James Marsh (2009)

James Marsh (born April 30, 1963 in Truro , Cornwall ) is a British film director and documentary filmmaker , best known for his cult film Wisconsin Death Trip (1999) with Marcus Monroe and Ian Holm . He won an Oscar in 2008 for the documentary Man on Wire .

Film career

Marsh studied at St. Catherine's College in Oxford and began his film career with various documentaries for the BBC . His first documentary was Troubleman - The Last Years of Marvin Gaye about the singer Marvin Gaye , followed by The Magician of Prague about Jan Švankmajer and his work as a surrealist film director. It was followed by The Burger and the King: The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley on Elvis Presley and his eating disorders . and a documentary on John Cale (1998). He also produced three episodes of the Arena documentary series .

In 2005 he directed The King , a drama movie about a discharged soldier from the United States Navy who goes in search of his missing father in Corpus Christi , Texas . The film was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2005 .

In 2008 he made the documentary Man on Wire about Philippe Petit and his tightrope act about the Twin Towers , which won him not only the Oscar, but also the British Academy Film Award , the Independent Spirit Award , a nomination for the European Film Awards and the Sundance Film Festival brought in the jury award and the audience award for best foreign documentary film .

Project Nim followed in 2011 via Elizabeth Hess ' book Nim Chimpsky: The Chimp Who Would Be Human and in 2012 Shadow Dancer via the IRA .
