Attack the Block is a British science fiction - action comedy and the directorial debut of Joe Cornish . Actors include Nick Frost and Jodie Whittaker . The film was shown for the first time in Germany on August 24, 2011 as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .

action

The film is set in a run-down council estate in Brixton, South London , known as the Ends . Youth gangs terrorize the residents and the neighborhood and the police rarely stop by. It's Guy Fawkes Night and there's a lot of fireworks going on. The main characters are the young people Moses and his gang, consisting of Pest, Dennis, Jerome and Biggz. They all live in the same block and only fear the gang leader Hi-Hatz, who wants to train Moses as a drug dealer. While Moses' gang assaults the nurse Sam, a fiery object falls from the sky and crashes through the roof of a parked car next to them. As they take a closer look, they discover a creature that was part of the meteor and kill them.

A short time later, more aliens appear and the gang has to defend itself against them. They retreat to the block that is being attacked by the aliens. The huge aliens look like a mixture of wolves and gorillas without eyes, with pitch-black, thick fur and brightly shining predator teeth full of fangs . Pest is bitten in the leg by an alien while fleeing, whereupon they happen to meet the nurse again, who reluctantly tends to the injured while the gang holed up in their apartment.

Dennis and Jerome are killed during an alien attack on the apartment and the subsequent escape. The survivors can escape to the "Grasbude" on the 19th floor, a hemp plantation that is secured with strong doors. The plantation operator Ron has set up a number of lamps here that emit UV light . By chance they discover the scent traces on Moses' clothes because they glow under UV light. So it turns out that the alien killed was a female and the other aliens are males, attracted by the female's scent. Since Moses and others came into contact with the pheromone during the attack on the female , the males pursue them. They then develop a plan to lure the aliens away from the group and wipe them out.

Sam, who has no adherence to the pheromone, first leaves the refuge and passes the aliens unhindered in Moses' apartment, where she opens all the gas taps. Moses, feeling responsible for the whole mess, is ready to sacrifice himself for his friends and the block. He asks Sam for forgiveness and, after Sam has given him a sign, runs into his apartment with the dead female strapped to his back, pursued by the aliens, and throws the corpse on the floor. With fireworks rockets he ignites the escaping gas and kills the aliens. He saves himself with a jump from the balcony.

The police arrested Moses and others because of the attack on Sam, among other things. While Moses is being led away, residents of the block chant his name.

Sony Pictures Screen Gems is responsible for distribution in the United States . However, a release date was initially not announced. It was feared that American viewers would not understand the heavy South London accent and that subtitles might be necessary. Cornish also admitted that during a question and answer session. When he asked the question, “Can I ask you something? American distributors are nervous about the language, the jargon : Did you understand? ”Those present“ shouted yes ”.

The film was released in the United Kingdom on May 13, 2011. It opened in German cinemas on September 22, 2011. In the US, he celebrated at the festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin , Texas 12 March 2011 Premiere and ran from 29 July 2011 in some cinemas. The film grossed approximately $ 5.8 million worldwide on a production budget of $ 13 million, most of which was $ 4.0 million in the UK .

Reviews

The first reviews were very positive. Following the SXSW showing, The Examiner's Scott Wampler rated the film an A +, writing that it was the best film at the festival and linking it to other directorial debuts such as Neill Blomkamps District 9 and Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs . Matt Patches of CinemaBlend.com said, " Attack the Block , even on its small scale, could become one of the best action films of the year." IGN awarded four stars and praised Cornish's directorial skills. The film has 90 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes .

In its September 2011 issue, the film-dienst criticized the film's lack of humor, "the balance between comedy and action has clearly shifted towards the latter". However, it works "not so badly" "once you get used to the seriousness and the interspersed (not always successful because they seem cramped) comedic interludes". The extraterrestrials "are an effective and cleverly introduced fear-maker who leave painful wounds in the initially rather unsympathetic protagonists." The final conclusion was: "While Hollywood continues to rest on tiring quotation films in the genre film, new ideas continue to come from Europe and Overseas. ”Critic.de, on the other hand, praised the film for its“ skillful, finely balanced mix of cool sayings, fast action, weird humor and its subtle ambiguity ”. These ingredients are essential for the success of Attack the Block.
