The Southwest Minnesota State University , which is called by the locals "SMSU", is a state university in the southwest of the US state Minnesota in the city of Marshall (Minnesota) and belongs to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System . In 2014, 8,285 students were enrolled at the university. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the SMSU. The colors of the university are brown and gold.

history

In 1963, the Marshall site was chosen for Southwest Minnesota State College . Teaching began in the fall of 1967. The first 509 students graduated in 1971. The college was renamed Southwest State University in 1975 and Southwest Minnesota State University in 2003.

The student newspaper was first published May 10, 1968 under the name The Impact . The name was renamed The Reader in 1974 . The name of the newspaper was renamed back to The Impact in 1980 and then to The Spur in 2003.

On January 2, 2002, a fire destroyed the student center during the winter break. The new student center was completed in 2005.

Teaching and studying

The SMSU offers more than 50 bachelor's degree programs and four master’s degree programs. The university's administration is divided into two colleges: the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences, and the College of Business, Education, and Professional Studies. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits SMSU.

Sports

The university has teams in six men's sports and eight women's sports. The names of the teams are called Mustangs . The university is one of sixteen universities in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The colors of the university are brown and gold, which are the colors of the prairie that is in southwestern Minnesota.
