Europa Report is an American science fiction film directed by Sebastián Cordero from 2013. The thriller, shot in found footage format, is about a manned expedition to Jupiter's moon Europa . In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on August 22, 2013 as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .
action
First, excerpts from fictional news programs and interviews with various scientists provide information about the Europa One mission , the first manned expedition to Europe , the fourth largest moon on the planet Jupiter . Europa One is supposed to search for traces of life suspected in the ocean under the moon's ice crust. The mission is being carried out by a private space company ; The international crew includes Captain William Xu, pilot Rosa Dasque, Chief Scientific Officer Daniel Luxembourg, marine biologist Katya Petrovna, engineer James Corrigan and chief engineer Andrei Blok.
The further course of the expedition is largely shown from the perspective of permanently installed cameras on board the spaceship or helmet cameras. Already relatively early in the course of the mission, a solar storm damages the ship's communication unit, which breaks radio contact with the earth. During the subsequent outboard operation, the repair fails and engineer Corrigan is killed. The crew decides to continue the journey and arrives safely at Europe.
Shortly after landing, Blok notices a strange light outside the ship. A probe that is sent into the ocean through a hole in the ice is hit by a brightly shining object and loses contact with the crew. Petrovna steps on the surface of Europe to analyze soil samples and discovers simple life forms in an ice sample. Suddenly a light appears below her, she breaks into the ice and disappears. The rest of the crew then decided to start their journey home. However, when starting, there are problems with the engines. The ship crash-lands at a point where the ice is far less stable and Captain Xu is fatally injured. The ship is badly damaged and the survivors are in danger of freezing to death. Blok and Luxembourg want to carry out repairs outside the ship. When Luxembourg enters Europe, lights also appear below him and he too breaks through the ice. In view of the hopeless situation, Blok manages to repair the communication unit by using parts of the life support system. He notices that the entire ship is now surrounded by the lights and begins to break in with him. Dasque can restore communication with Earth and will transmit all mission records. With her inevitable death in mind, she would like to take one last look at the life forms. As the ship sinks into the water, Dasque opens the airlock, after which the water flows into the interior. The last picture of the camera inside the ship shows an octopus-like being with bioluminescent body parts.
Despite the loss of the crew, the mission on Earth is considered successful due to the groundbreaking discovery.
background
The film budget was less than $ 10 million. To make the spaceship and the landscape of Europe as realistic as possible, production designer Eugenio Caballero consulted scientists from NASA , the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and SpaceX .
The film is based on the scientific hypothesis that there is a deep ocean beneath the ice crust of Europe and that life could have developed in it, completely independent of the earth . The clips from news programs recorded in the film also include a short passage with the astrophysicist and television presenter Neil deGrasse Tyson , in which he expresses his wish to go “ ice fishing ” in Europe .
