main characters

Harry Potter

Harry James Potter (born July 31, 1980 in Godric's Hollow ), the main character of the story, is the son of the witch Lily and the wizard James Potter . He lost his parents at the age of 15 months to the deadly curse " Avada Kedavra ", carried out by Lord Voldemort , the most powerful dark wizard of his time. Harry is the first known wizard to survive this curse as he was protected by his mother's love who sacrificed her life for him. The curse fell back on Voldemort and almost killed him himself, so that he physically no longer existed for years and the wizarding world was freed from him for the time being. These events made Harry famous as "the boy who survived" as a baby.

Harry has his mother's green eyes, tousled, jet-black hair that sticks out at the neck like his father's, wears glasses with round lenses and is rather small and narrow for his age. He has had a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead since Voldemort's attempted murder. He has a very good intuition that is "almost always correct" ( Remus Lupine , Volume 7) and a rather "hot temper" ( Albus Dumbledore , Volume 7). He is selfless and humble; Harry always judges his fellow human beings by their character and never pays attention to their appearance or status, e.g. B. Purity of Blood . He saves the lives of several people, although they may seek his death or that of his friends (e.g. Draco Malfoy twice during the Battle of Hogwarts in Volume 7). He pursues things he believes in with perseverance, bravery and self-confidence.

Harry spent his childhood with his aunt Petunia Dursley's family , his mother's sister, in the London suburb of Little Whinging , Surrey. The Dursleys are non- magical people ( Muggles ) who reject everything foreign and especially the wizarding world. They lie to him that his parents were killed in a car accident and treat him badly, for example he has to live in the closet under the stairs. On his eleventh birthday Harry learns the truth about himself, his parents and Hogwarts , the school for wizards and witches he will go to after the holidays, from Hagrid , the Hogwarts gamekeeper . He travels there on the Hogwarts Express with many other first years and is assigned to House Gryffindor by the Sorting Hat . His schoolmates Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger soon become his best friends, as does the headmaster Albus Dumbledore as a mentor and Hagrid as a close relative. Harry also meets Ron's family, the Weasleys . Ron's parents treat him like their own child and give him that longed-for piece of parental security that he never experienced in the Dursley house. Harry Sucher has been on the Quidditch team of his house since his first year at Hogwarts, and from the age of six also their captain.

At the center of the story, and Harry's school days at Hogwarts, is the ongoing threat from Lord Voldemort, whom Harry faces repeatedly in a life-and-death battle. After Harry managed to regain his body at the end of Harry's fourth year of school, the connection between Harry and Voldemort increasingly crystallized, making it possible to look into each other's minds and thoughts. Harry also has the ability to talk to snakes ( Parseltongue ), which - as it turns out - was transferred to him during the attempted murder by Voldemort. At the end of his fifth year of school, Dumbledore reveals the prophecy that was made shortly before his birth and announced Voldemort's chosen opponent, who alone would have the power to defeat him. From then on he is also considered "the chosen one" in the magical world and, accompanied by Dumbledore, explores the career of Voldemort, whose knowledge should help Harry in his fight against him. At the end of his sixth grade, Harry decides not to return to Hogwarts and instead continues the search for Voldemort's Horcruxes begun by Dumbledore . Hermione and Ron help him with this. The three friends return at the end of the seventh volume in the course of the all-important Battle for Hogwarts, where Harry learns that while attempting to kill him, Voldemort's soul split, making him a seventh Horcrux, which neither of them did until the end of the seventh volume white. Harry manages to defeat Voldemort.

Harry marries Ron's sister Ginny and has children James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna Potter with her. Rowling has also revealed that in his later life, under Shacklebolt's leadership, he will become head of Auror headquarters at the Ministry of Magic .

Harry acquires various items that are significant for the course of the story, such as a racing broom (first the Nimbus 2000, later the Firebolt ), the Marauder's map , an invisibility cloak that he inherited from his father, that of his killed in the fifth volume Godfather Sirius Black inherited the house on Grimmauldplatz and a snowy owl named Hedwig , which Hagrid gave him for his eleventh birthday. She dies in the seventh volume. Harry also becomes the legal owner of the elder wand .

Hermione Granger

Hermione Jean Granger (English Hermione ) (born September 19, 1979) is the best friend of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. She comes from a Muggle family; her parents are dentists. Hermione is described as a girl or adolescent with brown, bushy hair and brown eyes. Up to a magical reduction in the fourth book, she has noticeably large front teeth. She is very clever and inquisitive and can often help her friends with problems with her knowledge of magic, which sometimes gets on their nerves. Hermione suffers from fear of failure despite her intelligence. She has owned a hangover-like animal named Crookshanks since the beginning of the third year of school.

Since the fourth volume, Hermione has been determined to free all house-elves , and especially those at Hogwarts, from their "slavery" whether they like it or not. For this purpose she founds a school initiative called B.ELFE.R. ( B and ELFE n R real, in the original "SPEW" S ociety for the P ROMOTION of E lfish W elfare), which, however, hardly anyone wants to join. Harry and Ron are the first members, but not really convinced of B.ELFE.R. To everyone's surprise, Hermione goes to the Christmas ball with the famous seeker Viktor Krum that same year . She is also the person Krum has to get from the bottom of the Black Lake as part of the second task of the Triwizard Tournament .

Hermione has been committed to Harry's success at the Triwizard Tournament from the beginning and believes him as one of the few people that he didn't throw his name into the goblet of fire. In her fifth year, Hermione is named a Gryffindor Prefect along with Ron. In the same year she is the driving force behind Harry to found the DA and participates in the fight for prophecy in the Ministry of Magic and in the sixth volume in the fight in the Astronomy Tower. During her journey with Harry and Ron in search of Voldemort's Horcruxes, Hermione stands loyally by Harry's side and is his primary advisor. Due to her strong acumen, her level-headedness and her extraordinary abilities as a witch, she is always able to recognize the core of her problems and to find an appropriate solution. She saves the lives of her friends several times and is instrumental in the success of her mission (finding the horcruxes and destroying them).

As already indicated in the previous books, in the course of the plot of the sixth volume it becomes obvious that Hermione has fallen in love with Ron. In the seventh volume, the two finally become a couple. In the epilogue of the seventh volume, the reader learns that Hermione and Ron are getting married and have at least two children (Rose and Hugo). In addition, Rowling has revealed, Hermione holds a number of important positions in the Ministry of Magic, in which she can specifically (and successfully) advocate for the rights of those who are oppressed in the wizarding world, including Muggle-born wizards and house-elves.

Joanne K. Rowling borrowed the original name Hermione from Shakespeare's work Ein Wintermärchen . In the fourth volume, Rowling explains the correct pronunciation by having Hermione slowly say her name to Viktor Krum: "Her-my-oh-nee".

Ron Weasley

Ronald Bilius Weasley (born March 1, 1980), called Ron, is Harry and Hermione's best friend . Like them, he is a member of the Gryffindor family at Hogwarts. He is the second youngest child of Arthur and Molly Weasley . Ron comes from an extended family and has five older brothers ( Bill , Charlie , Percy , Fred and George ) and a younger sister ( Ginny ).

Ron is described as tall and lanky, with large hands and feet and a long nose. He has blue eyes and, like all Weasleys, red hair and lots of freckles. Ron suffers from being overshadowed by his older brothers in every way. You were a Quidditch captain, head boy, and very good student. Ron also has to wear and use a lot of her old things, be it brooms, clothes or pets ("scabies"), since his family does not have enough money to finance new equipment for each of the numerous children. Since the end of the third volume he has had a little owl named Pigwidgeon , which Sirius Black gives him as a substitute for "Scabies". Ron is a good chess player, which he proves at the end of the first volume. He is also a very good Quidditch player, but initially cannot cope with the pressure to perform and is therefore mocked by the Slytherins. In the fifth year he becomes the guardian of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He is also named Gryffindor Prefect along with Hermione. Ron has been scared of spiders since he was three years old , because his brother Fred turned his teddy bear into a spider and had terrified Ron with it.

Ron meets Harry in front of platform 9 ¾ and joins him in the compartment on the Hogwarts Express . They understand each other straight away. Together with Hermione, whom they initially dislike, they soon form an inseparable trio. Despite Ron's and Hermione's friendship, hardly a day has passed since the third year of school without the two of them arguing over some minor matter. In his sixth year at the latest, it becomes clear that Ron has fallen in love with Hermione. However, the two only become a couple in the seventh volume. Ron destroys a Horcrux with Godric Gryffindor's sword and, together with Hermione, also destroys a second one with the help of a basilisk fang.

After his time at Hogwarts, he married Hermione and had two children with her, Rose and Hugo. He also worked for a while in the Auror headquarters of the Ministry of Magic, which is headed by Harry, before joining his brother George's joke business as a partner.

Phineas Nigellus Black

Phineas Nigellus Black (1847 - 1925) is the great-great-grandfather of Sirius and is considered the most unpopular former headmaster of Hogwarts. A portrait of him has been in the headmaster's office since his death. In the fifth volume he is, albeit reluctantly, the messenger of messages between Dumbledore and Sirius or Harry during their stays at Grimmauld Place 12. When Harry, Ron and Hermione are on their search for the Horcruxes at Grimmauld Place 12, Hermione takes his portrait there with on the trip, but conjures up a magical blindfold for him so that he cannot reveal her current whereabouts to Snape. Nevertheless, Black manages to give Snape an important tip about Harry and Hermione's camp in the Forest of Dean . Snape uses the information to bring Harry Gryffindor's sword, which can be used to destroy Horcruxes.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (* 1881; † 1997) is the headmaster of Hogwarts until his death at the end of the sixth volume . He is a slender and tall wizard, has long silver hair and a long silver beard, bright blue eyes and wears half-moon glasses on his hooked nose. His patronus is shaped like a phoenix and he also owns a real phoenix named Fawkes . Dumbledore is humorous, secretly enjoys pranks and disrespect on his students, and enjoys eating sweets. As one of the most deserving wizards of the present, Dumbledore was awarded the "Order of Merlin (1st Class)". As a “very high animal” he was chairman of the “International Association of Wizards” and a long-time grandmaster of the “Wizengamot”.

Dumbledore spent his youth in Godric's Hollow , Harry's later birthplace. His mother, Kendra, was Muggle-born, and his father was a wizard. In Godric's Hollow, Dumbledore met his future enemy, the black magician Grindelwald . With him he searched for the sanctuaries of death for a while . After Grindelwald had built a reign of terror abroad, there was a duel with Dumbledore in 1945, which the latter won. He took Grindelwald's wand, the Elder wand , with him. The triumph over Grindelwald is one of Dumbledore's greatest successes. Dumbledore was offered the post of Minister of Magic several times, which he declined on the grounds that he was not interested in a career in the Ministry; There is nothing he likes more than training young people. He also said that he should not be entrusted with too much power. Before he became the Headmaster of Hogwarts, he was the Transfiguration teacher . He is the founder and “keeper of secrets” of the Order of the Phoenix . He has a scar above his left knee that is shaped like the London Underground map .

Dumbledore decided right after Harry's parents died that his aunt and uncle should raise him. Dumbledore is, besides Harry, one of the few who dare to call Lord Voldemort by name. In his view, "fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself". He visited the young Tom Riddle in the orphanage where he grew up and noticed already then that something was wrong with Riddle. Dumbledore decided to keep an eye on Riddle and brought him to Hogwarts as a student. Dumbledore passes on his findings to Harry in the sixth volume in order to prepare him for his fight against Voldemort. At the end of the sixth volume he is killed by Severus Snape with the " Avada-Kedavra " curse. This, as it later turns out, is at Dumbledore's request; he would soon have died anyway from a slowly advancing curse. After his death, a portrait of him automatically appears in the headmaster's office.

Dumbledore means bumblebee in early New English . Rowling announced that she had imagined Dumbledore walking around and humming to herself and that was why she chose the name.

In October 2007, Rowling said she had always imagined Dumbledore as gay. Gellert Grindelwald was the great love in his youth.

Minerva McGonagall

Minerva McGonagall is the Transfiguration teacher and Head of House for Gryffindor . She is portrayed as strict, strong-willed and just. As an animagus , she is able to transform into a tiger cat with a silvery fur. Her patronus figure is also a tiger cat. McGonagall is the deputy headmistress and then the acting headmistress until Dumbledore's death. She belongs to the Order of the Phoenix. In the seventh volume she is still Head of House for Gryffindor and helps Harry to set up a school army with teachers and adult students against Voldemort.

Rowling said in a later interview that McGonagall was headmaster for several years after Severus Snape's death until she retired.

Severus Snape

Severus Snape (born January 9, 1960, † May 2, 1998) is up to the sixth volume of the tutor of Slytherin and up to the fifth volume teacher of potions . In Harry's sixth year, he was given a teaching position in Defense Against the Dark Arts , which had been his favorite subject since he started teaching. Its apartments and classrooms are located in the underground vaults, the "dungeons", of Hogwarts. As a Head of House for Slytherin, he primarily harasses Harry and his Gryffindor classmates and prefers his own house. Neville Longbottom in particular lives in constant fear of Snape. Harry describes him as a man with greasy black hair, a long, crooked nose, and pale skin.

Snape's mother Eileen Prince was a witch, his father Tobias Snape a Muggle, which makes him a "half-breed". As a student at Hogwarts, he referred to himself as the "Half-Blood Prince". With James Potter , Sirius Black , Remus Lupine and Peter Pettigrew , he lived in open hostility in school. Snape was often the victim of the sometimes very rude pranks by James and Sirius. He transfers his enmity with James to his son Harry at the first meeting and does not break away until the end of the sixth volume. Snape had been friends with Harry's mother Lily since childhood , and as it will be known later, in love with her throughout his life. Due to Snape's interest in the Dark Arts and his new friends (the "Death Eaters"), Lily turned away from him over time. The friendship finally broke up after he called Lily, who was defending him in another attack by James Potter, "Mudblood".

As a student in the Slytherin house, Snape became a follower of Lord Voldemort , whom he later joined. He spied on parts of the prophecy of Sibyll Trelawney for Voldemort . Voldemort, who interpreted the information in such a way that he had to kill the son of the Potters, also murdered Lily in the process, although Snape had explicitly begged him to spare his great love. Snape never forgave this momentous betrayal of Lily and turned away from Voldemort. He worked as a double agent at Dumbledore's side and was hired by him as a teacher at Hogwarts. In the years that followed, Snape helped Dumbledore protect Lily's son Harry from Voldemort. This union between the men remains secret at Snape's express request, which Dumbledore regrets very much. Others doubt that Snape actually went over to the good side. In the fifth volume , Snape uses his past as a Death Eater and spies as an agent for the Order of the Phoenix. He also teaches Harry Occlumency (locking the mind), which fails because of the lack of trust between them.

At the beginning of volume six it becomes clear that some Death Eaters, like Bellatrix Lestrange , question Snape's loyalty to Lord Voldemort. While visiting Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy at his home in Spinner's End , he gives Bellatrix precise explanations for all the acts and conduct that might suggest he was on Dumbledore's side to refute their claims. It is only when he takes the "Unbreakable Oath" to Narcissa Malfoy that Bellatrix seems convinced of his loyalty. Snape vows to help Narcissa's son Draco , who was commissioned by Lord Voldemort to kill Dumbledore. In fact, Snape apparently kills Dumbledore in cold blood with the " Avada Kedavra " curse. In doing so, however, he follows Dumbledore's plan, which on the one hand did not want to burden Draco with the murder and on the other hand would not have long to live anyway due to a fatal curse.

In the seventh volume , Snape is named Headmaster of Hogwarts by the corrupted Ministry of Magic. As planned by Dumbledore, Voldemort is now convinced of and trusts Snape's loyalty. Since Snape continues to secretly follow Dumbledore's plans, he helps Harry with his Patronus, a doe , to Gryffindor's sword, with which the Horcruxes can be destroyed. Voldemort, who does not suspect Snape's role until the end, lets Nagini kill him by the serpent, believing that he will gain full power over the Elder Wand . Harry, Ron and Hermione find Snape just before his death. He leaves Harry his memories that reveal his past and motives.

In the epilogue to the seventh volume, the younger of Harry's sons, Albus Severus, worries that he might be assigned to the Slytherin house instead of the Gryffindor house. Harry then says to him, “You are named after two headmasters at Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I have ever known. "

Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Jane Umbridge first appears in the fifth volume in the series when Dumbledore is forced by the Ministry of Magic to hire her as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher . She is the First Undersecretary and a close confidante of the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge , who tries to fight the supposedly "sinking level" of Hogwarts with her occupation. Umbridge is equally unpopular with teachers and most of the students at Hogwarts. She is compared to a toad by Harry and his friends (nicknamed "Toad Face") because of her wide, sagging mouth and uncomfortable clothing. She speaks in a high, girlish voice that doesn't suit her. Her graceful laughter and constant coughing, with which she interrupts others, are perceived as unpleasant.

Like the Ministry of Magic, Umbridge denies the return of Voldemort and accordingly considers practical experience in the subject she taught as unimportant. Her always theoretical lessons consist mostly of just letting the students read the textbook. Ultimately, Umbridge rises to be the Grand Inquisitor of Hogwarts to increase the influence of the Ministry of Magic on the school, and thus secures almost unlimited power. She later became a brief headmaster at Hogwarts. Harry in particular has suffered from Umbridge's malevolent machinations, having repeatedly made him do detention as he adamantly claims that Voldemort has returned and regained his old power. He has to write the sentence "I shouldn't tell lies!" Repeatedly in his own blood until it is finally carved so deep into Harry's skin that fine white scars remain. Umbridge is supported by the caretaker Argus Filch and an auxiliary force - the "Inquisition Squad" - from Slytherin students , including Draco Malfoy .

Since Umbridge has a great dislike of "half- men ", she puts Hagrid's teacher status , whose mother was a giantess, on "probation". During the ZAG fifth grade exams, Umbridge, with the help of four Aurors, drives Hagrid out of Hogwarts in a "night and mist" action, and she approves of the fact that Professor McGonagall will be seriously injured when she rushes to help Hagrid. At the end of the fifth volume, the reader learns that it was she who independently ordered the Dementor attack on Harry and his cousin in Little Whinging. Nor does she shy away from using a "Cruciatus" curse to force Harry to reveal information about a suspected conspiracy of Dumbledore against the Ministry, which Hermione prevents with a diversionary maneuver. She and Harry lure the unloved Headmistress into the Forbidden Forest, where - as Hermione hoped - they encounter the centaurs who kidnap Umbridge into the depths of the forest. She is freed from Dumbledore, who has returned to Hogwarts, and leaves Hogwarts a little later amid boos and abuse from the students, the teachers and the poltergeist Peeves.

In the seventh volume she works again as First Undersecretary of the Minister and Chairman of the Registration Commission for Muggle-born ( Muggle-born Registration Commission ). In this capacity, she leads show trials after Voldemort came to power, in which Muggleborns are tried in Azkaban. Harry, Ron and Hermione learn that they extorted Slytherin's locket from Mundungus Fletcher without knowing that it was a Horcrux . The three of them take it from her when they break into the Ministry and destroy it with the sword of Gryffindor. According to JK Rowling, she is later arrested for her role in the Muggleborn registry.

Head of House

Gryffindor

Hufflepuff

Pomona Sprout

Pomona Sprout (born May 15) is the herbalism teacher and tutor at Hufflepuff. It is mostly found in the Hogwarts greenhouses. Their clothes are often soiled with earth. In the second volume she breeds mandrakes in order to revive the students petrified by the basilisk .

In the run-up to the second battle for Hogwarts, she spurs on the fighting spirit of the somewhat fearful Professor Flitwick by showing her determination to defend Hogwarts for as long and as violently as possible, even if the fight against Voldemort ultimately seems hopeless. While she gathers her Hufflepuff students around her, she ponders with grim anticipation which of the nasty and dangerous magical plants from her greenhouse she would like to unleash on the Death Eaters.

Ravenclaw

Filius Flitwick

Filius Flitwick (born October 17) is the magic teacher and tutor of Ravenclaw . He has goblins in his family tree and is therefore unusually small. During class he stands on a pile of books behind his desk so that he can overlook them at all. When he in the sixth volume in penetrating the Death Eater Snape wants to get to help, he is of this with a stunning spell out of action. Flitwick was an excellent duel fighter in his younger years. He proves this during the Battle of Hogwarts at the end of the seventh volume by defeating the Death Eater Antonin Dolohow in a duel.

Slytherin

Horace Slughorn

Horace Slughorn is from the sixth band teacher for Potions in Hogwarts . He held this post while Tom Riddle was at school and was Head of Slytherin House . Harry and Headmaster Dumbledore persuade him to return to Hogwarts. He succeeds Severus Snape , and after his defection to the Death Eaters at the end of the school year, he takes over from him again as Head of Slytherin House. Slughorn is an exceptional Slytherin figure in the book because despite his negative traits, he is not malicious.

In his earlier active teaching career, Slughorn gathered particularly gifted students, thereby creating an important network of wizards to his advantage. Tom Riddle was just as much a member of his "slug club" as his favorite student Lily Potter (née Evans) . During his return to Hogwarts, he was reliving the club on the Hogwarts Express . In addition to Harry and other students from well-known wizarding families, he also invites Muggle-born Hermione , as her school achievements impress him.

Slughorn shows typical Slytherin traits such as intelligence, determination and a thirst for power. He also has the talent to flatter others and to find the right words for all occasions. His potions brewing ability is at least equal to that of Snapes. In addition, there is an outstanding specialist knowledge of both the conventional and the dark side of the magic arts. Slughorn chooses his acquaintances and protégés only on the basis of influence and ability. People who fail to meet his standards are quickly dropped and ignored. This selection also means, however, that the Slytherins' disgust for Muggleborns is not shared by Slughorn, because both Lily Potter and Hermione Granger were or are being ensnared by him. In spite of everything, he detests the dark arts , for hatred and cruelty are alien to his nature. Since the news of Voldemort's return, Slughorn changed his whereabouts several times before resuming his teaching at Hogwarts, as he rightly fears that his knowledge will be abused by Death Eaters.

Slughorn played a tragic role in the development of Lord Voldemort. It was he who taught him the importance of the Horcruxes that enabled Voldemort to survive after meeting Harry for the first time. Slughorn is ashamed of this and vehemently refuses to show this memory to his friend Dumbledore when he tries to clarify the background of Lord Voldemort. Harry finally succeeds with a bottle of the magic potion Felix Felicis , which Slughorn gave Harry due to a best solved task in class, to bring this memory back to himself and to show it to Dumbledore.

Slughorn is the only Slytherin who fights on the side of the defenders in the Battle of Hogwarts, and shortly before Harry fights Voldemort in the final battle, he even fought the same with Minerva McGonagall and Kingsley Shacklebolt .

Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher

The Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position is very unpopular, as the professors who teach this subject have been leaving after just one school year due to death, illness or dismissal for decades. The reason for this is a curse with which Tom Riddle occupied the post, since he himself (despite two attempts) was never selected as a teacher for this subject. Voldemort's curse is extinguished by his death at the end of the seventh volume. Apart from Tom Riddle, Severus Snape is the only known character in the books who seeks the position as a teacher for this subject and, like Tom Riddle, is always turned down. It was not until Harry's sixth year that Snape received the longed-for position from Dumbledore.

Prof. Quirrell (1st grade)

Quirinus Quirrell (his first name was posted on Pottermore) is a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter's freshman year . He is described as fearful and insecure. Quirrell serves as host and is controlled by the spirit of Lord Voldemort undetected . On Voldemort's instructions, he tries to kill Harry during the school year and to usurp the Philosopher's Stone . The attempt to forcibly snatch the stone from Harry fails because of the existing protective spell, which has already thwarted Voldemort's first attempt at murder of Harry - Quirrell cannot touch Harry without perishing. Voldemort realizes his defeat, flees and leaves Quirrell's body to die.

Gilderoy Lockhart (2nd grade)

Gilderoy Lockhart replaces Professor Quirrell as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry's sophomore year . Lockhart appears as a handsome and vain self-promoter whose main interest is maintaining his popularity, especially with witches. He became famous as the author of his advisors and the description of great heroic deeds - always with himself as a hero. Other wizards actually experienced these stories; he stole their memories with a memory charm. Apart from this spell, he himself has no special knowledge or skills. The attempt to use a memory spell to prevent Ron and Harry from revealing his secret fails thanks to Ron's defective wand and Lockhart himself loses all memory. Since then he has been treated in the closed ward of St. Mungo Hospital for magical illnesses and injuries without his amnesia improving. According to JK Rowling, Lockhart is modeled after a real person whose identity she does not reveal.

Remus Lupine (3rd grade)

Remus John Lupine (March 10, 1960 - May 2, 1998) is the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry's third year. Lupine was transformed into a werewolf as a child by a bite by Fenrir Greyback and has been transforming every full moon ever since . To make his visit to Hogwarts possible at that time, a secret passage to the Howling Hut was created, where he spent the nights of the full moon. The opening of the secret passage was protected by the Whomping Willow . His friends at Hogwarts became Animagi for his sake, so that they could safely accompany him during his phases as a werewolf: James Potter turned into a deer (nicknamed "Crown"), Sirius Black into a dog ("paw") and Peter Pettigrew ( "Wormtail") into a rat. Together with Lupine ("Moony") they created the Marauder's Map . In his time as a teacher, Lupine teaches Harry the " Patronus " spell as a protection against the dementors . An uncontrolled werewolf transformation and an indiscretion from Snape end his Hogwarts career.

As a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Lupine is later tasked with monitoring the werewolves and convincing them not to join Voldemort . Tonks had been in love with him for a long time by this time. However, he was reluctant to have a relationship until Dumbledore's death. They get married a short time later. When Tonks becomes pregnant, Lupine regrets the marriage out of concern that the child might be born a werewolf. However, his son is born healthy and is named after Tonks' father Ted; Harry becomes his godfather.

Remus Lupine dies with Tonks in the Battle of Hogwarts. His death is not described in the books; according to JK Rowling , he is killed by the Death Eater Dolohow.

Rubeus Hagrid

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012 (Rubeus Hagrid) .jpg

Rubeus Hagrid (born December 6, 1928) is a half-giant (Hagrid's father was a magician, his mother was a giantess ), which is almost twice the size of a normal person. In the run-up to the fifth volume, he finds out that he has a half-brother named Grawp. Hagrid works as a gamekeeper at Hogwarts, is also responsible for the maintenance of the grounds of Hogwarts and from Harry's third year a teacher for the care of magical creatures . Hagrid shares this position with Prof. Wilhelmina Raue-Pritsche (in the original Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank ), who always takes his place when he is absent for a longer period ( e.g. on Dumbledore's behalf). He has a male boar named Fang as his permanent pet .

Hagrid has a fondness for wild and dangerous animals, which he considers harmless because he can handle them because of his height and strength. He sees no danger in breeding dragons or spiders the size of elephants, although this is strictly forbidden. He has been wrongly suspected on several occasions of other crimes. He is said to have opened the Chamber of Secrets in his third year of school and was therefore expelled from school and banned from magic. His wand was broken, but there are indications that he hid the remaining parts in a pink umbrella and continues to use it to do illegal magic every now and then. During his teaching activity, he was repeatedly suspended and briefly imprisoned in the wizard's prison in Azkaban .

To Harry, Hagrid is much more than just a teacher. On the night Harry's parents were murdered, Hagrid took him to Little Whinging, on behalf of Dumbledore, to the Dursleys , who were supposed to raise him. Years later, Harry learns from Hagrid that he is a wizard. Since then, a deep friendship has developed between the two and between Hagrid, Ron and Hermione. Hagrid just worships Professor Dumbledore more than Harry. Hagrid is a loving person; he would do anything for his friends, even die. Hagrid is a member of the Phoenix Order. In the defense of the school in the sixth volume, he fights against the Death Eaters.

Hagrid owns a flying motorcycle that Sirius Black gave him. This is almost destroyed in the seventh volume when Hagrid and members of the Phoenix Order escort Harry to the Weasley house and are attacked by Voldemort and his Death Eaters. In her online chat, Rowling wrote that Arthur Weasley was able to repair the motorcycle and that it is now in Harry's possession.

Sibyll Trelawney

Sibyll Patricia Trelawney teaches fortune telling at Hogwarts and is the great-great-granddaughter of the famous seer Cassandra Trelawney. She had an interview with Dumbledore at Boar's Head in Hogsmeade a few weeks before Harry was born , and Dumbledore was not convinced of her abilities. Before he could refuse and leave, however, Trelawney predicted the birth of a boy in late July who would have the power to overthrow Lord Voldemort . The first half of this prophecy was secretly overheard by Severus Snape and betrayed to Lord Voldemort, the second part was known only to Dumbledore for many years. She made a second prediction of Voldemort's return in Harry's third year. Both times, however, she was in a trance and therefore cannot remember anything about it. Otherwise she only has a few "chance hits".

Harry, Ron and Hermione soon think Professor Trelawney is a fraud, while other students like Lavender Brown or Parvati Patil are very impressed by their apparent ability and firmly believe in their predictions. Trelawney has a habit of predicting death for at least one student per year, which is now the case with Harry. In the fifth volume, Dolores Umbridge put her on parole due to her lack of skills and later released her for a short time, although she is allowed to stay at the school due to Dumbledore's commitment. After she got her job back at the end of the school year, she had to share lessons with Firenze , who had filled the job in the meantime, which she really didn't like. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Trelawney throws one of her crystal balls at the werewolf Greyback in order to save the student Lavender Brown.

Rolanda Hooch

Rolanda Hooch teaches a basic course in flying a broom in the first year of Hogwarts school and otherwise acts as the organizer and referee at the Quidditch Cup matches between the Hogwarts houses. She herself learned to fly on a Silberpfeil broom ; their appearance is very reminiscent of a falcon.

Firenze

Firenze is a centaur . Centaurs are generally considered to be very wise and gifted astrologers , some with clairvoyant abilities . In contrast to the other centaurs in the Forbidden Forest, who consider dealing with humans below their dignity and therefore usually avoid them, Firenze does not consider centaurs to be infallible and in Harry's first year does not hesitate to save him from Voldemort . He is taking divination classes in Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts after Professor Umbridge fires Sibyll Trelawney . For this he is excluded from the community of the other centaurs, as evidenced by a hoofprint on his chest. Professor Trelawney, reinstated by Dumbledore, has to share her lessons with Firenze in the sixth volume, to her displeasure.

In the seventh volume, Firenze takes part in the battle for Hogwarts and is injured, but survives. According to JK Rowling, Firenze is later picked up again by his flock, who eventually understand that working with people is not dishonorable or shameful.

Argus Filch

Argus Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts. He is constantly busy monitoring compliance with the school rules. He would like to hang students who break the rules upside down from the ceiling, but Dumbledore does not allow him to do that, even though he has already made numerous requests to do so. His hatred of the students who perform magic comes from the fact that he is a Squib, i.e. comes from a wizarding family, but cannot do magic himself. He is extremely unpopular with students. Filch's loyal companion is his cat, Mrs. Norris . Mrs. Norris is a kind of spy who wanders through the school alone for Filch and alerts him immediately if she sees students breaking the rules. Thanks to Mrs. Norris, Filch gets a lot of what is happening around him at Hogwarts. One of his most stubbornly pursued goals is to catch the poltergeist Peeves and throw him out of the school, as he is constantly bothering him. In the fifth volume, Professor Umbridge gives him permission to whip the students, but he never gets the benefit of using this type of punishment.

Poppy Pomfrey

Madame Pomfrey is the nurse at Hogwarts. She can heal almost all injuries and illnesses - many even in a few seconds - and is always concerned about the rest of her patients. Madame Pomfrey is considering quitting the fifth volume because Dolores Umbridge wants to take over the school. She stays, however, because her greatest concern is the students whom she wants to protect from Umbridge.

The founders of Hogwarts

Godric Gryffindor

Next to Slytherin, Godric Gryffindor is the most famous member of the founding community. Godric Gryffindor comes, like Harry, from the place named after him, Godric's Hollow . Godric Gryffindor was an advocate of Muggle rights and always preferred the bravest of the new students for his Gryffindor house . The coat of arms of the House of Gryffindor bears his mark - a golden lion on a red background. His magic hat is used as a sorting hat to organize the house at Hogwarts.

With Gryffindor's sword forged by goblins , Harry kills the basilisk in the second volume . The sword also destroys three of the six Horcruxes created by Voldemort :

Helga Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff is the co-founder of Hogwarts. She always accepted every student - regardless of their origin and descent - who had a magical talent and for whom helpfulness and loyalty were a matter of course. This “generosity” in the selection also earned Hufflepuff the reputation of producing a particularly large number of “bottles”. The coat of arms of the house is a black badger on a yellow background. A beaker formerly owned by Helga Hufflepuff later became one of Lord Voldemort's seven Horcruxes .

Rowena Ravenclaw

Rowena Ravenclaw is also the co-founder of Hogwarts, who valued wisdom and learning as important virtues in her students. This is also seen in the house named after her , which has a bronze eagle on a blue background - the symbol of understanding - in the coat of arms. Her diadem was turned into a Horcrux by Lord Voldemort and hidden in the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts. Her daughter Helena, who stole this, was murdered by the Bloody Baron and has been the Ravenclaws' ghost as the Gray Lady ever since .

Salazar Slytherin

Salazar Slytherin, the ancestor of Lord Voldemort , was one of the founders of Hogwarts 1000 years ago and, alongside Godric Gryffindor, is considered the best wizard in the founding community. The Slytherin house goes back to him . Cunning, cunning and purity originally belonged to the selection criteria for his students. Slytherin fell out with the rest of the founders because, in his view, only pure-blood wizards have the right to learn magic and dropped out of school. He previously hid a secret chamber deep under the school, the Chamber of Secrets . Only when his true legacy comes to Hogwarts - so the legend has it - he can open the chamber and unleash the horror inside, a basilisk , in order to rid the school of all " mudbloods ". Voldemort, his last living descendant, opens this chamber twice: during his own school days and during Harry's sophomore year by imposing his will on Ginny Weasley from his old diary.

The symbol of the house is a snake because Salazar Slytherin was a Parseltongue . Voldemort and thus indirectly inherited this ability from him. Slytherin's gold medallion, which also features a snake, was transformed into a Horcrux by Lord Voldemort , which is later destroyed by Ron Weasley.

A newly discovered snake was named Trimeresurus salazar in 2020 .

student

Slytherins

Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle

Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle stand out less for their intelligence than for their height and weight. Most of the time they can be found in the company of Draco Malfoy , who orders them around. Crabbes and Goyle's fathers are Death Eaters , the followers of Lord Voldemort . In the seventh volume, Crabbe dies from a "demon fire" that he himself conjured up in the room of wishes. This also destroys a horcrux (diadem by Rowena Ravenclaw ).

Draco Malfoy

Dummy of Draco Malfoy in Slytherin wizarding robe

Draco Malfoy is Harry Potter's archenemy at Hogwarts. He is the only scion of an old, pure-blood wizarding family whose members are traditionally Slytherin members. Like his father Lucius, he is convinced that only pure-blood wizards have the right to be trained at Hogwarts. Accordingly, the Muggleborn students are insulted and bullied by him, including Hermione Granger , whom he repeatedly called " mudblood ". Draco usually does not appear alone, but in the midst of his Slytherin clique, which mainly includes Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe . He is often preferred by his Head of House, Severus Snape . In the fifth volume, Draco is named prefect of Slytherin along with Pansy Parkinson.

Draco's enmity with Harry begins on the first day of school when Draco first insults Ron Weasley and his family on the Hogwarts Express and then offers Harry his friendship, which Harry refuses. In the following years the hostility between the two became more and more complex. Where at the beginning there is only a different house affiliation, general dislike on both sides and Draco's hatred of Harry's friends Ron and Hermione, in the second volume there is the direct rivalry as the seeker of the respective Quidditch house team. In the fifth volume both become the leaders of two warring factions; Draco is the "Inquisition Command" of Dolores Umbridge , while Harry is the leader of his secret student organization "Dumbledore's Army". Harry suspects already in the sixth volume that Draco was accepted into the ranks of the Death Eaters despite his youth and is thus a supporter of Lord Voldemort . Finally, in the same year, there were some direct confrontations with physical attacks.

Up to the sixth volume, Draco is the arrogant scion of the Malfoy family, who shows no feelings and appears to be freezing. He gets the order from Voldemort to kill Albus Dumbledore. With increasing despair, he tried unsuccessfully throughout the sixth year of school to fulfill his assignment. Towards the end of the school year, Harry overhears a conversation between Draco and the Moaning Myrtle , in which Draco shows himself in despair and weeps, fearing for his life and that of his family. It is Draco who enables the Death Eaters to invade Hogwarts in order to fulfill his mission with their help. However, he cannot bring himself to kill Dumbledore, who has already been disarmed by him. Severus Snape takes over this task (as agreed with Dumbledore beforehand) and kills Dumbledore with the Avada-Kedavra curse . Because he disarmed Dumbledore, Draco unwittingly becomes the true owner of the Elder Wand ( Elder Wand , literally: "Elder wand" and / or "Elder wand"). In the seventh volume he loses his wand to Harry, which - also unknowingly - becomes the new owner of the elder wand. Draco tries to stop Harry from destroying a Horcrux in the battle at Hogwarts. Nevertheless, Harry saves his life twice in the episode. Draco is reunited with his family after the fight and 19 years later has a son named Scorpius. According to an interview with Joanne K. Rowling on July 30, 2007, Harry and Draco now meet with mutual appreciation.

More students

In addition to the Slytherins already mentioned, other students of this house are mentioned in the books. Millicent Bulstrode is Hermine Granger's dueling partner in the second volume in the Dueling Club. Believing that she has collected a hair from Millicent, Hermione uses it for the polyjuice potion that she, Harry and Ron use to sneak into the Slytherin common room. But it turns out that the hair comes from Millicent's cat. In addition to Bulstrode, Pansy Parkinson also belongs to Umbridge's "Inquisition Command" in the fifth volume and is the occasional friend of Draco Malfoy. During the Battle for Hogwarts in Volume 7, Pansy is the one who loudly speaks out in favor of handing Harry over to Voldemort. Blaise Zabini and Theodore Nott are also friends of Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and Pansy Parkinson.

Gryffindors

In addition to the main characters Harry , Ron and Hermione , various other Gryffindors repeatedly play a role in the seven volumes.

Katie Bell

Katie Bell is the Slayer on Harry's Quidditch team. In the fifth year of school she joins the "Dumbledore's Army" founded at Hermione's instigation. When Harry captures the Gryffindor squad in sixth grade, Katie is the only original regular with them. On her first outing to Hogsmeade this year, she is badly injured by a bewitched collar that she is supposed to hand over to Dumbledore and cannot play the first games of the season. She has to spend a large part of the school year in St. Mungo's Hospital and can only take part in the last game.

Lavender Brown

Lavender Brown is close friends with Parvati Patil . Both are in the same year as Harry Potter. Like her friend Parvati, Lavender is an avid admirer of Professor Sibyll Trelawney , the fortune telling teacher at Hogwarts. In the fourth volume she goes to the Christmas ball with Seamus Finnigan . Together with Parvati and her twin sister Padma, she joins "Dumbledore's Army" in the fifth year of school. During the sixth grade, Lavender becomes Ron's first girlfriend . He's not really in love with her, however, just with her to prove something to Ginny and to make Hermione jealous. Much to Ron's displeasure and the amusement of his friends, she nicknamed him "Won Won". Their relationship breaks down because of Lavender's jealousy.

In the seventh volume, Lavender participates in the resistance against Snape and the Carrows when Hogwarts is taken over by the Death Eaters, and finally in the second Battle of Hogwarts. She is seriously injured and then bitten by Fenrir Greyback . Meanwhile, JK Rowling announced in an interview that Lavender could be saved and not become a werewolf.

Colin and Dennis Creevey

The two Muggle-born brothers Colin and Dennis Creevey are one and three years younger than Harry and worship him as their hero. Since they are also members of the Gryffindor House, they have ample opportunity to annoy Harry with their constant greetings and penetrating photography. Draco Malfoy takes full advantage of this fact to annoy Harry. In his first (Harry's second) year of school, Colin fell victim to a basilisk and was petrified. He is saved by a mandrake potion . At the end of Volume 7, Colin Creevey is killed in the Battle of Hogwarts, in which he took part illegally after sneaking back after his evacuation from Hogwarts.

Seamus Finnigan

Seamus Finnigan is Dean Thomas' best friend . The blond boy is of Irish descent. His father is a Muggle, his mother a witch. For his father, the realization that he was married to a witch was quite a shock, according to Seamus. The avid wizard chess player is a fan of the Quidditch team "Kenmare Kestrels", whose poster hangs next to his bed. In Gryffindor, he shares the dormitory with Dean Thomas, Neville Longbottom, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. In the fifth volume, he argues with Harry because Seamus' mother claims that Harry and Dumbledore's statements regarding Voldemort's return are false. He later apologizes to Harry and also joins the DA because Harry's interview in the quiver convinces him. Seamus goes to the fourth year ball with Lavender Brown . In the seventh volume he also takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Lee Jordan

Lee Jordan is the Weasley twins' closest friend in the first volume and is with them in one year. He is the stadium announcer at all Quidditch games during his school days. He is regularly admonished by Professor McGonagall , as he is often partisan. In the seventh volume, Lee runs an underground pirate station called Potterwatch , in which he criticizes the Death Eater-controlled Ministry and Voldemort. He appears on the station under the code name "Stromer".

Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom (born July 30, 1980) is described as a somewhat plump, clumsy and very forgetful student. Because of his bumbling manner, he is teased by Draco Malfoy and harassed by Professor Snape in class. His school performance is rather poor, except for herbalism . Neville lives with his grandmother Augusta because his parents ( Alice and Frank Longbottom ) have been tortured by Death Eaters Bellatrix Lestrange and Barty Crouch Jr. went insane and permanently cared for at St. Mungo's Hospital .

Neville's character experiences the most drastic development in the course of history. As his self-confidence grows, which can also be attributed to Harry and Hermione's influence, his academic performance improves. He becomes one of the most avid students in Harry's DA course, which makes him a good student in Defense Against the Dark Arts . He and Luna Lovegood are, besides Harry and his friends Ron, Ginny and Hermione, the only two members of the DA ("Dumbledore's Army") who take part in the battle for the Astronomy Tower at the end of volume six. In his seventh year, Neville is the only one of the five male Gryffindors of her year, along with Seamus, to return to Hogwarts and face the new regime of the Carrows. Neville, meanwhile no longer the fickle and fearful character of the first years, initially secretly continues "Dumbledore's Army" with Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley, and when both girls are no longer at Hogwarts he is their sole head. With the DA he is hindering the work of the new Hogwarts management as much as possible. A few weeks before the final battle, he has to flee because it is now too dangerous for him. He hides in the room of wishes and from there leads a kind of guerrilla fight . He takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts, which he survives. It is Neville who kills Voldemort's serpent Nagini , whose last Horcrux , by cutting off its head with Gryffindor's sword.

Neville was born the day before Harry. Like the Potters, his parents were also members of the Phoenix Order. Due to the prophecy about the birth of an unnamed wizard who was to gain greater power than Voldemort, he planned to murder Neville in addition to Harry. However, when Voldemort first managed to visit the Potters, he unconsciously fulfilled the prophecy and only justified Harry's fate as the "chosen one". According to Dumbledore, the prophecy could originally have applied to Neville, but Neville never learns about this in the course of history. He later becomes a professor of herbalism at Hogwarts and is a close friend of the Potters and Weasleys. Joanne Rowling also announced that Neville will later marry Hannah Abbott , who has since taken over the " Leaky Cauldron ".

Cormac MacLaggen

Cormac MacLaggen is a tall and wiry-haired Gryffindor student who is a year older than Harry. He comes from an influential wizarding family and is extremely conceited and self-righteous. There are some arguments between him and Harry. In the sixth volume he wants to be the keeper in the selection of the Quidditch players for the home team and is outraged that Ron is selected instead of him, although Ron had held better. In the sixth volume, Cormac is a member of Professor Slughorn's "Slug Club" and makes advances to Hermione, which Hermione rejects. Among the Gryffindor students, Cormac is the only one of whom a rather negative character image is drawn in the novels.

Parvati Patil

Parvati Patil is in Harry's year and was assigned to House Gryffindor by the Sorting Hat , but her twin sister Padma to House Ravenclaw. Together with her best friend Lavender Brown , she is an enthusiastic supporter of the fortune telling teacher Sibyll Trelawney , whose words both take at face value. Parvati is invited by Harry as a dance partner to the Christmas ball on the occasion of the Triwizard Tournament , after his actual flame Cho Chang had already been given to Cedric Diggory . Harry doesn't turn out to be the ideal attendant at a ball. After ignoring Parvati, the gorgeous girl prefers to be courted by students from Beauxbatons Academy. In her fifth year of school, Parvati joins the DA along with her sister and friend Lavender and takes part in the seventh volume in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas is of the same year as Harry Potter, is also in Gryffindor and the son of a wizard and a muggle. His best friend is Seamus Finnigan . To the incomprehension of Seamus and Ron, Dean is a big football fan ( West Ham United ). He grew up in London with his mother and stepfather, as his birth father left the family when Dean was very young. He was a wizard, but he never told his wife to protect her. He was killed by Death Eaters for refusing to join them. Dean has several half brothers and sisters (taken from an interview with JK Rowling). He is from the end of his fifth to the beginning of his sixth year with Ginny Weasley dating , which sparked an argument between him and Ron. In the seventh volume Dean is pursued as "Mudblood" and finally caught, then locked in the dungeon of the Malfoy country house and finally saved by Dobby the house elf. He spends some time with Luna Lovegood with the Weasley family until he is called to the Hogwarts fight and takes part in it.

Fred and George Weasley

Fred (April 1, 1978 - May 2, 1998) and George Weasley (April 1, 1978), also known as the Weasley twins, are Ron's two years older brothers. Most of the time you have nothing but nonsense on your mind. This also matches her date of birth, April 1st, day of the pranks. On the Gryffindor Quidditch team, they're the drivers .

Even during their school days, the twins were selling self-made joke articles and forged plans to later open a shop for magical joke articles. When Dolores Umbridge takes over the post of director at Hogwarts, they finally drop out of school early in order to fulfill this dream. With their "exit" in the middle of their seventh year of school they outdid themselves once again by turning an entire corridor into a swamp, freeing their previously confiscated brooms from their chains with a summoning spell and then escaping the school. Shortly afterwards they open their shop for magical joke articles called Weasley's Magic Jokes (in the original "Weasley's Wizard Wheezes") in Diagon Alley , for which Harry provides his winnings in the Triwizard Tournament as seed capital. Fred and George's career is initially very displeasing to her mother , as she fervently hopes that their sons will follow in their father's footsteps and get a more lucrative job at the Ministry of Magic. It wasn't until the business proved very successful that she changed her mind. The success of the store proves that despite their constant jokes and silliness, Fred and George have great magical talent.

George loses an ear while escaping Little Whinging in Volume 7. When Voldemort later controls the wizarding world, the Weasleys are forced to go into hiding. In the underground station Potterwatch , Fred appears under the code name "Beißer" (English: "Rapier"). Finally, Fred dies in an explosion at the Battle of Hogwarts on May 2, 1998. George, Rowling has announced, will later name his first son Fred in memory of his brother. He also has a daughter named Roxanne. George is married to Angelina Johnson.

Ginny Weasley

Ginevra Molly Weasley (born August 11, 1981), called Ginny, is one year younger than Ron and the first girl in the Weasley family for generations. She is described as pretty, with long red hair, light brown eyes, and freckles. She's been in love with Harry since the first volume. Later on, Hermione advises her to be more of herself, as this is more likely to get Harry's attention.

In her first (Harry's second) year of school she is leaked the old diary of Tom Vorlost Riddle (Voldemort's “real” name) through Lucius Malfoy. As it turns out later, it was a Horcrux that housed part of Voldemort's soul. Since she unsuspectingly writes in the diary, Voldemort manages to take possession of her, reopen the "Chamber of Secrets" and kidnap Ginny there. She is saved by Harry at the end of Volume Two. In her fourth year she becomes a member of "Dumbledore's Army" ( DA ) and takes part in both the battle at the Ministry and the Battle of Hogwarts two years later. Ginny is a very talented witch and is invited to the "Slug Club" by Professor Slughorn in the sixth volume after a perfectly executed "batwing" spell.

In the fifth volume her character is more involved in the plot and she gets an active part in the main action. The reader learns that she has apparently given up her crush on Harry. This not only leads to her relationships with Michael Corner and Dean Thomas, but also to Ginny being able to make Harry a good friend. In the sixth volume she still meets Harry. Shortly thereafter, Harry ends the relationship for the time being in order not to endanger Ginny because of his task to destroy Voldemort. Ginny takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts even though she is still a minor.

In the epilogue of the seventh volume, the reader learns that she and Harry are getting married and, 19 years after the events, have three children, all of whom are educated at Hogwarts. Rowling also revealed in an interview that as an adult, Ginny first became a Quidditch player with the Holyhead Harpies (her favorite team) before working as a professional Quidditch commentator for the Daily Prophet .

Percy Weasley

Ron's brother Percival Ignatius Weasley is two years older than Fred and George and an even bigger nerd than Hermione . He is eager to obey all regulations, even if they contradict all common sense. From Harry's first year he is a prefect of Gryffindor, in the third then head boy. He is the boyfriend of Penelope Clearwater, who is a prefect of Ravenclaw in the second volume and is petrified by the basilisk. After finishing school, Percy got a position in the fourth volume in the Ministry of Magic , initially as secretary to Bartemius Crouch , and a year later as junior assistant to the minister. Since his parents are firmly committed to Dumbledore, Percy breaks off contact with them and even incites Ron in a letter to stop dealing with Harry and Dumbledore because the Ministry of Magic has declared both to be crazy and dangerous. Even after it became known that Harry and Dumbledore were right in everything they said, Percy is far from ready to make up with his family. Only in the seventh volume does he admit his mistake and make up with his family shortly before the start of the battle for Hogwarts.

More students

In addition to the Gryffindors already mentioned, other students of this house are mentioned in the books. Oliver Wood is the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team until his senior year at Hogwarts (Volume 3) and also the one who explains the game and its rules to Harry in the first volume. Angelina Johnson (also a Quidditch player) is a year younger than Wood and will succeed him as captain in Harry's fifth year. In the same year she joins the DA . She is the future wife of George Weasley. Another member of the DA is Alicia Spinnet from Gryffindor, who is also a player on the in-house Quidditch team and two years older than Harry.

Ravenclaws

Cho Chang

Cho Chang is a strikingly pretty girl. She is a year older than Harry and seeker in the Quidditch team of the house Ravenclaw . She is considered Harry's first love. In the third volume, Harry has great problems concentrating on his favorite game when Gryffindor plays Ravenclaw. She goes to the Christmas ball with Cedric Diggory because Harry asks her too late. During the fourth volume, she is in a relationship with Cedric. In the fifth volume, Harry gets his first kiss from her, and she is also his girlfriend for a short time. After a first (and only) date on Valentine's Day and subsequent “disagreements”, she separates from him. She later begins a relationship with Michael Corner, Ginny's ex-boyfriend, but apparently still has feelings for Harry. In the seventh volume, Cho returns to Hogwarts and takes part in the battle for Hogwarts. According to JK Rowling , she later marries a Muggle.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is a girl who is said to be not quite right in the head. She is teased by many students with the name "Loony" ("crazy", "foolish"). Her father Xenophilius Lovegood is editor-in-chief and publisher of the magazine Der Klitterer (in the original " The Quibbler "), which is known to contain only outrageous articles (often in the form of conspiracy theories ). Her mother died from an improper magic experiment when Luna was nine years old. Luna also has a reputation for firmly believing in things that have not been proven to exist. As a result, she has few friends during her first years at Hogwarts. Only the DA ("Dumbledore's Army") meetings give her the feeling of having friends. However, Luna is far more than the absent-minded and somewhat strange girl she appears to many to be. She is smart and notices more than most of the people around her. She is also abysmally honest, which is often uncomfortable for others, and values the few friendships that she has. In her room at home she drew pictures of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville on the ceiling and connected them with word chains ("friends").

Since she too lost a beloved family member through the death of her mother and therefore knows Harry's feelings after Sirius' death from personal experience, there is an understanding between Luna and Harry in this regard that he does not even have with Ron and Hermione. They also share the feeling of being untrustworthy and therefore outcast, since in the fifth volume Harry's credibility is questioned when he claims that Lord Voldemort has returned. In the sixth volume, Harry invites Luna to Professor Slughorn's Christmas party. Luna is also allowed to comment on a Quidditch game, which she does in her own way (that is, with a lot of side comments about things that are not related to the game, such as the weather). Luna, like Harry, can see the thestrals due to the death of her mother.

When the Death Eaters take over Hogwarts under Snape's leadership, Luna, along with Neville and Ginny, continue to lead Dumbledore's army. Eventually they try to steal Gryffindor's sword and are caught by Snape in the process. As a punishment, the three are sent to the Forbidden Forest, which - thanks to Hagrid's supervision - is more of a cozy evening. At the beginning of the Christmas holidays, Luna is kidnapped by Death Eaters in order to blackmail her father, change the direction of the quibbler , and give them information about Harry Potter. Together with Mr. Ollivander - later also Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dean Thomas and the goblin Griphook - she is held in the Malfoys' estate until Dobby rescues her. In the Battle of Hogwarts, Luna first leads Harry into the Ravenclaw common room to show him the replica of Rowena Ravenclaw's tiara (the last missing Horcrux) on her statue, and then she fights Bellatrix Lestrange alongside Hermione and Ginny . In a television interview, Rowling stated that Luna would become a naturalist after leaving school and meet with Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander (the fictional author of the book Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them , which - along with the Harry Potter novels) - Marketed by Scholastic Press in 2001 ).

Marietta Edgecombe

Marietta Edgecombe is Cho Chang's best friend and belongs to the Ravenclaw family. She joins "Dumbledore's Army" reluctantly and later betrays them to Dolores Umbridge by showing her the entrance to the Room of Requirement, where Harry secretly teaches the members of the DA in magic. Hermione Granger's magical securing of the membership list activates the curse that Marietta writes the word " Sneak " (in the original: sneak ) in the form of pustules across her face due to her betrayal .

More students

In addition to the Ravenclaws already mentioned, other students of this house are mentioned in the books. Padma Patil is the twin sister of Parvati Patil, who was assigned to the House of Gryffindor. In the fourth volume she accompanies Ron to the Christmas ball and joins Michael Corner , Terry Boot and Anthony Goldstein in the fifth volume of the DA . Michael Corner meets Ginny Weasley at Christmas Ball in Volume Four and is with her the following school year. Later he goes with Cho Chang. Anthony Goldstein is a distant relative of Porpentina Goldstein.

Hufflepuffs

Hannah Abbott

Hannah Abbott is in the same year as Harry and is a member of the Hufflepuff family. She is the only Hufflepuff student to be featured in every novel in the series. She has blonde hair which she usually wears in pigtails. Her best friends are Justin Finch-Fletchley and Ernie Macmillan, with whom she shares her hobby of collecting chocolate frog cards. Hannah protects Harry when in the second volume many of the other students claim he is the heir of Slytherin. During the Triwizard Tournament, she remains loyal to her Hufflepuff classmate Cedric Diggory when he competes against Harry in the tournament, but unlike many of her classmates, she still gets along well with Harry and his friends. She is promoted to prefect in Harry's fifth year. A little later she joins the DA ("Dumbledore's Army"). She is one of the students who defend Harry at the end of Volume 5 against Draco Malfoy , Crabbe and Goyle when they attack him on the Hogwarts Express. In the sixth volume, her mother is murdered by Death Eaters. Thereupon Hannah leaves Hogwarts and only returns in the seventh volume to support Harry in the fight for Hogwarts. She later married Neville Longbottom and owned the Leaky Cauldron .

Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory is a Seeker on the Hufflepuffs Quidditch team . He is known for his fair behavior in competitions. Cedric, who is three years older than Harry, is one of the main characters in the fourth volume in the series . At the beginning of the tape he attended the Quidditch World Cup in England with his father and Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys. In the same school year, he applies to be champion for Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament and is selected together with Harry. He meets up with Cho during the school year and goes to the Christmas ball with her.

In the final stage of the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric and Harry reach the winner's cup at the same time and decide to take it together. However, the trophy turns out to be a portkey that takes the two of them to a cemetery where Voldemort plans to attack Harry. Cedric dies there from Wormtail's curse " Avada Kedavra " on Lord Voldemort's orders. After Harry manages to escape from Voldemort, he also takes Cedric's body with him. Cedric's death traumatized Harry for a long time and is also the catalyst for his later ability to see the Thestrals .

More students

In addition to the Hufflepuffs already mentioned, other students of this house are mentioned in the books. Justin Finch-Fletchley , Zacharias Smith , Susan Bones and Ernie Macmillan join "Dumbledore's Army" in volume five.

Other schools of sorcery

In addition to Hogwarts, two other large wizarding schools in Europe are mentioned: Durmstrang University in northern Eastern Europe and the Beauxbatons Academy in France. In the fourth volume, both schools send their representatives to the " Triwizard Tournament " which takes place at Hogwarts.

Fleur Delacour

Fleur Isabelle Delacour is a student at the Beauxbatons Academy in southern France. She represents her school in the Triwizard Tournament . Fleur is a girl of almost supernatural beauty. Her grandmother was a veela . Ron invites her to the Christmas ball, but is rudely turned down and cannot get over this embarrassment for a long time. In the second task of the Triwizard Tournament Fleur has to save her little sister Gabrielle, but she does not succeed. Gabrielle is finally rescued from the lake by Harry, for which Fleur is very grateful. During her later work in the wizarding bank Gringotts , she meets Bill Weasley and falls in love with him. In the sixth volume, the two are a couple and are planning their wedding, which the other Weasleys, especially Molly , initially do not support. By Ginny Fleur called only pejorative "slime" (in English, is a distortion of Fleurs name, "Phlegm" used). After Bill's face is disfigured by Fenrir Greyback , she confirms that she will continue to marry him because she is beautiful enough for both of them. Fleur is recognized by the Weasleys and, in particular, defuses the ongoing conflict with her mother-in-law Molly. In the seventh volume she fights at the side of her husband Bill in the battle for Hogwarts. You have a daughter in the epilogue named Victoire who is in a relationship with Teddy Lupine, the son of Remus Lupine and Tonks . In retrospect it turns out that Fleur and Bill have two other children named Dominique and Louis. This can be seen on the family tree drawn by JK Rowlings, which was published on their homepage.

Viktor Krum

Viktor Krum is a popular Quidditch player from Bulgaria and a student of Durmstrang. At the age of 18 Viktor was accepted into the Bulgarian national Quidditch team. At the Quidditch World Cup, in the fourth volume, he performed the difficult Wronski bluff (a Quidditch move, named after the Polish seeker Josef Wronski) and earned Harry Potter's admiration with it - and later for his fair behavior in everyday life. Krum represents Durmstrang at the Triwizard Tournament . He and Hermione Granger grow closer this school year - to the annoyance of Ron Weasley and Igor Karkaroff , the headmaster of Durmstrang - and, to the surprise of all other Hogwarts students, go to the Christmas ball together. After Krum's departure, the two lead a pen friendship.

Krum is present as a guest at the wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley. During the celebration there is a dispute between him and Luna Lovegood's father, as he wears a symbol openly around his neck, which is understood as a sign of the evil wizard Grindelwald . As it turns out later, the symbol originally stands for the Deathly Hallows , although hardly any other magician believes in their true existence. Xenophilius Lovegood bears the mark because he is one of the few magicians who believe in the myth, as does Grindelwald, who once adopted the symbol and also owned one of the shrines, the elder wand, for a time.

Krum also shows interest in Ginny , which Harry (in a brief fit of jealousy) can quickly distract Harry.

Wizard families

The Blacks

The old Black family have sworn by the purity of their magician's blood for centuries under the motto “Toujours pure”. Her family residence is Grimmauldplatz 12 , which will later be converted into the headquarters of the Phoenix Order. Many other pureblood clans are related to the Blacks, including the Malfoys and Weasleys . A former Hogwarts Headmaster was a member of the Black family, Phineas Nigellus Black. With a few exceptions, the Black family is dedicated to black magic.

Several family members play a role in the Harry Potter novels:

The Dumbledores

From the Dumbledore family, only two people appear directly in the novels, the brothers Albus and Aberforth . Her father Percival, mother Kendra and sister Ariana are also mentioned as other family members. The latter, who as a child like all wizarding children had no control of her magic, was apparently mistreated by a gang of teenage Muggles after an incident , which left her with permanent mental damage. Father Percival, who took revenge on the evildoers, was imprisoned in Azkaban for this. Following this incident, the family moved to Godric's Hollow , where they befriended neighbor Bathilda Bagshot . The mentally unstable Ariana accidentally killed her mother in an uncontrolled attack of magic, whereupon Albus broke off his just beginning career to take over the care of the sister as head of the family. At the same time, the young magician Grindelwald , who later became famous as a powerful dark magician, also lived in Godric's Hollow. Albus and Grindelwald were close friends at the time. Ariana died in an argument between the Dumbledore brothers and Grindelwald, for which Aberforth Albus was responsible. But Albus also reproached himself for a lifetime, as his dreams in the sixth volume prove. At the end of the seventh volume, Aberforth, who had meanwhile become the innkeeper at Boar's Head in Hogsmeade , still plays an important role in the Battle of Hogwarts .

The Gaunts

The Gaunts were the last direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin and the middle of the three Peverell brothers, Cadmus, to whom the legend of the Deathly Hallows goes back. One of the sanctuaries, the Ring with the Resurrection Stone, is a Gaunts family heirloom and once belonged to Cadmus Peverell. Vorlost Gaunt lived impoverished and withdrawn with his children Morfin and Merope in a small hut on the outskirts of the village of Little Hangleton . The overall impression of the Gaunts is that of a backward family of backwoodsmen. This also contributes to Dumbledore's statement that they have a habit of marrying their own cousins in order to keep their family pure-blood. The last descendant of the Gaunt family is Merope's son Tom Vorlost Riddle ( Lord Voldemort ). Salazar Slytherin's medallion is owned by the Gaunt family and is later made into a horcrux by Voldemort . Since the Gaunts, like the Potters, are descendants of the Peverell brothers, there is a distant relationship between Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter.

Vorlost Gaunt (in the original "Marvolo Gaunt") was considered by the residents of Little Hangleton, as far as known, as a rough and arrogant tramp who avoided all contact due to his aversion to Muggles. Merope Gaunt, Vorlost's daughter, was least valued by her father, led a kind of Cinderella existence in the kitchen of the house and was gutted at every opportunity. She wasn't very attractive and was cross-eyed. Morfin Gaunt was apparently a little mentally retarded, preferred to speak Parseltongue and even surpassed his father in brutality, especially towards Muggles. After an attack on Tom Riddle Sr. , whom Morfin had long watched as his sister Merope's secret crush, he was sentenced to three years in prison in Azkaban . His father was also detained for six months for resisting Ministry officials. When he returned, he found the house abandoned and died not long after.

Merope had meanwhile succeeded in getting Tom Riddle Sr. to win with the help of a love potion. The two ran away together and Merope became pregnant. But when Tom discovered her secret, he left her. She finally gave birth to her son in a London orphanage, to whom she was able to name Tom and Vorlost (in the original "Marvolo") before she died. Morfin was later visited by Tom Vorlost Riddle, about sixteen years old, who wanted to find out everything about his origins from him. Tom Riddle then murdered the entire Riddle family using Morfin's wand. He cast a spell on his uncle that made him proudly proclaim that he had committed the murders. The case was thus resolved in the magical world, and Morfin came back to Azkaban. Before his death, Dumbledore went to see him there to get the memory of his encounter with Voldemort. But before the Ministry of Magic could recognize his innocence, Morfin died and was buried next to Azkaban.

Marvolo Gaunt's first name is in the German translation "Vorlost", so that the anagram does not lose its meaning from which Tom Vorlost Riddle derived his new name "Lord Voldemort" (Tom Vorlost Riddle = "is Lord Voldemort"). However, this eliminates the fact that the names of all family members begin with an "M".

The longbottoms

Six members of the Longbottom family are mentioned in the books. In addition to Neville and his grandmother Augusta Longbottom, there are also Neville's parents, Frank and Alice , who are long-term patients in St. Mungo's Hospital , as they were tortured to the point of madness by Death Eaters , including Bellatrix Lestrange in particular. Neville's great-uncle Algie and great-aunt Enid are also mentioned. The Longbottoms are pure blood and huge supporters of Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter.

The Malfoys

The Malfoy family consists of Lucius Malfoy , Narcissa Malfoy (née Black) and Draco Malfoy . Draco is the only child of Lucius and Narcissa. Narcissa Malfoy is the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks, with Narcissa being the youngest of the three. She is described as slim, tall, blonde and very arrogant. Narcissa is never specifically referred to as a Death Eater , but her marriage to Lucius Malfoy, the connection to Sister Bellatrix, and the presence on the part of the Death Eaters at the Battle of Hogwarts suggest that she belongs at least to the wider circle of Death Eaters. The Malfoys host Lord Voldemort in their estate at the beginning of the seventh volume . At this point they have already fallen out of favor with him after Lucius spoiled Voldemort's chance to hear the prophecy from the Ministry of Magic in Volume 5. However, all of their attempts to rise again in his favor do not lead to success. At the beginning of the sixth volume, Narcissa takes the Unbreakable Oath with Severus Snape to protect her son , who is supposed to help Draco with all the tasks assigned to him by Lord Voldemort. Narcissa rightly fears that Voldemort's main aim is to punish the overwhelmed Draco after his foreseeable failure.

At the end of the seventh volume, the mother's love drives Narcissa to the point of open betrayal of the Dark Lord : She is supposed to check for him whether Harry, who has just been hit by Voldemort's killing curse, is really dead. She notices that he is alive and asks him quietly if her son survived the battle for Hogwarts. When Harry replies in the affirmative, she assures Voldemort that he is dead and thereby helps him to escape unscathed later. Draco's parents no longer participate in the decisive battle for Hogwarts, but leave the scene with him. According to JK Rowling, the entire family escaped trial and imprisonment for helping Lord Voldemort while he was alive, citing their contribution to Harry's rescue. In the epilogue , Draco has a son named Scorpius.

The Potters

The Potter family includes James , Lily (née Evans), Harry and in the epilogue of the seventh volume also Ginny Weasley , who bears the surname Potter after her marriage to Harry, and their children James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna. The Potters' home in Godric's Hollow was destroyed by Lord Voldemort on October 31, 1981 . It is not known where Harry lives as an adult. From a remark at the end of the seventh volume one can conclude that his house has four rooms ( Grimmauldplatz 12 has considerably more. Five of them are mentioned in the novels).

The Weasleys

Arthur (born February 6, 1950) and Molly Weasley (born October 30, 1949) are the parents of a total of seven children: Bill , Charlie , Percy , Fred, George , Ron and Ginny . After her marriage to Ron, Hermione Granger can also be counted as a member of the family, as can Bill's wife Fleur and George's wife Angelina Johnson. In the seventh volume, the obnoxious great-aunt Muriel also has a small appearance. The Weasleys live in the Burrow . The distinctive feature of the Weasleys is their red hair. They are also known for their poverty. Nevertheless, they always give Harry and Hermione a warm welcome, so Harry is regularly invited to the Burrow during the holidays. The Weasleys are the healing - and often also healing - element for Harry, the family he never had and which he longs for. Often times, Harry finds it hard to cope with the fact that he is putting the Weasleys in danger simply because they are close to him.

Last but not least, the Weasleys, together with the Longbottoms, are the contrapart to the also pure-blood families Malfoy, Lestrange and Black and should show that nothing in the world is just black or white.

Members of the Order of the Phoenix

The "Order of the Phoenix" is an association founded by Albus Dumbledore to fight against Voldemort's reign of terror. The order came into being when Voldemort first wanted to rule. After his fall, the order dissolved and is brought back to life by Dumbledore after Voldemort's return at the end of volume four. The headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix is located in Grimmauldplatz 12 during Volume 5 , after Dumbledore's death in Volume 6 it will be temporarily moved to the Burrow . Only people who are of legal age (17 years old) and have already finished school are accepted as members of the order.

Sirius Black

Sirius Black (referred to as Sirius Schwarz in earlier translations of the first volume ) was James Potter's best friend, best man at his wedding to Lily and Harry's godfather. During his school days he was close friends with James, Remus Lupine and Peter Pettigrew . The four formed the Marauders. Friendship with Remus, who is a werewolf, became the other three Animagi . Sirius transforms into a big, shaggy, black dog. Hence its nickname "paw" comes from. Sirius was very popular in school, is extraordinarily smart, and was known along with James for his pranks. He ran away from home at the age of 16 and lived with James' family for a while. Sirius spends 12 years innocent in Azkaban on charges of betraying Lily and James Potter to Voldemort and murdering Peter Pettigrew and twelve innocent Muggles on the street. In the third volume, he is the first wizard to escape from the wizard's prison and to prove his innocence to Harry. After that, despite his ongoing flight from the Ministry of Magic, they remain in constant contact; for Harry Sirius becomes a kind of surrogate father and brother at the same time. In the fifth volume, Sirius dies during a fight with his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange . Harry inherits the house at Grimmauldplatz 12 from him, including the house-elf Kreacher .

Elphias Doge

Elphias Doge is an elderly gentleman and a member of the Order of the Phoenix, who appears for the first time in the fifth volume. He is the oldest friend of Albus Dumbledore and went to school with him. Shortly after Dumbledore's death, Doge writes a passionate obituary for Dumbledore in the Daily Prophet and takes on Rita Skeeter , who wants to publish a scandalous biography about Dumbledore at the same time. At Bill Weasley's wedding at the beginning of Volume 7, Doge, in the presence of Harry, has a lengthy argument with Aunt Muriel , who believes Skeeter's allegations about Dumbledore, which cast the deceased in a bad light.

Aberforth Dumbledore

Aberforth has been a member of the Phoenix Order since it was founded by his brother. In his youth, Aberforth raised goats. Aberforth was also convicted of improper magic in connection with this breed, but the newspaper reports about it have not impressed Aberforth, Albus says, although he claims not to know whether Aberforth can read. As the host of the Boar's Head , an inn in Hogsmeade , Aberforth can appear for the Order and his brother. Aberforth discovers Severus Snape while eavesdropping on the prophecy about the possible downfall of Lord Voldemort, preventing Snape from hearing the whole prophecy ( Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ).

In the seventh volume, Aberforth saves Harry and his friends twice the lives by sending the house-elf Dobby to help them in an emergency and hiding them from the Death Eaters in Hogsmeade . He first helps Neville Longbottom and his friends fight Voldemort's governor at Hogwarts. Later, with Aberforth's help, Harry arrives at school to face Voldemort in the final fight. Aberforth is responsible for evacuating the younger students from the school during the Battle of Hogwarts. In the end he took part in the battle himself.

Arabella Figg

Arabella Doreen Figg (Mrs. Figg) is a neighbor of the Dursleys who, in Harry's younger years, often looked after him when the Dursleys were away. No one would have ever thought she was anything but an ordinary Muggle . This changes suddenly at the beginning of the fifth volume , when she is revealed as Squib and undercover employee of the Phoenix Order as well as Harry's secret guard. Mrs. Figg breeds knees.

Mundungus Fletcher

Mundungus Fletcher is an unreliable crook and cheat, but works for the "Order of the Phoenix" in return for a favor to Dumbledore. Sirius says Mundungus is very useful to the Order as he knows every crook in Britain. His unreliability is expressed, for example, by the fact that in the fifth volume he neglects his guard duty in front of the Dursleys' house , which enables the Dementors to attack Harry. In the seventh volume he makes himself responsible for "Mad-Eye" Moody's death when he leaves him in the fight against the attacking Death Eaters during Harry's transfer to the Tonks' house and cowardly takes flight. After Harry learns from Kreacher that Mundungus has stolen the Slytherin locket from the house of the Blacks, among other things, Kreacher makes a final appearance and is asked by Harry, Ron and Hermione about the location of the locket.

Alice and Frank Longbottom

Neville's parents, Frank and Alice, are long-term patients at St Mungo's Hospital , as they were tortured into insanity by Death Eaters shortly after Neville's birth . In the fifth volume, Harry and his friends meet them as they look around the hospital. This difficult fate of his parents could be a reason why Neville initially acts very insecure and idiotic about everything he does. Before the attack, Frank and Alice Longbottom were very good Aurors, bringing many of the cruelest Death Eaters to Azkaban . Since the first part of the prophecy could also have applied to Neville, his parents must have escaped Voldemort several times. In the fourth volume, Harry Potter observes through Albus Dumbledore's Pensieve the trial in which the Death Eaters who tortured the Longbottoms are convicted.

Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody

Moody was the best auror in the Ministry of Magic in his day, spent half his life hunting black magicians and obsessing over conspiracies. But since he was often unable to prove that dark forces were at work, his credibility is pretty weak. He has lost a leg, a piece of his nose and one of his eyes in a fight and instead wears a magical prosthesis. With this magical, deep blue eye he can see backwards (also through his own head), through objects and even under invisibility cloaks. Dumbledore hires Moody as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher before the start of fourth grade . But before Moody can start his job, Barty Crouch jr. attacked at home and placed under the " Imperius " curse. Using the " Polyjuice " -Trankes to Crouch turned into his victim and takes place him for the position of teachers. Meanwhile he locks the real Moody in a magical trunk, from which Moody is freed by Dumbledore at the end of the school year. During the summer vacation, Harry meets the real Alastor Moody, who is even more terrifying because of his imprisonment than the one Crouch played all through fourth grade. In the fifth volume you learn that Moody is a member of the "Order of the Phoenix" and that he fought against Voldemort in the first war. At the beginning of the seventh book, Moody is killed while evacuating Harry Potter from Voldemort Privet Drive.

James Potter

James Potter (born March 27, 1960 † October 31, 1981) is the father of Harry Potter . He was killed by Lord Voldemort when Harry was 15 months old. Before his death, James was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. As a teenager he was close friends with Remus Lupine (called "Moony"), Sirius Black (called "Padfoot") and Peter Pettigrew (called "Wormtail"). Just like Sirius and Peter, James was an unregistered Animagus so they could spend the full moon nights with the werewolf Remus. James could transform himself into a deer, hence his nickname "Crown" (in the original "Prongs"). As it turns out in the third volume, Harry's Patronus is also a stag. James was a hunter and head boy in school. James had a great dislike of Severus Snape , who was at the same time a student at Hogwarts, and openly displayed this through arrogance and arrogance. However, he saved Snape's life after Sirius had put him in danger beforehand. After high school, he married Lily Evans , whom he had met at Hogwarts and with whom he was named head boy in senior year.

Lily Potter

Lily Potter (née Evans) (born January 30, 1960 † October 31, 1981) is the mother of Harry Potter, to whom he owes his green eyes. Her parents were Muggles, which is why Severus Snape called her "Mudblood" at least once in school . She was killed by Lord Voldemort along with her husband James when Harry was 15 months old. It is said that the only reason Voldemort couldn't kill Harry was because his mother sacrificed herself for him out of love. Lily was also formerly a member of the Phoenix Order. She was the sister of Petunia Dursley . Before she even knew about Hogwarts, she was friends with Severus Snape. During her fifth year at Hogwarts, Lily tried to dissuade the then loathed James from his "jokes" about Snape. As it turns out in the seventh volume, Snape was in love with her until his own death (17 years after Lily's death). Rowling confirmed in an interview that Lily also had feelings for Snape. In her fifth year, Lily was named prefect with Remus Lupine, and in seventh year she was named head girl with James Potter. As her former Potions teacher Horace Slughorn relates in Volume 6, Lily was exceptionally gifted at brewing potions.

Nymphadora Tonks

Tonks, as she prefers to be called, is the daughter of Andromeda Tonks (née Black) and Muggle-born Ted Tonks. Her mother's origins make her the niece of Narcissa Malfoy as well as Bellatrix Lestrange and Sirius' second cousin. As a Metamorphmagus , she is able to change her appearance (e.g. her hair color or her nose shape) almost at will through her will. Tonks is a member of the Phoenix Order and an Auror. During her school days at Hogwarts, she was assigned to the Hufflepuff house . She completed her training to become an auror in Harry's fourth year. She falls in love with Remus Lupine . They get married in the seventh volume and have a son, Teddy (Ted) Remus Lupine, whose godfather Harry becomes. Tonks is killed along with Remus during the Battle of Hogwarts. Her killer is Bellatrix Lestrange, as JK Rowling later announced in an interview.

Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley is the head of the Weasley family. He is related to the pureblood Black family over a few corners . In the course of his work, he has developed a particular interest in objects that are used by non-magical people, especially electrical devices. To the horror of his wife, he has a huge collection of plugs and batteries, and his greatest wish is "to find out how airplanes stay in the air". For these reasons, he is particularly interested in Harry and Hermione, who grew up among Muggles, as they can provide him with a lot of information about the Muggle world. He and his wife Molly treat Harry like their own child.

Arthur has a small, cramped office, very low income, and it is said that under Cornelius Fudge, his Muggle-friendly demeanor prevented his professional advancement. He works in the Department of Muggle Artifact Abuse . Under the new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour , to the great delight of his wife Molly and the whole family, he is promoted to head of the Bureau for the Investigation and Seizure of Counterfeit Defense Charms and Protective Items. Arthur is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix and has rendered some useful services to them as a member of the Ministry. He is almost killed on a mission in the fifth volume. Arthur takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts with his entire family. In an interview, Rowling stated that Arthur Weasley was originally not supposed to survive the attack by Voldemort's serpent Nagini in Volume 5 . Instead, in the seventh volume, she let Remus Lupine , another father, die.

Bill Weasley

William "Bill" Arthur Weasley is the eldest Weasley son, two years older than Charlie. At Hogwarts he was a prefect and head boy. For a while he worked for the wizarding bank Gringotts as a curse breaker in Egypt . However, he gives up this position in the fifth volume and takes a desk job at Gringotts in order to better support the Order of the Phoenix. During the fight in the astronomy tower in volume six , he is bitten by Fenrir Greyback and thus disfigured. But since there was no full moon and Greyback was not acting in his werewolf form at this point in time, the attack left no psychological consequences, except for a preference for bloody meat. He wears a snake tooth as an earring and has long red hair that his mother would love to shorten. Fleur Delacour takes a liking to him, the two become a couple and marry in the seventh volume. After the wedding, Bill and Fleur live in their Shell Cottage on the coast, in which Harry also stays from time to time and in the vicinity of which he buries the dead house elf Dobby . Bill fights alongside his wife Fleur in the Battle of Hogwarts . They have three children named Victoire (who has a relationship with Teddy Lupine in the epilogue), Dominique, and Louis Weasley.

Charlie Weasley

Charlie Weasley is three years older than Percy. He is described in the books as very vigorous. Like his brother Bill, Charlie graduated from Hogwarts and works in a dragon reserve in Romania . Because of his work he has many callosities on his hands. Charlie was an extremely talented Quidditch player. If he hadn't followed his love for dragons, he could have become England's national team. Like Harry, he is a seeker . In the fifth volume, Charlie joins the Order of the Phoenix. Like his whole family, he also takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts .

Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley b. Prewett is the wife of Arthur Weasley and the mother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny Weasley. Her brothers Fabian and Gideon Prewett are also among Voldemort's victims, as can be seen in the fourth chapter of " Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone ". Molly gives Harry the watch from the former for his seventeenth birthday. She is a good-natured woman who also regards Harry as her son. Her main concern is the safety of her family. She is also a member of the Phoenix Order, as are half of her family. She would like all of her children to get a secure job in the ministry . At the beginning, she can't get anything from the twins ' plan to open a joke shop in Diagon Alley . Only when she sees how successful the two are, does she come to terms with it.

Molly doesn't like much of her husband Arthur's passion for Muggle and everything to do with them, although she has nothing against Muggle-born wizards. However, she makes it clear that, like many other wizards, she feels a certain dislike, if not superiority, towards non-magical people. Despite her otherwise very warm, amiable manner, she occasionally tends to outbursts of anger. In the final battle for Hogwarts, Bellatrix Lestrange attacks her daughter Ginny. Then Molly rushes furiously on the Death Eater and kills her.

Other members

Other members of the Phoenix Order are Remus Lupine , Kingsley Shacklebolt , Severus Snape , Minerva McGonagall , Rubeus Hagrid and, as the secret keeper of the headquarters and founder of the Order, something like its leader, Albus Dumbledore . Members with minor appearances in the book include Sturgis Podmore , Daedalus Diggel , Emmeline Vance, and Hestia Jones .

Enemies

Lord Voldemort

Tom Vorlost Riddle (born December 31, 1926 - May 2, 1998), known as Lord Voldemort, is the dark antagonist of the main character Harry Potter and the greatest black magician of his time. He is the son of Mughal Tom Riddle and the Slytherin descendant Merope Gaunt . It got its second name "Vorlost" (in the English original Marvolo ) after his grandfather Vorlost Gaunt . The name change was made in order to be able to form a suitable anagram in German (English: Tom Marvolo Riddle = I am Lord Voldemort ; German: Tom Vorlost Riddle = Ist Lord Voldemort ). Tom Riddle's heavily pregnant mother was abandoned by his father before he was born. Merope Gaunt died in his birth, which is why he grew up in an orphanage until Albus Dumbledore brought him to Hogwarts at the age of eleven. Like his ancestors on his mother's side, he is a Parseltongue , so he can talk to snakes.

In his youthful, human form, he is described as handsome, dark-haired and pale and thus very similar to his father. Dumbledore noticed early on that Tom Riddle had a tendency to view himself as special and extraordinary and to manipulate, dominate and torment others when they resisted him. During his school days, Riddle strove to find out more about his origins. He managed to locate his neglected uncle Morfin , his mother's brother, in Little Hangleton and to extract information from him about his parents' past. Then Riddle probably put a shock spell on his uncle , stole the ring with the Peverell crest and his wand and thus killed his father Tom Riddle Senior and his parents. He brought the wand back and probably put another curse on Morfin, which falsely made him confess to the murders of the Riddles, for which he was imprisoned in Azkaban until his death .

Out of hatred of his non-magical father and because he considered the name "Tom" too common, he adopted the new name Lord Voldemort in his youth , under which he pursued the goal of overcoming death and becoming immortal . He tried this as the first known wizard with several horcruxes , for which he u. a. obtained information from his teacher Horace Slughorn . In his urge to be special, he spent half his life looking for things that were in some way related to the founders of Hogwarts and therefore unique. He came into possession of Salazar Slytherin's medallion, which had once belonged to his mother, and a drinking goblet from Helga Hufflepuff . With unimaginable losses for his soul and humanity, he managed to split his soul and secure it in six strong, spell-protected containers (see list of Horcruxes ). At the age of 16 he also managed to open the Chamber of Secrets as the “heir of Slytherin” . After killing a student (the Moaning Myrtle ), the basilisk falsely presented the acromantula of Hagrid as the culprit and received the Hogwarts Award for Special Service .

Voldemort left Hogwarts as one of the most successful Slytherin graduates and applied for the position of Teacher in Defense Against the Dark Arts but was rejected twice (once from Headmaster Dippet, once from Dumbledore). He then allegedly cursed the position so that no teacher can teach the subject for more than a year. In the seventh volume it turns out that when Voldemort applied for the teaching position the second time, he just wanted to hide Rowena Ravenclaw's tiara in the Room of Requirement , which he believed only he knew existed. In the struggle for control of the wizarding and muggle world, Voldemort gathers his followers, the Death Eaters , around himself and begins to kill his opponents among the wizards. This also includes everyone who (could) get in his way in any way. To fight him united, Dumbledore founds the Order of the Phoenix , which the Potters and Alice and Frank Longbottom also join.

After his (at the time loyal) follower Severus Snape overhears part of the prophecy that Sibyll Trelawney makes to Dumbledore and reports it to Voldemort, he is certain that it is the son of James and Lily Potter because he is like he is a half-breed himself . When he visits the Potters' house that night and the killing curse on Harry for the sacrifice of his mother falls back on Voldemort, part of his soul and abilities are transferred to Harry. In doing so, he unwittingly created a seventh Horcrux and laid the foundation for a special bond between the two of them. An interaction also takes place with the wands of the opponents, since these have tail feathers of the same phoenix as their magical core. Voldemort himself is robbed of his power and his body and then disappears from the picture for many years.

In Harry Potter's first year of school, Voldemort tries to use the Philosopher's Stone to regain his physical form, but fails and retreats into the forests of Albania . There he is tracked down two years later (between volumes 3 and 4) as a weak, stunted figure by his henchman Peter Pettigrew and taken to the Riddles mansion in Little Hangleton, where he plans to return. In the fourth volume ( Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ) Voldemort manages to regain his body with the involuntary help of Harry through his blood, the bones of his father and a hand donated by his servant. Since Harry escapes him one more time in the following fight, he rebuilds his reign of terror from the underground with the primary goal of killing Harry. To this end, he frees many of his former Death Eaters from Azkaban, has unpleasant people murdered or people who could be of use to him kidnapped, and goes in search of the elder wand , with whose help he hopes for further superiority. In the seventh volume, when Voldemort tries again to kill Harry, himself destroys his soul part in Harry and thus also the accidentally created Horcrux. In the final duel, Voldemort casts the killing curse one last time on Harry, who falls back on him and finally kills him. Voldemort cannot feel the destruction of the other Horcruxes due to the mental mutilations they suffered (although this is portrayed in the film version), nor is he able to return as a ghost after his death, according to JK Rowling.

Most wizards shy away from pronouncing Voldemort's name. Even in the magician newspaper Der Tagesprophet he is only referred to as "You-know-who-who" or "The one whose name may not be named" (in the original You Know Who or He Who Must Not Be Named ), more rarely with "darker "Or" black lord "(in the original Dark Lord ), this term is used by the Death Eaters . Few wizards use Voldemort by name, including Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore , Sirius Black , Remus Lupine and later Hermione Granger . Professor Dumbledore addresses Voldemort by his original first name, Tom . Harry also addresses Voldemort by his real name "Riddle" during their conversation before the final duel. Voldemort is two years older than Hagrid .

Death eater

The followers of Voldemort are called "Death Eaters" (in the English original "Death Eaters"). They include u. a. Lucius Malfoy, Peter Pettigrew, Walden Macnair and the fathers of Crabbe, Avery, Goyle and Nott and many of the Blacks (Bellatrix, Regulus), as well as Antonin Dolohow, Augustus Rookwood, Igor Karkaroff , Severus Snape , Corban Yaxley and many more. While some Death Eaters were sentenced to life imprisonment following the Voldemort fall, others were left at large for lack of evidence, in part because they claimed that Voldemort had bewitched them to follow him. Characteristic of the Death Eaters is their always the same appearance: always in groups, wrapped in a black cloak and the face hidden by a silver mask. The closest circle of Voldemort is marked with the dark mark, Voldemort's symbol, a skull burned into the left arm, from whose mouth a snake gushes. According to JK Rowling, after Voldemort's death, the Dark Mark will fade and eventually scar. Like Harry's scar, it doesn't burn anymore.

In the sixth volume, Harry believes that Draco Malfoy , his archenemy at Hogwarts, was also accepted into the ranks of the Death Eaters.

Regulus Arcturus Black

Sirius Black's brother joined the Death Eaters after leaving school (House Slytherin). But he turned away from them after Voldemort had abused his house-elf Kreacher to hide one of his Horcruxes (Slytherin's locket). Then he drove back alone and left Kreacher to his fate. Since the elf had been instructed by Regulus to return home, he Disapparated back to Grimmauld Place 12 and reported to Regulus what had happened. With the help of Kreacher, Regulus retrieved the Horcrux from Voldemort's hiding place and exchanged it for a copy. He made the elf promise not to tell anyone about it. Regulus himself finished the potion and was drawn into the lake by the Inferi . He left the original locket in Kreacher's care and gave him the task of destroying it, which Kreacher was unable to do. In the false medallion that Harry and Dumbledore find at the end of volume six in a cave by the sea, Harry discovers a note with the initials "RAB" stating that the author had stolen the real Horcrux and would destroy it for the Dark Lord to be mortal again when he meets his conqueror. The locket finally came into the possession of Dolores Umbridge through Mundungus Fletcher , and Harry and Hermione can find it in the seventh volume.

Amycus and Alecto Carrow

Amycus and Alecto Carrow are a sibling who is loyal to Lord Voldemort . You are there when Albus Dumbledore is killed by Severus Snape in Volume 6 . In the seventh volume, the two are used by Voldemort as teachers at Hogwarts. Alecto takes over as a Muggle Studies teacher and spreads rumors about non- magical beings. Amycus forces his Defense Against the Dark Arts students to torture their own classmates with the Cruciatus Curse. The siblings are incapacitated by Harry Potter , Luna Lovegood and Minerva McGonagall shortly before the Battle of Hogwarts .

Barty crouch jr.

Bartemius Crouch junior is the son of Bartemius Crouch senior and, according to his own statements, the most loyal servant of Voldemort . He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban for torturing Alice and Frank Longbottom along with Bellatrix Lestrange, her husband Rodolphus and his brother Rabastan. The last wish of his terminally ill mother was that he should live in freedom, and so she persuaded his father to make an exchange. Barty Crouch Jr. transformed himself while visiting his parents in Azkaban. with the help of the “polyjuice” potion in his mother, the latter in reverse in him. The Dementors did not notice the exchange and so his father smuggled him out of prison, while his mother died there a little later. Back home, Barty Crouch Sr. his son docile with the help of the "Imperius" curse and hid him under an invisibility cloak. After a while, his son managed to fight the "Imperius" curse. During the Quidditch World Cup, he finally manages to escape. He conjures up the dark mark in the night sky with Harry's wand and spreads fear and terror.

When Voldemort comes to the Crouch family home through information from Bertha Jorkins, he overpowers Crouch Sr. and gives his son the order to go to Hogwarts as Alastor Moody to bring Harry Potter through the Triwizard Tournament . Crouch jr. this in his house and turns into Moody with the "Polyjuice" drink. After Potter has completed all tasks with Crouch's help and returns from his encounter with the Dark Lord in the cemetery, the supposed "Mad-Eye" kidnaps Harry, but is overpowered by Dumbledore a little later. Under the influence of "Veritaserum" Barty Crouch Jr. admits that he killed his father when he was fighting the curse of Voldemort and had fled. Albus Dumbledore elicits an extensive confession from him using Veritaserum. But the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, sees his safety endangered when he learns that the Death Eater who was responsible for the deeds that evening has been captured. Fudge brings a dementor to school called Barty Crouch Jr. then "kisses" and sucks its soul.

Fenrir Greyback

Fenrir Greyback is the werewolf who bit Remus Lupine as a little boy. His self-imposed goal is to turn as many people as possible into werewolves. Greyback is particularly fond of biting children with the intention of raising them afterwards and hating them for normal wizards. In contrast to other werewolves, he plans his attacks in a targeted manner. He works for Lord Voldemort and persuades the other werewolves that they would be better off under his rule. In the sixth volume, Remus Lupine is sent to the werewolves as a spy on behalf of Dumbledore . He is supposed to try to counter the promises made by Fenrir Greyback, which he says will be very difficult as long as Greyback is alive. In the sixth volume, Greyback is used as a kind of mercenary for the Death Eaters to control the work of the owner of "Borgin and Burkes" when he is commissioned to repair a vanity cabinet with which the Death Eaters can enter Hogwarts without permission a little later. In the same volume, Bill Weasley is attacked and injured in human form by Fenrir Greyback. In addition to his facial scars, Bill gains a fondness for bloody steaks, which his fiancée Fleur welcomes given her reservations about English cuisine .

In the seventh volume, Greyback searches the country for unwanted people on Lord Voldemort's behalf. As part of this mission, he meets Harry and his friends and brings them to the Malfoys estate. There his bloodthirstiness is shown, as he is eager to tear the " mudblood " Hermione Granger apart. In the Battle of Hogwarts, Fenrir Greyback attacks Lavender Brown , but is stopped by a curse from Hermione and Professor Trelawney , who throws a crystal ball at his head. The werewolf is finally completely incapacitated by Neville Longbottom and Ron Weasley.

Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange was born Black, the sister of Narcissa Malfoy and Andromeda Tonks, and the cousin of Sirius Black. She describes herself as the Dark Lord's most loyal servant . Until the fifth volume, she is serving a life sentence in the wizarding prison of Azkaban for torturing Neville Longbottom's parents, who have since been permanently treated in a wizarding hospital. In the fifth volume, Bellatrix breaks out of prison with other Death Eaters and a little later kills her cousin Sirius during their fight in the Department of Mysteries of the Ministry of Magic . In the sixth volume, she accompanies her sister Narcissa to Snape's house when she asks him for help for her son Draco. In the seventh volume, Bellatrix tortures Hermione to find out from her whether she and her friends broke into their dungeon in Gringotts, where one of Voldemort's Horcruxes and the sword of Gryffindor were hidden. She is responsible for the death of the house-elf Dobby . During the Battle of Hogwarts, she is killed by Molly Weasley after attacking her daughter Ginny . She is also the killer of Nymphadora Tonks , as Joanne K. Rowling announced in live chat on July 30, 2007.

Walden Macnair

Walden Macnair is a rough-hewn Death Eater who works as an executioner for the Department of Wizardry, as his adherence to Voldemort has never been proven. Him the job is assigned to Hagrid's hippogriff to execute Buckbeak. After Voldemort returns, he is involved in the battle for the prophecy. At the Battle of Hogwarts, Hagrid incapacitates him.

Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy is Draco's father and a staunch supporter of Voldemort. Like him, Malfoy is a former Slytherin student at Hogwarts. It appears for the first time in the second volume, where he manages to slip the diary of Tom Riddle, later Lord Voldemort, to Ginny Weasley . As it turns out later, this is one of Voldemort's Horcruxes . His house elf Dobby tries to keep Harry Potter away from Hogwarts, is later set free by a ruse by Harry and turns against his former master. Malfoy regularly tries to have Dumbledore deposed as headmaster through bribes and intrigues, but only achieves that he loses his position as headmaster. In the fifth volume, Harry witnesses how the Minister of Magic Fudge is apparently bribed by Lucius Malfoy. Later he tries with some Death Eaters to wrest the prophecy about the common fate of Lord Voldemort and Harry from Harry in the Hall of Prophecies in the Ministry of Magic , but fails. Due to his dark machinations, Malfoy finally ends up in Azkaban, is freed by Voldemort, but has no pleasure in it: In the last volume it becomes clear that the Malfoys have sunk in their standing with Voldemort and Lucius on the one hand through torture and futile efforts to regain his reputation increase, on the other hand is worn out. When Voldemort finally falls, Malfoy doesn't seem to care; he does not take part in the last battle for Hogwarts, but desperately searches with his wife for his son.

Lucius met his future confidante and fellow Death Eater, Severus Snape, in his final (Snape's first) year at Hogwarts. Malfoy was a House Slytherin Prefect that year.

Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew alias "Wormtail" (in the original "Wormtail"), so named because of its ability as an animagus to transform into a rat. Pettigrew was James and Lily Potter's keeper and betrayed them to Voldemort. Sirius Black wanted to kill Pettigrew after the Potters died, but Pettigrew turned into a rat and fled. He faked his own death by leaving a finger behind which was the largest piece of the allegedly dead Pettigrew that the Ministry wizards could find. In doing so, he portrayed Sirius as himself and the murderer of innocent Muggles whom he had actually killed. After his disappearance, Pettigrew lived in the form of a rat as a pet of the Weasleys for twelve years and was last owned by Ron. That Pettigrew was not killed and was the traitor to the Potters becomes known in Harry's third school year, at the end of which he is able to escape and return to Voldemort. In the fourth volume he helps Voldemort to get a new body and sacrifices his right hand for it. Using an unknown spell, Voldemort replaces the hand, which from then on has a shimmering silver coating. In the seventh volume he is strangled by the silver hand after hesitating in a brief moment of weakness - out of gratitude that Harry had once saved him - to kill Harry.

Yaxley

Corban Yaxley (his first name was posted on Pottermore) is a follower of the Dark Lord who managed to put the Imperius Curse on a senior Ministry worker . After taking over the ministry, together with Dolores Umbridge and Mafalda Hopfkirch, he is responsible for interrogating magicians according to the purity of their blood and condemning them accordingly. Yaxley is also involved in the Battle of Hogwarts and is overwhelmed by George Weasley and Lee Jordan .

Employee of the Ministry of Magic

Ludo Bagman

Ludovic Bagman was the head of the Department of Magic Games and Sports at the Ministry of Magic. He didn't take his job seriously, but as a former driver of the “Wimborn Wasps” and due to the resulting enthusiasm for magical games and sports, he was still well suited for his job. Bagman was acquitted on charges of espionage for the Death Eaters. However, his penchant for betting is his undoing: In the fourth volume he loses a bet against some goblins and cannot pay his betting debts. So he puts a lot of money on Harry in the Triwizard Tournament. But when Harry wins, the goblins argue that he didn't win alone, as Harry shared the victory with Cedric Diggory, and they don't waive Bagman's debt. Bagman then goes into hiding. His whereabouts remain unknown until the end.

Bartemius Crouch

Barty Crouch Sr. is the superior of Ron's brother Percy , who is absolutely loyal and submissive to him. Despite his satisfaction with Percy's job, Crouch Sr. don't remember his name and always calls him "Weatherby" instead of Weasley. In the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , Crouch sen. for the first time on. He is portrayed as stiff, humorless and at the same time quite moody. Despite the negative characteristics, Crouch sen. as highly honorable and reliable and is highly valued by his colleagues. He lives withdrawn from the public and spends his time working for the ministry.

Crouch Sr. has his only son Barty Jr. Sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban, who was a Death Eater involved in torturing Neville's parents. When his wife, whom he loved like no one else, became terminally ill, she begged him to grant her last wish that her son would live in freedom. With the help of the "polyjuice" potion, the mother swapped places with the son in Azkaban and died there shortly afterwards. From then on Barty Jr. lived. hidden and under the rule of the "Imperius" curse with the father and the house-elf Winky . As Barty Jr. but got stronger again, he freed himself from the curse and put it on his father instead. Bartemius Crouch Sr. is killed by his own son at the end of volume four, turned into a bone, and buried in Hagrid's garden.

Cornelius Fudge

Cornelius Oswald Fudge is the Minister for Magic of Great Britain and has been awarded the Order of Merlin, 1st class until the end of volume five . He is not a real enemy of Harry Potter, but as an equally incompetent and scheming Minister of Magic, he is a great threat. Fudge's greatest concern is to be ousted and replaced as Minister by Albus Dumbledore. He denies the return of Lord Voldemort and systematically thwarts all attempts to finally defeat Voldemort and his followers (who in his opinion no longer exist). So Fudge puts pressure on the Daily Prophet , the wizarding newspaper, to discredit Harry and Albus Dumbledore and to silence them. In addition, he brings Hogwarts temporarily under the control of the Ministry of Magic by first using Dolores Umbridge as a teacher and "Grand Inquisitor" and finally as headmistress. At the end of the fifth volume, Fudge realizes that Voldemort has returned and is eventually replaced by Rufus Scrimgeour as Minister of Magic due to his failure. But he remains in the ministry.

Rufus Scrimgeour

Rufus Scrimgeour is appointed Minister of Magic in the sixth volume, replacing Cornelius Fudge from his office. When Harry gets to know him and refuses to work with him, Harry comes to the realization that the Ministry knows nothing but extremes: Scrimgeour's predecessor Fudge did nothing at all against Lord Voldemort , whereas with Scrimgeour a blind actionism seems to prevail with the result that innocents in Land Azkaban. Scrimgeour was the former head of the Auror headquarters , limps a little and with his gray-blond whiskers looks like an "old lion" who has been hardened from years of struggle. In the seventh volume, Rufus Scrimgeour is captured and killed by Death Eaters when they take over the Ministry of Magic, because he does not want to reveal anything about Harry's whereabouts.

Pius Thicknesse

Pius Thicknesse acts as Minister for Magic in the seventh volume, succeeding Rufus Scrimgeour. He previously served as the head of the Magical Law Enforcement Division. Before he took office, Thicknesse was placed under the Imperius Curse by Death Eater Yaxley , so he is nothing more than a puppet of Lord Voldemort, who carries out his orders in the Ministry. His term of office ends with the Battle of Hogwarts.

Kingsley Shacklebolt

Kingsley Shacklebolt is an auror who first appears in volume five. He is a member of the Phoenix Order's Life Guard, which escorts Harry from the Dursley's house to 12 Grimmauldplatz . In the Ministry, Shacklebolt has the task of promoting the search for Sirius Black, but as a member of the order he knows how to prevent this. In the same volume, Shacklebolt plays an important role by using a memory charm to prevent Marietta Edgecombe from revealing details about the DA ("Dumbledore's Army"). Shacklebolt rushes to the aid of Harry and his friends when they are drawn into the battle with the Death Eaters in the Department of Magic at the Department of Magic. In the sixth volume, Kingsley is given the task of keeping the Muggle Prime Minister safe, as the Muggle world is now more and more involved in the conflict with Voldemort. The initially unsuspecting Prime Minister is very satisfied with Shacklebolt's work, but extremely shocked when he learns that Shacklebolt is a wizard. At the end of the seventh volume, after the Battle of Hogwarts, in which he directly fought Voldemort, Shacklebolt was appointed provisional Minister of Magic, and later - Rowling revealed in an interview - was permanently elected to this post. His official acts include, among other things, recalling the Dementors from Azkaban and hiring the adult Harry as head of the Auror headquarters.

Other employees

Other Ministry employees named are: Arthur and Percy Weasley , Nymphadora Tonks , Alastor Moody (suspended), Dolores Umbridge , Dirk Cresswell, Bertha Jorkins, Broderick Bode, Bob Ogden, Amos Diggory (father of Cedric Diggory ), Amelia Bones (head of department the department for magical law enforcement, is killed between the 5th and 6th volume by Voldemort) and Mafalda Hopfkirch (in the original Hopkirk ).

Other magicians

Bathilda Bagshot

Bathilda Bagshot was a famous historian, the author of the textbook "A History of Magic" and the great-aunt of Gellert Grindelwald . She lived in Godric's Hollow and knew both the Potters , who occasionally invited her to afternoon tea, and the Dumbledore family . That is why she also acts as a source for Rita Skeeter's work "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore" with exclusive background information about his unhappy family life. However, since Bathilda has to struggle with memory problems due to her enormous age, Rita Skeeter has to use magic to help her memory on the jumps. In the seventh volume Harry Potter and Hermione Granger stumble upon Bathilda's remains in Godric's Hollow, which Lord Voldemort uses as a trap for Harry. For this purpose he integrated his snake Nagini into Bathilda's corpse. It is unclear whether Bathilda had died of old age by this time or whether Voldemort brought her to a brutal end.

Gregorovich

Gregorowitsch (originally Gregorovitch , his first name is not mentioned in the books) is a manufacturer of wands in Eastern Europe. Among other things, he manufactured the wand for the participant in the Triwizard Tournament Viktor Krum . Gregorowitsch was the owner of the Elder Wand for a long time until it was stolen from him by Gellert Grindelwald . The fact that he continued to claim to own the wand for advertising reasons was his undoing: To get information about this legendary wand, Voldemort hunted Gregorovich and finally killed him.

Gellert Grindelwald

Gellert Grindelwald was notorious in the wizarding world as the worst magician before the appearance of Lord Voldemort. The reader will initially only be informed that he was defeated by Albus Dumbledore in 1945 . In the seventh volume it is known about him that he was the great-nephew of the famous historian Bathilda Bagshot and how the young Albus Dumbledore lived in Godric's Hollow . He attended Durmstrang School in Eastern Europe and was interested in the Deathly Hallows . He was friends with the young Albus Dumbledore. In their youthful arrogance, they jointly planned a new world order in which wizards would rule over muggles. Their friendship came to an abrupt end when Dumbledore's younger sister Ariana was accidentally killed in the course of a wandfight between Albus, Aberforth, and Grindelwald; by whom is unclear. Grindelwald returned to the east, where he committed various crimes to increase his power. Dumbledore refused to contact him for years until he finally found himself forced to take action against him after he had taken possession of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows. Grindelwald was defeated in a duel that is not described further and imprisoned in the Nurmengard magician prison, which he had once built himself to accommodate his own opponents. He is still trapped there when Lord Voldemort visits him in search of the Elder Wand. Disappointed with his answers, which he had expected more from, Voldemort kills Grindelwald. At a later point in the seventh volume it is indicated that Grindelwald regretted his crimes during his long imprisonment.

Igor Karkaroff

Igor Karkaroff is the headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute, a wizarding school whose pupil Viktor Krum takes part in the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts. Karkaroff used to be one of Voldemort's Death Eaters . After his fall, he betrayed many Death Eaters in order to avoid punishment from the Ministry of Magic himself. Karkaroff flees after Voldemort's return in volume four and is found murdered after about a year in a remote hut in the north.

Rita Skeeter

Rita Kimmkorn (originally "Rita Skeeter") is a reporter for the Daily Prophet who is always on the hunt for new sensations. In the fourth volume, Hermione finds out that she is an unregistered animagus and that her ability to transform into a bug makes it possible for her to get information for her articles unnoticed. Hermione uses this insight as leverage after Rita wrote some very negative articles about Hermione's dealings with Harry. When the Daily Prophet continues to vilify Harry in the fifth volume, Rita conducts an interview with him about the return of Lord Voldemort, which appears in the Quibbler . In the seventh volume she publishes a book called "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore", in which she says she reveals some terrible secrets about the deceased headmaster. Rita Kimmkorn writes her articles with a so-called "fleet writing pen", which independently writes down the interviews she has conducted and often twists some facts in the process.

Xenophilius Lovegood

Xenophilius Lovegood is the father of Luna Lovegood and the editor of Quibbler. Just like his daughter, he believes in things that have not been proven and are generally considered fairy tales and nonsense by magicians. In his fifth year he supports Harry Potter by publishing an interview that reveals the return of Lord Voldemort . In the aftermath of Voldemort's return, his magazine is the only one that prints the truth about what happened to the Death Eaters and the Ministry of Magic. While searching for the Horcruxes, Harry, Ron and Hermione meet Luna's father, who reveals the secret of the three Deathly Hallows to them. It turns out, however, that he lured the protagonists into a trap and betrayed them to the Death Eaters in exchange for the life of his daughter Luna, who is being held captive by them. The three are able to flee from the approaching Death Eaters and later learn that Xenophilius was deported to Azkaban .

Olympus maxim

Olympe Maxime is the headmistress of Beauxbatons, a French wizarding school whose pupil Fleur Delacour takes part in the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts. She is always respectfully addressed by everyone as “Madame Maxime”. Its appearance is described as elegant, but its dimensions are on par with the semi-giant Rubeus Hagrid . Olympe does not want to reveal herself as a half-giant in order to avoid the prejudices in the magical world. After the tournament is over, she and Hagrid take on the challenge of contacting the giants in Eastern Europe to prevent them from joining Lord Voldemort .

Aunt Muriel

Aunt Muriel is a relative of the Weasleys who makes a major appearance in Volume 7 at the wedding between Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour . She is passionate about gossip and is a huge fan of Rita Skeeter , whose revelations about the downside of Albus Dumbledore Muriel also believes. At the wedding, Harry becomes part of a lengthy conversation between Muriel and Elphias Doge , who disagree about the true character of Dumbledore. The 107-year-old witch appears to be a rather unfriendly person and is, for example, dissatisfied that Bill is marrying a French woman. Nevertheless, Muriel grants the Weasley family shelter when they are later persecuted in the seventh volume.

Mr. Ollivander

Mr. Garrick Ollivander (his first name was posted on Pottermore) is an elderly wizard and wands maker . He runs a shop on Diagon Alley and remembers every single wand he sells. Nearly every character in the books was his client, including Harry Potter and the young Tom Riddle . As part of the Triwizard Tournament , Mr. Ollivander comes to Hogwarts to check the participants' wands, as the rules of the game require. At the beginning of the sixth volume it is mentioned that Mr. Ollivander disappeared in an enigmatic manner. In the seventh volume it finally turns out that he was kidnapped by Lord Voldemort to give him information about the mysterious Elder Wand ("Elder Wand"). Together with Luna Lovegood , Mr. Ollivander is held in the Malfoy's mansion until Dobby the house elf frees him.

Madam Rosmerta

Madam Rosmerta is the hostess of the inn The Three Broomsticks ( "The Three Broomsticks") in Hogsmeade. She is described as handsome, and at some points in the books it becomes apparent that Ron Weasley has a crush on her. In the sixth volume she becomes an unwanted helper of the Death Eaters by means of the " Imperius " curse.

Muggle

The people without magical descent and without magical abilities are called Muggles by the magicians (in the original "Muggles").

Frank Bryce

Frank, a war veteran, was the gardener on the Riddle estate and was initially charged with the murder of the Riddle family. He was released again because after the examination of the corpses, a murder from a "Muggle perspective" could not be proven. Thereupon Frank returned to his old place of work and worked there for the subsequent owners of the manor house. When the house had been abandoned for a long time many years later, one evening Frank heard strange noises from the former study and happened to witness a conversation between the weakened, still disembodied Lord Voldemort and his caretaker and servant Wormtail , which was about the murder goes to Bertha Jorkins and the capture of Harry Potter. He is tracked down by Voldemort's snake Nagini and then murdered by Voldemort with the " Avada Kedavra " curse.

The Dursleys

The Dursleys live at number 4 Privet Drive (originally number four, Privet Drive ) in Little Whinging , a bourgeois suburb of London in the county of Surrey . Petunia Dursley is a born Evans and the older sister of Lily Potter , but unlike her has no magical abilities. Just like her husband Vernon, Petunia thinks sorcery is an abnormality or some type of mental illness. This is probably also because the parents preferred the magically gifted Lily to her, and also because she was not accepted at Hogwarts at the time (despite a personal letter to Dumbledore). Vernon Dursley runs the successful Grunnings company that manufactures drilling machines. He loves to curse his employees ("turn into a snail"). He's extremely opposed to anything magical, mainly because he's afraid of what he doesn't know. If magic is talked about in his presence, it is easy for Vernon to lose his temper. He initially tries to prevent Harry from receiving wizard training at Hogwarts.

After Harry's parents were murdered by Lord Voldemort , the Dursleys reluctantly raised Harry for ten years before he was called to Hogwarts . During this time he was never treated well by them. Nevertheless, Harry's regular stay with the Dursleys until he comes of age (17 years) is important for his survival, as Dumbledore uses a spell to protect his home from being discovered by Voldemort and his helpers.

Petunia and Vernon have a son named Dudley, whom they spoil very much and who they treat better than Harry in every way. Dudley is described as greedy, aggressive, overweight and stupid (a kind of negative counter-image to Harry, who is about the same age); these characteristics, often in combination with one another, lead to repulsive to embarrassingly funny situations. His mother names Dudley with nicknames like "Duddymatz" or "Dud". After becoming a junior heavyweight champion, his gang members also refer to him as "Big D". In the fifth volume, Dudley is almost kissed by a dementor . In saying goodbye to Harry (Volume 7), he thanks Harry for saving him from the Dementors.

Vernon's sister, Magdalena "Magda" Dursley (in the original: Marjorie or Marge for short ) is also mentioned in the books . She breeds English Bulldogs and apparently hates Harry even more than the rest of the Dursleys. During a visit to the third volume, she insults Harry's dead parents in the worst possible way, whereupon Harry inadvertently casts a spell on her that inflates her into a giant flying balloon. A special unit of the Ministry of Magic succeeds in undoing the spell.

The riddles

The Riddle family were the landlords in the village of Little Hangleton until the 1940s , where they lived in the largest and most beautiful estate. In the village, however, they are rather unpopular and notorious for their rudeness and arrogance. Her son Tom is in a relationship with Cecilia, a girl from the village, but leaves her when he is bewitched by Merope Gaunt with a love potion. The two run away with each other, which causes quite a stir in the village, and marry. After some time, however, Merope stops the love potion or it loses its effect, so that the spell is removed from Tom. Disappointed and with the feeling of having been duped, he lets go of her and returns to his parents' house, knowing that Merope is already pregnant with Tom Vorlost Riddle . After all, the entire Riddle family is murdered one evening by the 16-year-old Tom Riddle with the " Avada Kedavra " curse. He uses his uncle Morfin's wand for this, so he is never officially charged with this murder.

Ghosts

Many ghosts live in the 1,000 year old Hogwarts School of Magic . They are disembodied, their appearance is pearly white and almost transparent. You can slide through walls and people and communicate with people. They are images of the souls of deceased magicians, “weak afterimages of life”. In order to continue to exist as a ghost after death, a wizard has to make a conscious choice, but few choose this form of existence. One reason for a decision to exist as a spirit is, for example, the fear of death. An exception is the character Peeves , who, unlike the other ghosts, is a physical poltergeist with a chaotic disposition and not the soul of a deceased wizard.

Each of the four schoolhouses at Hogwarts has a house ghost: Gryffindor's house ghost is Nearly Headless Nick , Hufflepuffs is the Fat Monk, Ravenclaws is the Gray Lady, and Slytherins is the Bloody Baron .

The Bloody Baron

The Bloody Baron is the only ghost at Hogwarts who really has Peeves ' poltergeist under control. He is the house ghost of Slytherin and apparently died a gruesome death because his cloak is covered in silver blood splatters. In the first volume, the almost headless Nick says to the first graders that he never asked him where he got all the blood stains from. In the seventh volume, it is revealed that he killed his lover, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw , who has since been the house ghost of the Ravenclaw house at Hogwarts as the Gray Lady . When he realized what he had done, he killed himself too.

Almost Headless Nick

The Nearly Headless Nick ("The Nearly Headless Nick") is the house spirit of Gryffindor . His real name is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington. He is called "almost headless" because his head (even after several ax blows) was not completely severed when he was beheaded on Halloween , October 31, 1492 (the executioner used a blunt ax), but still hangs by two centimeters of neck. That is why he cannot take part in the annual headless hunt, which is apparently popular in the spirit realm. The timeline of the Harry Potter world can also be determined using the date of his death. Accordingly, he will celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death on October 31, 1992; Harry and Ron were therefore born in 1980 and Hermione in 1979. (According to JK Rowling, Hermione is almost 12 when she comes to Hogwarts.) JK Rowling himself does not initially use this timeline and only confirms it in the last volume using the tombstone of James and Lily Potter. Although Almost Headless Nick is a real ghost, in the second volume he could be petrified by the gaze of a basilisk and later restored with a mandrake potion.

The gray lady

The Gray Lady is the spirit of the House of Ravenclaw . In the seventh volume it turns out that her name was Helena Ravenclaw during her lifetime and that she was the daughter of the co-founder of Hogwarts Rowena Ravenclaw . She was murdered by the Bloody Baron. In her search for Rowena Ravenclaw's tiara, which was transformed into a Horcrux by Lord Voldemort, she can give Harry Potter an important clue.

The Moaning Myrtle

The Moaning Myrtle ("The Moaning Myrtle"), the ghost of a Ravenclaw student, haunts a girls' toilet, where she constantly laments that she is dead and no one is mourning her. Many years ago, when she was still in school, she was killed by the basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets . Voldemort created his first Horcrux upon her death . After she had initially repeatedly appeared to Olive Hornby, a classmate who had always ridiculed her during her lifetime, she was banished to the toilet. She is a little in love with Harry Potter and when he meets her sporadically (in any even-numbered volume) complains to him that he visits her so rarely. In the fourth volume, Myrtle helps Harry to decipher the reference to the Aquarius. In the sixth volume she befriends Draco Malfoy and is not very happy when Harry hurts him with the " Sectumsempra " curse.

Peeves

Peeves is the poltergeist at Hogwarts. He sees his purpose in being to cause trouble and unrest wherever possible. Throwing and dropping fragile objects is one of his favorite pastimes. Only the Bloody Baron and Albus Dumbledore can set limits to his activities, as these two are the only ones he doesn't dare to antagonize. Argus Filch, who as Squib has to suffer a lot from Peeves, constantly threatens him to campaign with Dumbledore to have Peeves thrown out of Hogwarts. Peeves does not normally obey anyone, but he takes off his hat when Fred and George Weasley tell him in the fifth volume to cause Dolores Umbridge as much inconvenience as possible (in the original "Give her hell from us, Peeves!").

In the second Battle for Hogwarts (at the end of the seventh volume), Peeves is one of the loyal defenders of the castle with a very personal contribution: he hisses over the heads of the fighting wizards and bombarded the Death Eaters with all sorts of extremely unpleasant magical plants from the supply of Professor Sprout .

Non-human beings

Dementors

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012 (Dementor) .jpg

Dementors (in the original Dementors ) are soulless and evil creatures. They are bigger than humans and only visible to wizards. They wear long black cloaks with a black hood over their faces and have slimy hands that look as if they had rotted in the water. Dementors float above the ground and take deep, rattling breaths for air. They evoke the worst memories in their victims and soak up happiness wherever they are. Hardly anyone knows what is hidden under their hood, because they only take it off when they want to completely destroy someone. This weapon is called "the Dementor's kiss" ("Dementor's kiss"). If the dementor carries him out, he takes off his hood and sucks the soul out of his victim through a kind of gullet. Since one can live without a soul, from then on one ekes out one's existence as an empty shell. Dementors cannot see anything, but “feel” their victims on the basis of their feelings and track them down. When dementors hatch offspring, fog spreads over entire areas. No physical harm can be done to them. The only spell that counteracts them is the difficult " Patronus " spell, which if done correctly will drive them away.

Harry Potter comes into contact with them for the first time when they search the Hogwarts Express in the third volume for Sirius Black, who has escaped from Azkaban. In the fifth volume, Harry and Dudley are attacked by two Dementors. However, Harry can successfully drive them away.

As Azkaban prison guards, the Dementors report to the Ministry of Magic until the end of Volume 5 . When Lord Voldemort appears openly after his return, however, they revolt and join him, as he is able to offer them more people to feed on. You are also involved in the battle for Hogwarts in Volume 7 on Voldemort's side, but can be kept in check by various defenders with the "Patronus" spell. According to Joanne K. Rowling, she is withdrawing Kingsley Shacklebolt as guards from Azkaban.

Goblins

Kobolds (in the original " Goblins ") are human-like beings with pointed ears, narrow faces and long fingers. They are smaller than humans but larger than house-elves . Kobolds are very intelligent. They have different magical powers than magicians, which they refer to as "wand carriers". Goblins have special metalworking techniques - Godric Gryffindor's sword, for example, is goblin-made. In the wizarding world they work in various trades, for example many of them work in the wizarding bank Gringotts . However, they do not have much sympathy for wizards, as they feel - as briefly indicated in a conversation in the fifth volume and the statements of the goblin Griphook and the explanations of Bill Weasley in the seventh volume - they feel disadvantaged in the magical society compared to the wizards . This fact seems to have led to conflicts between magicians and goblins in the past, because the so-called "goblin uprisings" are mentioned again and again in different volumes.

For goblins, the owner is not the buyer of a product, but the manufacturer. A buyer has only rented the goods, and after their death they must be returned to the manufacturer.

Another type of goblin are the leprechauns (Irish goblins) brought by the Irish as mascots at the Quidditch World Cup (Volume 4 ). They distribute their “Leprechaun Gold” to all viewers, but this dissolves after several hours.

House elves

House- elves ( house-elves in the English original) are small, humanoid creatures with protruding, pointed bat ears, large eyes and a snout instead of a nose. They usually spend their entire lives serving their masters loyally and submissively. They have enormously strong magical powers, but they never use them against their masters. Since the magic of house-elves differs in some ways from that of wizards and witches, house-elves can also do things that wizards and witches cannot, for example Apparate and Disapparate in places where wizards and witches cannot because of a spell ( e.g. Hogwarts or the dungeon in the basement of Malfoy Manor).

House-elves are often not treated like sentient beings, but rather like a material possession. They represent a kind of status symbol in the wizarding community. The duty to serve is deeply indoctrinated to them , so they do not see their service as being exploited. If they fail to obey an order from their Lord, whether of their own free will or because of adverse circumstances, they are physically punishing themselves. An owner can release his house-elf by giving him an item of clothing - but many house-elves see this as a shame and the worst that can happen to them. In the seventh volume, the house elves who work at Hogwarts fight the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Dobby

Dobby (Harry Potter) -body.jpg

Dobby is a house elf in the service of the Malfoy family . He acts without their knowledge when he tries to keep Harry Potter away from Hogwarts for his protection. For this disloyalty to his masters (and also for other disloyalty) he punishes himself, for example by banging his head against a wall . During the course of the second volume, he and Harry become friends. Harry finally frees him from the Malfoys' domination through a trick. Dobby can look forward to his freedom, which is why he is an exception among the house-elves. He lives out his right to wear clothes, acquired through freedom, by wearing unnecessarily many items of clothing in combinations that are inappropriate in terms of color and style. He is later employed by Albus Dumbledore at Hogwarts for a fee. With this money he buys u. a. Wool to regularly knit new socks for Harry. He lovingly takes care of Winky , who is not at all happy with her freedom.

In the course of the story, Dobby repeatedly plays smaller roles: In the fourth volume, he helps Harry to pass the second task of the Triwizard Tournament . In the fifth volume he can call Harry and the DA ("Dumbledore's Army") a perfect practice room, the room of wishes , and warns them about Dolores Umbridge . In the sixth volume, he and Kreacher shadow Draco Malfoy when Harry wants to find out more about his plans. In the seventh volume he frees Harry and other colleagues from captivity in the dungeons of the Malfoys' estate, and is fatally injured by Bellatrix Lestrange . Harry buries his friend (unusual for wizards) without magic and thus pays his respects to the faithful house-elf. Dobby's tombstone at Bill and Fleur Weasley's house gives Harry the inscription, " Here lies Dobby, a Free Elf " ("Here lies Dobby, a Free Elf").

Winky

Winky is a house-elf and, like her ancestors, is in the service of the Crouch family. Bartemius (Barty) Crouch releases her in the fourth volume after she could not prevent his son Barty Crouch Jr. stole Harry Potter's wand under her supervision so that the Dark Mark would draw in the sky and escape. Looking for a new job, she wanders around England and meets Dobby . Together with him she is employed by Albus Dumbledore at Hogwarts . However, she has difficulties to accept her freedom and a new "master" and therefore regularly gets drunk with Butterbeer. Winky's fate, the poor treatment and dismissal from Bartemius Crouch are the trigger for Hermione Granger to become involved in the rights of elves.

From the fifth volume onwards, Winky no longer appears personally in the series; however, Rowling has indicated that she - along with the other house-elves - participated in the second battle of Hogwarts and continued to work at Hogwarts after that in a more sober state.

Kreacher

Kreacher is an old house elf in the service of the Black family in the house at 12 Grimmauldplatz in London. Easily demented and angry that he should serve the “black sheep” of the Black family (i.e. Sirius ), Kreacher often expresses his thoughts aloud, because he has lived alone for a long time and thinks that nobody can hear him. Just like his former masters he harbors a deep dislike of Muggle borns and called Hermione always unabashedly " sludge blood ". His greatest wish is that his head will be stuffed and hung on a wall in the Black house next to the heads of his ancestors. After Sirius' death, Harry Potter inherits both the house and the house-elf. Since Harry has no better use for him, he orders him to work in the kitchen at Hogwarts. Kreacher isn't happy that Harry is his new master because he doesn't belong to the Black family. At Hogwarts, Dobby is supposed to check whether Kreacher is following Harry's orders.

In Volume 7, when Harry, Hermione, and Ron begin to understand Kreacher's point of view and show respect for him, Kreacher becomes courteous and kind, even to Hermione. He washes himself again and wears a "pure white" tea towel. At the end of the seventh volume he leads the fight of the house-elves of Hogwarts against Voldemort, on behalf of his former master Regulus Black , for whom he once stole Salazar Slytherin's medallion, a Horcrux, from Voldemort's cave by the sea (which was later made by Mundungus Fletcher stolen from 12 Grimmauldplatz and taken from him by Dolores Umbridge ).

Giants

The last remaining giant ( Giants ) live in the mountains of Eastern Europe (presumably in the Urals or in the Caucasus ). They have been hunted by humans for centuries because they are alien and very violent. In the mountains, scattered remains of the once great people have found their last refuge. In addition to the persecution by the magicians, their number has also decreased drastically due to bloody wars among themselves. They are ruled by a "gurg". Humans can produce offspring with giants, so-called half giants. Rubeus Hagrid is a half- giant, as is presumably Olympe Maxime , the headmistress of the Beauxbatons Wizarding School, who, however, denies ancestry from giants. After Voldemort's return, the Order of the Phoenix sends the two of them with gifts as ambassadors to the giants to offer them friendship and to prevent them from rejoining Voldemort's army. On his return, Hagrid brings his half-brother Grawp, a "only" five meter tall giant, to Hogwarts, where he hides him in the Forbidden Forest and tries to teach him some English. When Hagrid is briefly expelled from Hogwarts in Volume Five, he asks Harry, Ron, and Hermione to look after him. In the seventh volume, Grawp takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts as the only giant of the good side.

Veela

The Veela appear for the first time in volume four as the team mascot of the Bulgarian national team at the Quidditch World Cup. Outwardly, they appear as beautiful women with shimmering skin and flowing, white gold hair. They begin to dance to supernatural music and put the male audience in trance-like enthusiasm. Those who watch and listen to the Veela fall under the spell of their magic and do everything to attract their attention. But the Veela also have a dark side. If they get angry, they can turn into ugly bird creatures with sharp beaks and scaly wings that throw fireballs at their opponents. Fleur Delacour's grandmother was a veela, which is sometimes reflected in Fleur's effect on men.

Aquarius

Aquatic people (English Merpeople ) live under water. They are intelligent, probably as intelligent as humans and centaurs. Aquarians have grayish skin, long dark green hair, pointy teeth, and yellow eyes. Under water they can use human language, but over water it is only a screeching singing ("sea-like"), which only very few people understand (e.g. Dumbledore). They keep Grindelohs as pets and plant seaweed gardens. In the books they appear during the second task of the "Triwizard Tournament" (Volume 4) and during the funeral of Dumbledore (Volume 6).

Centaurs

Centaurs (in the original Centaurs ), of which a herd lives in the Forbidden Forest, have the torso of a horse and the torso of a man. They are experts in the fields of star German, magical healing, fortune telling and archery. They are also extremely proud. They want nothing to do with the people they feel superior to. In the fifth volume, the centaur Firenze is expelled from his flock because he has agreed to step in as a fortune telling teacher for Prof. Sibyll Trelawney , and has thus supposedly put himself at the service of the people. In the seventh volume, however, the herd fights in the battle of Hogwarts against the Death Eaters.
