Isiah Whitlock Jr. (born September 13, 1954 in South Bend , Indiana ) is an American actor . He gained fame primarily through the role of Senator Clay Davis from the series The Wire .

life and career

Isiah Whitlock Jr. was born and raised in the city of South Bend. After graduating from high school, he received a football scholarship to Southwest Minnesota State University . However, he was denied a career as a football player due to injuries. He graduated from college in 1976 and then went to San Francisco , where he joined the American Conservatory Theater. A year earlier he had already participated in a three-month drama program in the same city. After his time in California, he moved to the east coast of New York City and began appearing there on the theater stage.
