Alive in Joburg is a science fiction - short film under the direction of Neill Blomkamp , produced by Simon Hansen and Sharlto Copley and 2005 Spy Films released. The film deals with racial discrimination and has a documentary style.
action
In 1990 Johannesburg is home to a large number of extraterrestrial refugees , whose huge spaceships, estimated to be one kilometer long, hover over the city. When the space visitors came to Earth, the human population welcomed the aliens in a very hospitable manner to take advantage of their advanced technologies. A short time later, the aliens began to invade other parts of Johannesburg, where, in order to survive, they committed crimes and came into conflict with the police.
The film begins like a normal documentary and shows interviews and recordings from the hand-held camera perspective . At the end it is explained that there is great tension between the human and extraterrestrial inhabitants, especially because the aliens are stealing electricity and other resources from the city.
The aliens were a kind of slaves in their homeland and fled to Earth after their living conditions became unbearable.
Because racial discrimination was still normal in South Africa in 1990 , the aliens had to submit to the black population, which in turn submitted to the white population. Ultimately, because of this, they came into conflict with the black and white populations of Johannesburg.
All interviewees in the film were asked for their opinion on the wave of refugees from Zimbabwe , but this part was cut out in the film, so one gets the impression that the people are talking about the aliens.
The aliens
The alien race in Alive in Joburg was never mentioned by name, speaks an indefinable language and is known either as "They" or "The Aliens". One resident called them "The Poleepkwa". In their biological suits, the aliens resembled bipedal, human-like robots. Outside of their suits, they do not look human, have neither hair nor ears and have protruding feeding tentacles where a human's mouth would be.
The area on the aliens' face where everyone would suspect eyes has been pixelated.
A scene at the beginning of the film shows a TV recording of an alien in his mech suit, who fends off an attack by two police officers by throwing cars. This scene illustrates, among other things, the technical superiority.
Trivia
- This film is said to have been one of the reasons why Blomkamp was selected to direct the feature film Halo . However, this has not yet been produced because the financing failed.
