Kara Hayward (born November 17, 1998 in Andover , Massachusetts ) is an American actress . She is best known for her role in the film Moonrise Kingdom (2012).

life and career

Kara Hayward was born in November 1998 in Andover , a city in the US state of Massachusetts , and grew up there. She attends a public school outside of Boston and got her first acting experience in theater during summer school . She has been a member of the Mensa , an association for people with a high intelligence quotient, since she was nine .

At the age of twelve she got her first role in Wes Anderson's comedy Moonrise Kingdom , which opened in May 2012 at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival . She plays there alongside Bruce Willis , Edward Norton , Bill Murray and Jared Gilman the lead role of Suzy Bishop , who falls in love with Sam Shakusky (played by Gilman) and runs off into the wilderness with him, whereupon the community takes up the chase. For this role she won the Young Artist Awards 2013 in the category Best Actor in a Feature Film , the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 as Best Young Actor , and the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award in the Best category Youth Performance in a Lead or Supporting Role - Female nominated. At the MTV Movie Awards 2013 she and Gilman received a nomination in the category Best Film Kiss for their mutual kiss .

Following the success of Moonrise Kingdom , Hayward took on guest roles in the crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and White Collar (both 2013).
