The German premiere was from September 29 to November 17, 2016 on Sky Atlantic HD . The focus is on the fate of a young American of Pakistani descent (played by Riz Ahmed ), who is accused of murdering a young woman.

The series is a remake of the first season of the BBC UK miniseries Criminal Justice , which aired in 2008.

action

New York , Present: Nasir “Naz” Khan is a Pakistani-American college student who lives with his family in Jackson Heights, Queens . When he was secretly taking his father's taxi one evening to go to a party, a young woman happened to get in his home. The same age, mysterious Andrea fascinates Nasir and he decides instead to spend the night with her. Andrea takes the sexually inexperienced Nasir home with her. She gives him MDMA and ketamine and both of them let themselves be carried away by alcohol and other drugs to a five-finger knife game in which Andrea is injured in the hand. When they go upstairs to Andrea's bedroom and have sex together, Nasir passes out.

Hours later, Nasir wakes up in the kitchen. When he goes into the bedroom to get his things and to say goodbye to Andrea, he finds her stabbed to death in her bed in a pool of blood. Nasir, who does not remember the crime, flees the house in a panic, taking the ketamine and the murder weapon. A few streets away, he was stopped by a police patrol by accident, which took him into custody for being unable to drive. Shortly afterwards, the patrol is called to Andrea's house, where her body is discovered. A connection between Nasir and the murder victim is only discovered by chance at the police station hours later, when the alleged criminal record is found on him. At the same time, Detective Dennis Box, who was investigating the murder, arrives and an eyewitness who saw Nasir walking into the house with Andrea incriminates him heavily.

Shortly after Nasir's arrest, John Stone, who happened to arrive at the station, took care of him. Stone, who is divorced and has a skin condition, gets petty criminals legal deals at a fixed price. Shortly before the start of the media-laden process, however, he is replaced by the successful lawyer Alison Crowe. Crowe sees the murder charge against the Muslim student as her chance. She tries to get Nasir into a deal with the prosecutor Helen Weiss and plead for manslaughter, which would bring him "only" 15 years in prison. Nasir does not want to plead guilty for the murder of Andrea, whereupon Crowe angrily withdraws from the case.

In the following jury trial, Nasir is again represented by Stone and Crowe's colleague Chandra Kapoor, who are both investigating privately. Nasir is relocated to the prison island of Rikers Island . There he is taken under the wing of the influential inmate and former prize boxer Freddy Knight, who is incarcerated for murder. Nasir receives protection from Freddy. In return, Nasir begins smuggling drugs from the interrogation rooms into prison. To this end, he also later uses Chandra, who has fallen in love with Nasir. Nasir adapts in prison and changes his appearance greatly by shaving his bald head and getting tattoos. Nasir's family also suffered from their son's murder charges. Nasir's father Salim does not get back the taxi that was confiscated by the police and which he shares with two other colleagues. Nasir's mother Safar loses her job and soon has doubts about the son's innocence. Nasir's younger brother is exposed to hostility at school and begins to fight back, which is why he is later given leave of absence from school.

During the trial it turns out that Andrea suffered from mental health problems and was a drug addict. Nasir, on the other hand, financed his business studies by selling prescription drugs to fellow students and has attracted attention in a violent manner. While prosecutor Weiss focuses solely on Nasir as the perpetrator, Stone and Chandra present three other possible suspects. Among them is Andreas' stepfather, Don Taylor. He argued with her about her late mother's million dollar estate. Chandra has Nasir testify in court about Stone's concerns. When Stone receives video footage of a kiss between Nasir and Chandra from custody, he uses it with Nasir's consent to intentionally break the process. Instead, Chandra is released from litigation and later loses her job at Alison Crowe's law firm. Finally, the anxious Stone has to make the plea for Nasir.

Despite several days of deliberations, the jury is undecided - the ratio of votes is 6: 6. Nasir is released and returns to his family, where only his father has undoubtedly believed in his innocence. The family is deeply in debt from the legal costs of the process and has to sell their home. Nasir returns to the shore of Fort Washington Park, overlooking the George Washington Bridge , where he spent time with Andrea. He remembers them and uses drugs. Prosecutor Weiss decides to reopen the murder case with the now retired Detective Box. Box, not entirely convinced of Nasir's guilt, had investigated on his own. Based on new video evidence, he suspects that Andrea was murdered by her financial advisor and former partner Ray Halle, who was also in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene that fateful night. Halle had high gambling debts, secretly enriched himself with Andreas' fortune and a few hours earlier had a violent argument with her. Nasir's attorney John Stone returns home, where despite his asthma, he has given Andrea's cat a new home. After a phone call, he rushes to the next client.

background

Back in September 2012, the series was planned by HBO as a remake of the British BBC miniseries Criminal Justice . With James Gandolfini as producer, a pilot episode was filmed in which he himself also played the lead role of lawyer John Stone. Richard Price was hired as the scriptwriter, and Steven Zaillian took over the direction . After Gandolfini's death in June 2013, Robert De Niro was under discussion as his successor, but he canceled due to scheduling problems. In April 2014, HBO announced that John Turturro would cast the intended lead role of De Niro. James Gandolfini is posthumously listed as one of the producers.
