Hamlin Reservation is a 135 acres (54.6 hectare ) nature reserve near the city of Ipswich in the state of Massachusetts in the United States , administered by The Trustees of Reservations .
Protected area
The area originally used for agriculture now consists essentially of a large salt marsh . There is an approximately 1 mi (1.6 km ) loop trail over a historic levee around Eagle Island . The dike connected the island to the mainland at the time it was built so that cattle could graze on the island. Today, Eagle Island is covered with a Weymouth pine , oak and hickory forest.
To the rear of the island is extensive marshland drained by Labor-in-Vain Creek and one of the last remaining pristine stretches of the 25,000 acres (101.2 km²) Great Marsh . Among other things, brown ibis and silver herons can be observed here.
The property was bequeathed to the trustees from Octavia Hamlin in 1993 and named after her in memory of the founder.
