Eugenio Caballero

Eugenio Caballero (* 1970 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican production designer . He won an Oscar in 2007 for his work in Pan's Labyrinth .

Life

Caballero studied art and cinema history at the University of Florence from 1989 to 1991 . He then returned to Mexico and worked at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura and the Universidad Iberoamericana . After initially working as a production designer and art director for music videos and commercials, he worked as an assistant decorator on the film William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet by director Baz Luhrmann in 1996 .

Several Mexican productions followed, including Santitos from 1999, for which Caballero won awards at the Cartagena Film Festival and the Gramado Film Festival . For both Santitos and Seres humanos from 2001, he was nominated for a Silver Ariel at the Ariel Awards , the most important Mexican film award. He was even able to win this in 2004 for the film Zurdo .

In 2006 Caballero was responsible for the production design in the film Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro . For his work Caballero won an Oscar in the category Best Production Design at the 2007 Academy Awards . He received other honors for this film at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards , the Ariel Awards, and the Art Director Guild Awards Ceremony . There were also nominations for the BAFTA Awards , the Goya and the Satellite Awards .

Since his success at the Oscar awards, Caballero has been increasingly used in international films, including Resident Evil: Extinction and The Runaways .
