action
The film retells the Formula 1 career of the Brazilian Ayrton Senna from 1984 to his accidental death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 . Numerous film sequences and photos, some of which have not been published before, are shown, commented on by contemporary witnesses such as Ron Dennis , Alain Prost , Frank Williams and Senna's family. For the first time, recordings of the driver briefings before the races can be seen in the film.
Reviews
“The decision to compose the documentation exclusively from archive material, at least on the image level, has proven to be a stroke of genius. Although contemporary witnesses [...] have their say several times, they never appear in the picture. In addition to a virtuoso montage, it is not least this simple but efficient trick that makes 'Senna' appear almost like a fast-paced fictional film made from one piece. "
“Asif Kapadia approaches - sometimes quite glorifying - the myth of this extraordinary athlete [...]. [...] The documentary [...] impresses with previously unpublished footage, numerous contemporary witnesses and racing colleagues accompany the fascinating and harrowing images with off-screen comments.
