Halibut Point Reservation is a 12 acres (4.9 hectare ) nature reserve near the city of Rockport in the state of Massachusetts in the United States , which is managed by The Trustees of Reservations in cooperation with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
Protected area
Granite was quarried on a large scale at Halibut Point in the 20th century and was used to build structures in the surrounding towns. The Boston Custom House Tower is made from the material obtained there. In 1934 the trustees were able to acquire the site and set it up as a protected area.
Good bird watching is particularly possible from the reserve . It is in the immediate vicinity of the DCR-administered Halibut Point State Park , where there is also a visitor center with an attached museum on the history of granite mining at Cape Ann . 2.5 mi (4 km ) of hiking trails that are part of the Atlantic Path run through the area .
