John Tiffany

John Richard Tiffany OBE (* 1971 ) is a British theater director. He directed the plays Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , Black Watch and Once , among others . He won two Tony Awards , an Olivier Award , a Drama Desk Award, and an Obie Award .

life and career

Tiffany grew up in Marsden, West Yorkshire, near Huddersfield , the son of a nurse and revue dancer and an engineer who played in a brass band . In his youth he was a member of the Huddersfield Choral Society youth choir and worked at Boots UK and in a restaurant. He first studied biology at Glasgow University and later switched to classical and drama.

From 1997 to 2001 he worked at the Edinburgh Traverse Theater . He then worked with the artistic director Vicky Featherstone and was deputy director of the traveling theater Paines Plow ( Great Britain ) from 2001 to 2005 .

In late 2004, Tiffany became an assistant director at the National Theater of Scotland under the artistic direction of Vicky Featherstone . He had his first success in 2006 with the production of Black Watch by Gregory Burke. Tiffany's other productions were an adaptation of Peter Pan , performed in Glasgow in 2010, followed by a tour of London, Inverness, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. This was followed by a version of The Bacchae , Macbeth and, as the last production in 2013, Let the Right One In by John Lindqvist . Barbara Broccoli hired Tiffany for the theater production of Once . Tiffany took over the direction of the play in 2011 in the Off-Broadway and Broadway production and won the 2012 Drama Desk Award in the category "Musical Direction", the Tony Award in the category " Best Musical Direction" and an Obie Award (Special Mention). The piece was nominated for a total of 11 Tony Awards.

Tiffany led in 2013 directed the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , which was performed later on Broadway. His production of Enda Walsh's adaptation of The Twits was described by critic Dominic Cavendish ( The Daily Telegraph ) in April 2015 as "torture".

Tiffany directed the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , which was staged in London's Palace Theater in 2016 and on Broadway in 2018. In 2018 he won a Tony Award for Best Director, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award in the Drama Directing category.
