Halo 3 is the third installment after Halo: Battle for the Future and Halo 2, and thus another installment in the Halo game series. The game was released on September 26, 2007 in Europe , Asia and the USA , but one day earlier in New Zealand . Just like its predecessor, it is a pure first-person shooter . Sales of $ 170 million were achieved within 24 hours, surpassing its predecessor Halo 2 . An illegal DVD image of the finished version was found on the Internet on September 20, 2007. The game was sold in some countries (Norway, Italy) a week before the official release date, which can have civil consequences for sellers.

The uncut version of Halo 3 for Xbox One , which was released in November 2014 as part of the Masterchief Collection , was approved by the USK for ages 16 and up.

Plot and course of the game

The Alliance has arrived on Earth and is looking for a sacred object in the ruins of New Mombasa.

The Master Chief is on board the Blood Fathers Ship, which is on its way to Earth from High Charity with the Prophet of Truth, to land there. During the entry into the earth's atmosphere, the Master Chief jumps from the ship and is found a little later by a rescue team led by Sgt. Johnson. Since the life support system of his Mark VI armor was intact, the inner gel layer stiffened as intended to prevent injuries. After the Master Chief has come to, he sees the master, who is also a member of the rescue mission, runs towards him and holds his pistol under his head.

Sgt. Johnson informs the Master Chief that the Lord and the Elites are now on the side of the people. The Master Chief reluctantly lets go of the master.

This is where the game begins. The Master Chief is to be escorted back to base. There are numerous battles with Brutes and Grunts on the way to the first extraction point. After the pelicans are ambushed by Phantoms at the extraction point, the extraction fails and Sgt. Johnson and a few soldiers are captured by the Brutes. It is now up to the Master Chief and the Lord to rescue Sgt. Johnson and return to base.

Arrived at the base, a reunion with Commander Keyes (the daughter of Captain Keyes from the first part and captain of "In Amber Clad") is celebrated. Lord Hood also reports to the base via video conference. He gives instructions to the Master Chief regarding the object that the Alliance found in the ruins of New Mombasa. Lord Hood wants the property to be bombed. But first the air defense must be switched off. The conference is interrupted when suddenly the Prophet of Truth delivers a video message. In this he describes humanity as vermin and prophesies that humans cannot escape the glazing of their planet. He also says that the destruction of humanity is divine will. It is now clear that the base has been discovered.

The base is under attack and the Master Chief defends it until everyone is evacuated. The Brutes have defused the bomb that was supposed to blow up the station. So Spartan-117 has to go back to arm the bomb again. After the Master Chief kills the rest of the Brutes, he reactivates the bomb. Then the Master Chief gets to safety before the base explodes.

Now the chief has to go to Voi. To do this, he drives a Warthog, which is in the basement of the destroyed base, outside and makes his way through the Alliance troops. In Voi he destroys the air defense positions and Lord Hood immediately starts the bombing. But the alliance activates the object. A portal is opened to the "Ark" through which the Alliance cruisers fly. Shortly afterwards a ship crashes near Voi. It quickly becomes clear that the Flood has landed. The chief is given the task of securing the ship, as the signals from him suggest Cortana, who was left behind on High Charity in Halo 2. The chief fights his way to the ship with the master and finds a message from Cortana. When the chief has recovered them, he is taken to an alliance ship that is run by the elites who help the people. The message is corrupted but can be recovered using 343 Guilty Spark. It shows that Cortana is doing badly and that she absolutely needs to be saved. Meanwhile, the elites are beginning to glaze Africa to prevent the Flood from spreading. The Master Chief and the Lord then fly through the portal with the fleet of the elites and the UNSC ship Forward Unto Dawn and arrive at the ark.

The ark is far outside of our galaxy. It is a kind of "halo factory" that replaces destroyed installations. That's why a new building for installation 04, which was destroyed in Halo 1, is currently under construction. Landing on the ark, the Master Chief tries to prevent the rings from activating. He has to deactivate three barriers to get to the control room where the prophet is holed up. After deactivating the third barrier, the Flood lands on the ark with High Charity. To stop the Prophet, the Master Chief makes a pact with the Gravemind and helps him get to the Prophet in the control room. The master kills the prophet of truth. Previously, the Prophet killed Commander Keyes. Sgt. Johnson, who was also present at the time, could only watch.

Now that the pact with the Gravemind has been fulfilled, the Gravemind changes sides. The Flood, which previously protected the Chief, attacks him.

Now that High Charity is on the ark, the task is to save Cortana. The Chief makes his way to High Charity, saves Cortana and initiates the destruction of High Charity, which also destroys the Gravemind. Now the containment of the flood has to be secured. Because installation 04 is currently under construction, it can already be activated in the control center of the ring. The master, Cortana, and the chief head to the control center. To get there, they have to fight their way through a horde of Flood again, supported by Sgt. Johnson, who came on the UNSC ship "Forward Unto Dawn". When he arrives at the control center, the chief loads Cortana into the control room's memory. Since she still has the index of facility 04 from Halo 1, she can activate the ring.

Since the activation of the ring would also be its destruction at the same time, but it is not yet completely finished, 343 Guilty Spark now wants to prevent the activation, because it is "his" facility and he has to protect it. Sgt. Johnson dies while attempting to stop 343 Guilty Spark. The Chief and the Master defeat the Illuminati and initiate the fire sequence. Both flee with Halo's "Forward Unto Dawn", unfortunately too late as the fire sequence has already started. The ship is torn in two.

Both survive the incident; however, only the master can return to earth. The Master Chief, on the other hand, is trapped with the artificial intelligence Cortana in a separate part of the spaceship that was used to escape from the installation, and puts himself in a capsule on board in cryostasis, around the time until an emergency call sent by Cortana is answered, to survive. The Alliance units withdraw from Earth, connected with the end of the war.

If you complete the game on the "Legendary" level of difficulty, the end credits sequence expands. The Master Chief puts himself in stasis, as in the ending shown on easier difficulty levels. However, the sequence does not end here. You can now see the wreckage of the spaceship from the outside and the rising sun, which reveals a planet that is covered with glowing structures (probably cities). In Halo 4 it becomes clear that this planet is presumably Requiem.

Innovations

Model made by Mongoose

New vehicles were added (e.g .: the Brute Chopper, the Hornet), various new weapons such as spikes, Spartan lasers, spiked grenades, incendiary grenades and various pieces of equipment. Of these are u. a. Step mine, gravitational lift, bubble shield, stun grenade, regenerator, radar jammer, energy extractor, transportable shield and cloak in multiplayer and single player mode. There is also an automatic gun and short-term invincibility in single player mode. In addition, it is now possible to accommodate fixed guns and homing rocket launchers, although the ammunition is limited. The HUD interface has been redesigned, i. H. the HUD icons have been redesigned and arranged so that they appear to be seen from a helmet.

There are also newer, stronger types of flood, e.g. B. the resistant brood form or the shape-changing pure form.

Bungie has developed an edit mode called The Forge . No new maps can be created with this, only existing levels can be changed to a limited extent. Vehicles, objects, weapons, equipment, respawn points etc. can be re-placed or added. If the game is in Forge mode, you can play and edit at the same time. The player appears as a Forerunner Monitor (Illuminat) and remains vulnerable in the game, like the other players. Bungie therefore doesn't see Forge as an editing tool, but as a variant of the multiplayer mode. Eight players can play in Forge mode on Xbox Live.

In Halo 3 multiplayer mode, every player can achieve current military ranks. These are assessed based on ability and experience. Typically, each player starts out as a recruit and works their way up as far as they can. However, this system is exploited by dishonest players who always devalue their experience points and then play against higher ranking players. This has the consequence that they themselves rise faster (in the highest skill) and the opponents descend faster. Such players are also called "boosters" and are often found on the list of avoided players. Furthermore, you can earn many different medals in Halo 3, such as a certain series of kills in a row. All of a player's medals can be viewed on the official Bungie website.

In Halo 3 is also the possibility, pictures, movies and short clips from the own games to create. The film recordings are processed in the so-called cinema. You can develop a recording of the last 25 games played and then save it. These films can also be made available online via Xbox Live so that friends or other players can also participate in the films. This process is known as “file sharing”.

With Halo 3 it is for the first time also possible to play the co-op mode via Xbox Live with up to four (instead of the previous two) players .

Multiplayer mode

The game offers online battles with up to 16 players and an online co-op mode in which up to four players can play the campaign together.

Versions

The legendary version

In addition to the normal version, the game was also released as a Limited and Legendary Edition . The latter consists of three CD-ROMs (game, making-of and community films such as “Red vs Blue” and “This Spartan Life”, as well as a bonus disc only available in this version, which contains all video sequences from the campaigns from Halo and Halo 2 revised) and a Master Chief helmet replica as a stand. Microsoft only kept the Legendary Edition available for free for a few US journalists, along with an Xbox 360 worth a total of 800 US dollars.

Halo 3: ODST

Developer of ODST ( from left to right : CJ Cowan, Paul Bertone, Joseph Staten and Martin O'Donnell)

Halo 3: ODST was officially launched on October 9, 2008 at the Tokyo Game Show under the name Halo 3: Recon . On November 25, 2008, it was renamed Halo 3: ODST . The game is a stand-alone - add-on to Halo 3 for the Xbox 360. It's time the plot of Halo 2 settled shortly after the Prophet of Regret's bound within New Mombasa Slipspace. The player does not take on the role of the Master Chief, but that of an UNSC-ODST-Marine, who is a newcomer (rookie) in the troop of the ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers). The ODST are known under the name "Helljumper". They wear this thanks to their risky way of being deposited on a planet. For this they use the “Human Entry Vehicle” (HEV), a falling one-man capsule. The publication was on September 22nd, 2009. As with Halo 3 , the game was advertised with a live-action campaign that shows an ODST recruit fighting the aliens.

A special feature of Halo 3: ODST is the firefight mode (firefight). This could be played by the general public for the first time during gamescom 2009. In this mode, the players play together against incoming waves of opponents. For each opponent killed, the player receives a different amount of points, which can then be used to determine the winner. This makes this mode stand out from all other multiplayer games in the Halo universe.

On May 30, 2015, Halo 3: ODST was released as a paid download extension to the Master Chief Collection .

literature

Various literature and special soundtracks such as Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST , both of which were composed by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori , appeared for the games in general .

successor

In 2011, Microsoft announced Halo 4 at the E3 game fair . The work developed by developer 343 Industries was the beginning of a new Halo trilogy called Reclaimer . The action starts four years after Halo 3 .
