Gary Rydstrom
Gary R. Rydstrom (* 1959 in Chicago , Illinois , United States ) is an American sound engineer and animation director.
Life
Rydstrom attended the USC School of Cinema. Although he originally wanted to become a screenwriter or director, he soon developed a fascination for the post-production phase of films. He started his career at Skywalker Sound in 1983 after his university professor offered him the job. There he learned under Ben Burtt .
He was involved in various successful films in the following years; like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Spaceballs (1987). In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was one of the most important US sound engineers; he was responsible for the sound of over fifty productions. At the Academy Awards in 1992 he was nominated four times; for Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day and Backdraft - Men who walk through the fire in the categories “ best sound ” and “ best sound editing ”, where he finally won two of the trophies for Terminator 2 - reckoning day . He received two more Oscars in 1994 for the sound at Jurassic Park .
Rydstrom won his fifth Academy Award in 1998 for Titanic and two more the following year for Saving Private Ryan . He was nominated four more times as a sound engineer - 2000 for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace , 2002 for Die Monster AG , 2003 for Minority Report and 2004 for Finding Nemo - but never won another Oscar.
After a career of more than twenty years as a sound engineer, he decided to focus on something else as a filmmaker. With the animation studio Pixar , with whom he had worked several times as a sound engineer since its first film Die kleine Lampe in 1986, he realized the five-minute computer animation film Lifted about the Alien Stu . This film was nominated for “ best animated short film ” at the 2007 Academy Awards and was shown in 2007 as a supporting film for Pixars Ratatouille .
After Lifted , Rydstrom had the opportunity to make a movie for Pixar. In 2015 the film Strange Magic was made .
