initial situation

After Voldemort's return, Professor Dumbledore re-established the Order of the Phoenix , a secret organization tasked with fighting Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters . The Ministry of Magic insinuates Dumbledore to have invented the return of Voldemort in order to take over power and the ministerial office himself. Since only Harry's testimony proves the return of Lord Voldemort, the Ministry's propaganda , supported by the "Daily Prophet" , aims to discredit Harry and Dumbledore, who are portrayed as disturbed, confused and attention-seeking. This propaganda shows success. Dumbledore is losing many of his public offices as the Ministry exerts increasing influence at Hogwarts . Harry feels isolated and has hardly heard from his friends, let alone Dumbledore, since the start of the vacation.

action

The story begins in the middle of summer. One evening Harry Potter and his cousin - the Muggle (non-mage) Dudley - are attacked by two Dementors . Harry drives the Dementors away with a Patronus spell , Dudley goes into shock. Harry takes Dudley back to his uncle Vernon's and aunt Petunia's home with the help of Mrs. Figg, a neighbor. However, these make him responsible for Dudley's condition. Only a magical letter to Harry's aunt, a so-called "howler", prevents Harry from being thrown out of the house. Since spells are forbidden for minors outside of school, the Wizengamot summons Harry to a court hearing due to the use of the Patronus spell.

Four days later, members of the Phoenix Order pick Harry up and broom him to the headquarters at 12 Grimmauldplatz , the birthplace of his godfather Sirius Black . Harry's friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley and his family have been there for weeks. During his stay, Harry meets various members of the Order, including many familiar faces, including the real Alastor Moody and Remus Lupine .

Although the Ministry of Magic is moving the hearing to a different location and an earlier time at short notice, Dumbledore has foreseen this step and appears in time for Harry's defense. Ultimately, the arbitration tribunal acquitted Harry - against the vote of the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge - but Harry now knows that the Minister is biased against him and Dumbledore. A member of the Wizengamot is the extremely unsympathetic Dolores Umbridge . At the start of school, it turns out that she is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher . She only teaches the otherwise so practical subject theoretically and terrorizes the students, especially Harry. In the process, by order of the Minister of Magic, she is even appointed Grand Inquisitor of Hogwarts , thus extending her power of disposal over the teachers. So she quits the divination teacher Sibyll Trelawney and tries to expel her from the school in front of the assembled student body. Dumbledore cannot withdraw the notice, but allows Trelawney to continue living on the school premises. A little later, Hagrid , the gamekeeper of Hogwarts, is to be arrested under the leadership of Umbridge and taken to the wizarding prison of Azkaban. But he can tear himself away at the last moment and flee, while Professor McGonagall , who tries to protect Hagrid, is seriously injured by shock spells.

In this school year, the students from Harry's year have to take exams in various subjects. You will then receive the so-called ZAGs (magic degrees, in the original: OWL, Ordinary Wizarding Level, German: “Ordinary Wizarding Level”), which should serve as the basis for your participation in advanced subjects. For Harry and his friends, this is the first time that the question arises as to which career paths they want to pursue after completing their training at Hogwarts in order to be able to prepare for the important exams.

But other worries also plague Harry: On the one hand, Hermione persuades him to found a secret association in which Harry is supposed to give other students practical experience in defense against the Dark Arts. The club bears the name " Dumbledore's Army ", or " DA " for short , as a parody of the fears of Cornelius Fudge . Second, Harry has repeated dreams that put him in the Department of Mysteries of the Ministry of Magic. During one of these dreams, Harry finds himself in the body of Voldemort's serpent and attacks Ron's father, who is on guard outside the Department of Mysteries for the Order of the Phoenix . Harry immediately informs Dumbledore and Ron's father can be saved. Dumbledore knows that Harry not only dreams, but is connected to Voldemort and can perceive his feelings and thoughts. He therefore instructs Professor Snape to teach Harry in " Occlumency, " the doctrine of the closure of the mind - but without much success.

After a few months, the meetings of "Dumbledore's Army" fly up. Due to the name, Cornelius Fudge wants to have Dumbledore arrested. But he cannot be led away unconditionally and flees. Dolores Umbridge becomes the new school principal. When Fred and George Weasley are caught wreaking havoc at Hogwarts, they decide to quit school. But with their departure they encourage almost the entire student body to rebel against Umbridge and their machinations. Most of the other teachers provide secret support for the students. Only the caretaker Argus Filch , a Squib who does not know magic himself, is behind Umbridge and her efforts to ensure "peace and order" at Hogwarts.

During his final OWL exam, Harry has another vision and sees Lord Voldemort holding his godfather Sirius in the Ministry of Magic and torturing him with the Cruciatus Curse . He is convinced that, like the attack on Ron's father, this corresponds to the reality. Hermione quickly fears, however, that Voldemort is taking advantage of his connection to Harry's thoughts to lure him into a trap. She persuades Harry to contact Sirius first to make sure he is missing. This is confirmed by the unfriendly elf of the Black family, Kreacher , by saying that his master has left the house and will never return. Dolores Umbridge ambushes Harry and his assistants and confronts them. In order to get information, she almost uses the Cruciatus curse on Harry. Hermione manages to lure the hated headmistress together with Harry into the forest, where the centaurs kidnap them. Umbridge also reveals that it was she who ordered the Dementors to attack Harry the previous summer in order to be able to expel Harry from school.

Harry flies with Hermione, Ron, Ginny , Neville and Luna on thestrals , horse-like magical creatures, to the Ministry of Magic. There it turns out, however, that Hermione was correct in her assumption and that Harry's dream was just a trap for Voldemort. He wants to force Harry to give him a certain prophecy about their common fate, since only Harry can take it for himself. In the Department of Mysteries, Harry and his friends are surprised by the Death Eaters, led by Lucius Malfoy. A bitter battle begins for the dusty glass ball in which the prophecy is located, and an apparently hopeless escape through the constantly changing corridors and rooms of the Department of Mysteries.

At the last moment, the Order of the Phoenix intervenes. They were alerted by Harry's hated teacher Severus Snape, who is also of the Order. Dumbledore himself is also present. In the process, the glass ball breaks and the prophecy remains unheard. Furthermore, Sirius Black meets a curse from his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange and he falls through a stone archway into the realm of death. Harry then follows Lestrange into the atrium, the entrance hall of the Ministry, where he meets Voldemort. In the ensuing skirmish with Dumbledore, Voldemort is far inferior, but tries to take possession of Harry on his escape. This fails, however, when Harry feels joy for a moment at the prospect of being able to see Sirius again after his apparently imminent death - a feeling that Voldemort has always been a stranger to and cannot bear. This is how Voldemort's shackles are released. When Harry wakes up, the Minister of Magic and many other Ministry employees are already in the room. They have now also witnessed Voldemort's return, which the Daily Prophet officially announced.

Back at Hogwarts, Dumbledore explains to Harry various backgrounds of his adventures, among other things Dumbledore reports on the prophecy that Sibyll Trelawney made about Harry and Voldemort sixteen years earlier in the presence of Dumbledore. It says at the beginning that "the one" who had the power to defeat Lord Voldemort would approach as soon as "July dies". Voldemort will "mark him as an equal" but the "chosen one" will have a power that Voldemort does not know. In addition, neither of the two can live while the other survives. This apparently means that Harry will either become a murderer or a victim of Voldemort. He also explains that he did not teach Harry Occlumency himself because he believed it was too dangerous to weaken Harry's mind just in his presence and to inform Voldemort of the close bond between Harry and Dumbledore.
