservations. In 1998, the property belonging to the protected area was extended due to a donation. The Trustees Archives in Sharon have an extensive collection of the park's history.
Protected area
The park is designed as a recreational area and has 10 mi (16.1 km ) of hiking trails. It is accessible all year round and can be used differently depending on the season; while the trees provide shade in summer and are ideal for bird watching , some trails can be used for skiing in winter .
