Stavros Reservation is a 74  acres (29.9  hectare ) nature reserve near the city of Essex in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

Protected area

At around 50 acres (20.2 hectares), most of the reserve consists of salt marshes , but it is widely known for its Whites Hill . This is a drumlin from which there is an excellent view of the surroundings - especially Castle Hill , Crane Beach , Crane Wildlife Refuge and Halibut Point . An approximately 0.75  mi (1.2  km ) long circular path leads up the hill to an extensive open space that contains the remains of the stone foundation walls of a former 50  ft (15.2  m ) high tower that was built in was built in the 1880s by Lamont G. Burnham. The three-story tower was believed to have been used as a pumping station for Burnham's farm, but there is also evidence that he had a guard stationed there to look for Burnham's ships hauling coal to Newburyport . As soon as they circled Halibut Point , the guard informed Burnham, who then rode a fast horse into town to set the selling price for his cargo.
