action

The small town of Durham in North Carolina is facing existential difficulties. More and more small shops are closing and more and more people are leaving the city to move to large shopping centers. Old Georgiana Carr is also thinking of selling the house she has lived in all her life, as she can no longer afford to maintain the huge building. The situation changes when her unknown Gus Leroy rents an old warehouse that is Georgiana's possession. Only after some time does it become clear that the building is being used as an interim storage facility for hazardous waste . The residents of the town are concerned and Georgiana, supported by her niece Willa, does not want to agree to an extension of the lease. However, Gus Leroy is able to convince them to rent him the warehouse for another month. Until then, he wants to convince the city administration of the benefits of his company, as they are planning to expand the location in Durham, which has given other dying cities a boost. Georgiana agrees to extend the rental agreement for one month. Gus plans to speak to the city administration the next day and thus be able to conclude a contract between the city and his company for five years.

The young Mary Saunders works for lawyer Howard Mercer with whom she has a secret affair. She loves her sandpit friend, policeman Harris Parker, but hides her affair from him. When she learns that Howard is married and has two children, she confronts him. The next day she is released and now plans to move to a big city and leave the small town of Durham with all the memories behind. Harris, who takes care of his sick mother in Durham, calls her a coward because he could never leave town. Nevertheless, he drives her to the airport the next day.

It is raining heavily that day. While Gus talks to the city council and can convince the administration of the benefits of garbage storage for the city, Harris, who is taking Mary to the airport in his patrol car, is called to a mission. Several vans, which were supposed to bring containers with hazardous waste to the warehouse in Durham, got off the track on the rain-soaked road and fell down an embankment. Gus, who is called to the scene of the accident, is horrified. However, it turns out that none of the containers were damaged. A disaster was averted from the city, but Gus's plans seem to have been shattered with the accident. He now doubts his job, fears he will be fired, and in the end decides to quit. Mary, who missed her plane due to the mission, stays in Durham and reunites with Harris. Georgiana has sold her house and is satisfied with the new owner.

production

Main Street was filmed on location in Durham from April to May 2009 . The screenplay was written by Horton Foote, who won an Oscar in 1963 for the screenplay for the film Who disturbs the nightingale . Foote passed away in 2009, with Main Street as his last completed script.

Main Street was shown on the Marketplace in Cannes in May 2010 at the same time as the film festival, but was then only shown at small festivals, including the Austin Film Festival, in October 2010 at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis and the Film Festival in Sedona, Arizona November 2010.

Only in the course of Colin Firth's Oscar nomination and later award for The King's Speech also Main Street received renewed attention and was released on November 17, 2011 in Germany on DVD and Blu-Ray.

criticism

“Well-known Hollywood stars populate an artfully interwoven relationship and family drama against the background of an economic crisis that manifests itself particularly dramatically in the small towns beyond the urban centers on the coasts. The script was based on the last work by Pulitzer Prize winner and Hollywood veteran Horton Foote ('Who disturbs the nightingale'), who died in 2009, which is probably one of the reasons why people like Colin Firth, Ellen Burstyn and Orlando Bloom didn’t let themselves be asked to participate.
