Ward Reservation is the name of a 704  acres (2.8  km² ) nature reserve in the urban areas of Andover and North Andover in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

Protected area

In the center of the reserve is the highest point in Essex County at 420  ft (128  m ) Holt Hill . The hill is named after Nicholas Holt, who settled there in the mid-17th century. The Holt Farm , which still exists today, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places . On June 17, 1775, at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War , residents of the area climbed the hill to watch the burning Charlestown from there .

In 1940, Mabel Ward transferred the first 153 acres (0.6 km²) of her property to the trustees who named the reserve after her. As a result, the family gradually gave the organization more plots of land, so that today it covers almost 3 km². The approximately 10  mi (16.1  km ) hiking trails in the reserve, some of which are part of the Bay Circuit Trail , connect the three hills of Shrub , Boston and Holt . At the top of Holt Hill called "Solstice Stones" are ( German  stones of the solstice ) that a compass equal to the cardinal points of the winter and summer solstice and equinoctial represent in spring and autumn. There is also a rare rocking bog in the protected area , where orchids and carnivorous plants thrive.
