Waterstones (until January 2012: Waterstone's ) is the leading branch booksellers in the United Kingdom , which also has offices in Ireland, Brussels and Amsterdam. Books are also sold on the Internet.

In the spring of 2018, Waterstones said it operated 249 branches in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and according to other information, 283 branches as well as stores on the Channel Island of Jersey , in Cork, Ireland, as well as in Brussels and Amsterdam . The Hodges Figgis bookstore in Dublin , founded in 1768, is also part of Waterstones. In September 2018 it was announced that Waterstones would also take over the Foyles bookstores.

Founded in 1982 by Tim Waterstone on Old Brompton Road, London, the company was a wholly owned subsidiary of HMV Group , which announced in May 2011 that it had sold Waterstones to Russian entrepreneur Alexander Mamut for £ 53 million. The sale was subject to the approval of the HMV shareholders.

In the 2016/17 financial year (April 30, 2017) Waterstones achieved sales of £ 388 million.

As of May 2018, the majority of the shares were taken over by the hedge fund Elliott Advisors , a British subsidiary of the US Elliott Management Corporation .

Trivia

The "flagship branch" in Piccadilly Circus in London is the largest bookstore in Europe.
