Neill Blomkamp (born September 17, 1979 in Johannesburg ) is a South African director , screenwriter and producer of TV spots , short films and feature films .

He became famous for the science fiction film District 9 .

Life

Blomkamp began working in South Africa at the age of 17 as a professional animator for Deadtime under Simon Hansen and Sharlto Copley , the latter later starring in all three Blomkamp cinema productions. In 1997 his family moved to Vancouver , Canada , where he enrolled in the Vancouver Film School . In 2003 he was commissioned to illustrate photorealistic aircraft from the future for the popular sciences of the “Next Century in Aviation”. In 2004 he was commissioned to illustrate “The Future of the Automobile”. Blomkamp then worked as a visual effects artist at The Embassy Visual Effects in Vancouver and Rainmaker Digital Effects .

Blomkamp's breakthrough came in 2007 as the director of the Landfall trilogy of live-action short films set in the Halo universe to promote the release of Halo 3 . Halo: Combat , the second film in the Landfall trilogy, won the 2008 Cannes Lions - Film Lions Grand Prix .

As a result, Blomkamp was offered the direction of his first feature film, an adaptation of the video game Halo . Its funding, however, failed due to disagreements between Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox . Peter Jackson , the producer on the project, offered Blomkamp instead to produce District 9 , an adaptation of Spy Films' 2005 short film Alive in Joburg , directed by Neill Blomkamp, ​​Sharlto Copley, Simon Hansen and Shanon Worley. In District 9 Blomkamp directed and Copley starred; it was released in mid-August 2009 and received high critical acclaim. For his documentary style, Blomkamp mostly uses the hand-held camera perspective, the cinéma vérité technique and a mixture of near-natural and photo - realistic computer-generated effects.

Blomkamp's second feature film is called Elysium and also deals with a dark science fiction setting. Filming began in July 2011. The film was released on August 9, 2013. In March 2015, the third feature film, Chappie, followed . In all of his previous films, he worked with the cameraman Trent Opaloch .

On 14 June 2017, the American-Canadian published Oats Studios by Neill Blomkamp the military science fiction -Kurzfilm Rakka free on YouTube and Steam . It is the first short film from a first series, called Volume 1 , of the Oats Studios ' experimental short film series, which are not related in terms of content . From the second series of short films onwards, these are to be published for a fee.

Blomkamp lives in Vancouver and is married to the Canadian screenwriter Terri Tatchell , who wrote the screenplays for Yellow and District 9 with him .
