action
The unconventional and outwardly gruff but basically good-hearted Irish policeman Gerry Boyle works in the Connemara region for the Irish police Garda and gets through everyday life. Aidan McBride, a young police officer from Dublin who is on his first day at work in Connemara and is overwhelmed by the vulgar and unconventional Boyle, is at his side in solving a murder . The dead person is a member of an international drug smuggling gang. As a result, Boyle has to work against his will with FBI agent Wendell Everett, who has previously traveled from the United States to expose the gang. The residents of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht let the African-American run into alleged language problems over and over again during his investigation. Due to various racist remarks, Boyle does not have an easy position with the FBI agent, whom he repeatedly pokes at. Its search comes up against a wall of silence among the Irish. Over a couple of glasses of beer, the two not only come closer to each other, but also find a new lead to the gang.
Meanwhile, on his way home, McBride happened to stop the car of the three drug smugglers - who like Schopenhauer, Bertrand Russell and others. a. quote and z. B. think about the difference between socio and psychopath - and is shot by gang member Liam O'Leary. His wife turns to Boyle for help. It turns out the gangsters bribed all of the West Coast police to look the other way on a deal that police said was about half a billion dollars worth of drugs. They try to put Boyle under pressure with his prostitute visits and also to bribe him, but Boyle refuses the money. Boyle now knows that apart from himself and Everett, all colleagues and superiors are in cahoots with the smugglers. At first, he does not pass on his knowledge to Everett.
We see Boyle accompanying his mother to the clinic. His mother, who is seriously ill with cancer, spends one last evening with her son in a pub with live music and then commits suicide .
Everett is lured on the wrong track by the bribed colleague Boyles; so he suspects that the big deal in Cork should go through and leaves in his car. While the gangsters want to complete the drug smuggling, they send O'Leary to Boyle's house to kill him and thus eliminate the last security risk. O'Leary can outsmart Boyle, sneak into the house and threaten him with his gun. A conversation ensues in which he confesses to the course of the murders and reveals the real location of the drug delivery. Finally, Boyle takes O'Leary by surprise with a Deringer pistol hidden in his underpants and mortally wounds him. He had previously diverted the weapon from a weapon found by the little alien fan from the marshland, presumably the IRA , who wants the weapons back.
Boyle notifies Everett, who at first doesn't believe him. Boyle drives in parade uniform and heavily armed to the place of delivery, where a little later Everett turns up. He has previously requested reinforcements, but this does not materialize, as Boyle had already predicted. A shootout ensues in which Boyle and Everett are both shot, but still manage to finish off all the gangsters. The ship catches fire while Boyle is on board and eventually explodes. A few days later, Everett stands on the pier and looks out to sea, where he is approached by a little boy and a photographer. Neither of them believe that Boyle is dead because he was a former Irish Olympic swimmer in Seoul, South Korea, and no body was found. Everett continues to think Boyle's Olympics story - Boyle had told him - is a fairy tale and thinks Boyle is dead. When he looks out to sea, however, he smiles.

“The wink and the slightly parodic attitude towards his own story is unmistakable, because McDonagh makes absolutely no secret of how much he likes to sledge with the set pieces of the genre, without taking the wind out of the sails of the plot - which is always there in all silliness to take. Like his brother before him, he also shows a sense of timing and a healthy amount of comedy that loosens up the story without taking away from it the heaviness. The highlights are definitely the war of words between Gleeson and Cheadle. "
“It's not the plot or the genre that The Guard impresses with. The film shines with its almost perfect dialogues and the wonderfully eccentric and ambivalent characters. The Guard sings the Song of Songs on underestimated qualities: restraint, bad mood, stubbornness and joy (even in unreasonable pleasure) - in Ireland apparently virtues. The beautiful country to look at plays a minor role. It is more about the nature of the province and this province produces pleasantly peculiar people. "
“In 'The Guard', the London-born filmmaker McDonagh paints a deeply gloomy picture of Ireland: Almost everyone here is a drunk, sodomist, terrorist or gun freak. Or, like Boyle, a racist. […] At the same time, as a buddy movie, the film is in the tradition of cop films like 'Lethal Weapon'. But where Hollywood would seek the final alliance between the protagonists, the characters in 'The Guard' stay at a distance. And so a reserved handshake in parting is the maximum closeness that Boyle and Wendell can finally bring themselves to. "
