action

19 years after his successful battle against Lord Voldemort , Harry Potter has come of age. The now 37-year-old is now a revised employee of the Ministry of Magic , where he works in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He married Ginny Weasley , who works as a Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet , with whom Harry has three school-age children. Harry has always had a hard time, but the stress of work and private life is sometimes too much for him, and the relationship with his youngest son Albus Severus, who does not want anything to do with his father, is distant. While Harry used to earn his current status, Albus Severus is still struggling with his family's legacy and with always being in the shadow of his famous father.

Also, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger , Harry's best friends from his school days, have married. While Ron now runs the magic shop Weasley's Magic Jokes with his brother George , the ambitious Hermione has achieved the position of Minister of Magic. They also have two children: Hugo and Rose. Their daughter is an excellent Quidditch player . Draco Malfoy, Harry's old enemy, who now also works in the Ministry of Magic, also has a son named Scorpius. Harry and his friends say goodbye to their children at Kings Cross Station for the ride to Hogwarts Wizarding School. Albus Severus, who in contrast to his father is a rather shy outsider, boarded the Hogwarts Express, in which Harry once met wizards of the same age for the first time, at platform nine and three quarters with mixed feelings. The 11-year-old feels it is a burden to be the son of one of the most famous magicians in history. On the train, he befriends Scorpius Malfoy of all people. At Hogwarts, Professor Minerva McGonagall is now director.

Albus Severus learns that Cedric Diggory's father has asked Harry to use a time turner to bring his son back to life. Harry refuses to help. Albus Severus wants to prove himself and correct his father's mistake with the help of a time travel . With the help of Cedric's cousin Delphi, Albus Severus and Scorpius are able to steal a time turner at the Ministry of Magic. In an attempt to prevent Cedric's murder by Peter Pettigrew on Voldemort's orders at the end of the Triwizard Tournament , the two unleash a chain of unforeseen events that change the entire magical world. In an alternate timeline , Harry dies and Lord Voldemort rules the world.

Scorpius manages to undo the unwanted changes in the alternate timeline with the help of the time turner, with Severus Snape, who is fighting Voldemort underground with Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, helping him. Scorpius and Albus Severus decide to destroy the Time-Turner to avoid further undesirable repercussions on time. However, they are duped by Delphi, who reveals to the two that she is the secret daughter of Lord Voldemort and, based on a prophecy, believes that by rescuing the "superfluous" Cedric she will be able to reunite with her father in the past. Albus and Scorpius initially succeed in thwarting this plan, but Delphi instead travels with the two of them to 1981 to prevent Lord Voldemort from killing Harry's parents and thus sealing his own fate. However, Albus Severus can call his parents to his rescue from the present. In a fight in Godric's Hollow, Harry, Draco, Hermione, Ron and Ginny, along with Albus Severus and Scorpius, manage to defeat Delphi. Harry Potter finds a new approach to Albus Severus, and father and son grow closer again.

Viewers can see the play spread over two days, or on one day, as part of a matinee and an evening performance. Production history

Author of the play: Joanne K. Rowling (2010)

On June 26, 2015, on the 18th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , Rowling announced that the play about Harry Potter , which had already been announced as a supposed prequel in December 2013 , would be created, it however a sequel and the name of the play in the original Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be. In June 2015 it was also announced that Tony and Olivier Award winner John Tiffany would be directing the play. On October 23, 2015 it was announced that the play would continue the plot of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the eighth story in the series .

In October 2015, Rowling revealed via Twitter that the play should be a regular sequel to the Potter adventures. When asked why she preferred a play to a new novel, she replied that once the audience has seen the play, they will agree that the theater is the only appropriate medium for this story. Screenwriter Jack Thorne wrote the play, and he, Rowling, and director Tiffany wrote the story. Thorne received the Best British Newcomer Award in 2009 . of the London Film Festival and was BAFTA winner in 2012 .

In addition to Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender are also producing the play . Steven Hoggett is in charge of the choreography, Christine Jones is responsible for the set design , Katrina Lindsay is in charge of the costume design, and Neil Austin is in charge of the lighting technology .

Gareth Fry is responsible for the sound design, Jeremy Chernick for special effects, Jamie Harrison for the illusions , and Martin Lowe for the musical direction . The composer of the music is Imogen Heap .

A poster for the piece published in October 2015 shows a little boy who is frightened sitting in a spherical nest with wings attached. The boy is said to be Albus Severus Potter, and the nest itself is reminiscent of the golden snitch that was bequeathed to Harry Potter by Dumbledore and in which he had hidden the Resurrection Stone. Several months before the premiere, a large sculpture was unveiled in front of the Palace Theater showing almost the same motif.

On May 31, 2016, first photos of the costumes were published via Pottermore. These showed the cast of Harry Potter, Ginny Potter nee Weasley and Albus Severus Potter in the clothes they will wear in the play. Later, in a background video, in addition to a brief statement by Harry Potter actor Jamie Parker, who still wears glasses in the play, the actors of the characters Draco and Scorpius Malfoy, Ron Weasley, Hermi (o) ne Granger and Rose Granger- Weasley in their costumes and more photos of the actors, some with and some without costumes, published.

occupation

Shortly before Christmas 2015, Rowling announced the names of the actors who will take on the leading roles in the play. Jamie Parker plays Harry Potter, Ron Weasley is played by Paul Thornley and Noma Dumezweni took on the role of Hermione Granger. The fact that Dumezweni is dark but Hermione is white in the films sparked a heated debate about black actors in roles as fictional characters and racism in general. Many Harry Potter fans and actors expressed satisfaction with the cast, Rowling herself defending the decision, saying that Hermione was never specified as white in the books. Sam Clemmett is seen in the play in the role of Albus Severus Potter. On March 4, 2016, it was announced that Anthony Boyle would play Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Harry's archenemy Draco Malfoy. In early June 2016, the cast of the roles of Ginny Potter with Poppy Miller , Draco Malfoy with Alex Price and Rose Granger-Weasley with Cherrelle Skeete was announced.

Extensive retrofitting had to be carried out in advance at the Lyric Theater. So the designers decided to move the main entrance just for the piece from the retail and pedestrian-clogged tourist trap on West 42nd Street to West 43rd, where an exit had been located in recent years.

reception

Press reviews on the first season in London

The Guardian's Michael Billington says John Tiffany and his set designer Christine Jones created magic from the simplest of ingredients. Critics were also impressed by the costume designs and the lighting effects, often highlighting the appearance of the terrifying Dementors.

Elysa Gardner writes in USA Today that it will be a spectacle with a sound story in good British fashion, without bragging rights. Ben Brantley of the New York Times speaks of an arcana-filled plot, but the play also has its serious sides, for example when it shows the agonizing solipsism of growing up. At the end of the play, according to Brantley, the entire audience had become sorcerers' apprentices. Variety's Gordon Cox speaks of a compelling, heartfelt storyline which is Rowling's specialty, and of an impressive stage design, and said that the benevolent reviews read in the New York Times are sure to help Bring the piece to Broadway.

Especially Jamie Parker and Sam Clemmett , the cast of Harry Potter and his son Albus Severus, had impressed the critics. Ben Brantley of the New York Times also says that the role of Hermione is perfectly cast with actress Noma Dumezweni . Michael Billington praised The Guardian for the cast of Scorpius Malfoy with Anthony Boyle , who plays the role wonderfully quirky and could make the character he describes as a lovable outsider with a keen mind a new fan favorite. Paul Thornley also played a completely sensible Ron Weasley. Billington also recommends keeping an eye on actress Esther Smith , who plays Delphi Diggory . The bond between Albus Severus and Scorpius in the play is described as very strong, stronger than that of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in the novels, and goes beyond a simple friendship.

One negative review was that the story might be a bit too predictable for real Harry Potter fans. In addition, one quickly recognizes the continuity problems that showed up in comparison to the original adventures, says Dave Trumbore from Collider, because the time turner in the new story works very differently than in the novels. In addition, all time-turner in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were actually destroyed in a fight with the Death Eaters.
