Sharlto Copley
Sharlto Copley (born November 27, 1973 in Pretoria , South Africa ) is a South African actor , film producer and director . He was best known in the role of Wikus van de Merwe in the film District 9 .
Life
In 2005 Copley produced the short film Alive in Joburg and took on a supporting role in it. It was his first film in which he acted under the direction of Neill Blomkamp . In 2009, Blomkamp cast him as the leading actor in the science fiction drama District 9 , which builds on Alive in Joburg . The film was artistically and commercially successful and made Copley and Blomkamp internationally known.
In 2010, Copley played alongside Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper in The A-Team - The Movie , the theatrical adaptation of the series The A-Team , the captain "Howling Mad" Murdock . In 2012 he was in front of the camera for a remake of Oldboy and the Spanish-American horror film Open Grave .
In 2013, Copley worked again for the film Elysium, directed by Neill Blomkamp . In Blomkamp's Chappie in 2015, he played the title role in the motion capture process and lent his voice to the title character in the original English version.
Private
He has been in a relationship with model Tanit Phoenix since 2012 . The couple became engaged in July 2015 and married on February 15, 2016. They have a daughter together.
