occupation

Open Grave is a zombie movie by Gonzalo López-Gallego from the year 2013 .

action

A bearded man has woken up in a reinforced concrete pit full of corpses and cannot remember how he got there. In a panic, he screams for help until a young Asian woman throws a rope into the pit so that he can climb up.

The man finally finds his way through a forest to a house and discovers five more people: the mute Asian woman who doesn't understand English, a German man and three Americans. Nobody can remember their own identity, although they soon realize that they can remember other aspects of their previous lives (such as knowledge of foreign languages).

After long discussions they find five identity cards: the bearded one is John, the German Lukas and the other three are Sharon, Nathan and Michael. There are no documents for the dumb woman. Luke is hostile to John, which is compounded when the group discovers a picture that shows all of them except John. A calendar found indicates that something unnamed will happen in two days.

The next morning the group explores the area. John and Sharon stumble upon a locked shelter. Inside is a child who calls John "Jonah" and is scared of him. The child refuses to answer questions. Michael now hears screams in the background and follows them until he discovers a man who has become entangled in a barbed wire fence. The man is covered with cuts and bruises. He asks Michael for help, but when Michael tries to free him, Michael is mortally wounded.

John suffers from numerous flashbacks with scenes of violence against people. He and Sharon run into a group of sick-looking people who want to chop wood and attack the couple. The two can flee. The sick pursue them, but give up when they see corpses hanging from a tree.

Lukas, who is feverish, stumbles upon a video camera showing clips of John, where he is conducting medical experiments on him and others. In the clips, John explains that a vaccine can prevent an infection from spreading, but has the side effect of causing temporary memory loss.

John eventually has flashbacks that reveal his identity as Dr. Jonah Cooke confirm and that he was trying to cure a disease with the help of the group that turns out to be his medical team. Jonah tries to cure the sick Lukas with a found vaccine syringe, but he defends himself and dies. Nathan and Sharon have now both fully recovered their memories as well. Suddenly the house is surrounded by a large group of infected people. Desperate, Sharon writes a letter to Jonah telling him what happened. She reveals that the mute Asian is key to survival because she is immune to a virus that wiped out most of the world's population. Jonah was the leader of the medical team that tried to prevent further spread and cure infected people. Jonah got infected a few weeks before the events. He'd immunized everyone on the team with the vaccine just before waking up in the pit at the beginning of the movie.

When the two days are over, soldiers from the commando arrive and shoot all the zombies in the forest and Nathan, Jonah's brother. Jonah and his wife Sharon try to escape, but Sharon is badly injured by an infected person. Jonah hides in the mortuary pit with Sharon and injects himself with vaccine to appear dead. When he wakes up, his wife is dead. The dumb woman survived and frees him from the pit. In the final scene, he and the Asian woman stand in front of a gigantic hollow with discarded corpses.

Filming

The film was shot in Hungary in 2012.

reception

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says few horror films get off to the promising start of Open Grave . However, the script does not manage to meet the expectations. It does not provide for meaningful development of the characters and reveals the secrets of the plot in a clumsy, boring way.
