content

After an initial short biography of the author Newt Scamander and a foreword by Albus Dumbledore a chapter follows on the definition of Beasts ( beasts ) in contrast to the magical creatures ( beings ), described human-like in appearance and behavior. What follows is a brief treatise on the perception and knowledge of animal and magical beings by Muggles over the centuries. The introduction ends with an explanation of the classification scale according to which animals are classified by the Ministry of Magic according to their dangerousness:

  • XXXXX - known as a wizard killer / impossible to tame, let alone train as a pet.
  • XXXX - Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / only permitted to deal with appropriately trained magicians.
  • XXX - Tamed by skilled wizards.
  • XX - Harmless / can be trained to be a pet.
  • X - Boring.

The main part of the book is an alphabetical index of almost all animals and magical beings from the world of Harry Potter from the acromantula to the centaur , but not all of these appear in the seven volumes of the novel series. The descriptions of the beings include the appearance, the behavior, the habitat, sometimes the reproduction as well as other special features. The usability of individual animal parts for magical purposes, for example for brewing magic potions or for making magic wands , is also discussed.
