life and work

Lowe attended St Peter's High School in Stoke-on-Trent. He studied music and drama at the University of Hull , where he graduated in 1989. At the National Theater in London he worked for the productions War Horse , Caroline, or Change , A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum , Nation and Once In A Lifetime, among others . He worked as an orchestrator and music supervisor for Julian Crouch's The Wolves In The Walls and for Appointment With The Wicker Man at the National Theater of Scotland .

In 2003 he was musical director of the world premiere of Jerry Springer - The Opera , a musical by Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee . The National Theater's production was so successful that the play moved to London's West End in November 2003 and ran there until February 2005. It was the first musical to date to win all four renowned London awards for Best New Musical (What's On Stage, Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics Circle). Due to its vulgar language , its hearty jokes and surreal images, such as a troop of tap-dancing Ku Klux Klan members, the musical evoked massive protests from Christian fundamentalists and right-wing political groups such as the Christian Voice , especially after its BBC Two broadcast in early 2005 or the British National Party . The BBC received 63,000 complaints. Due to the protests, nine stages in Great Britain canceled the guest performance, but the UK tour 2006 was a great success with the public and the press.

Lowe was also musical director of the legendary musical Mamma Mia! in the West End of London and then supervised productions of this piece in Japan, South Korea, China and Sweden. He was also responsible for the Universal Pictures film adaptation with Meryl Streep in the lead role as musical director. He has also conducted several West End shows - for example The Full Monty , Once On This Island , Cats and Les Misérables . For his work as music supervisor and orchestrator of the musical Once , first on Broadway from December 2011 , then on London's West End , he has received several awards.

His compositional work includes settings for Martin Crimps The Misantrophe and David Hare's The Secret Rapture . A set to music of Hare's The Blue Room by David Hair premiered at the Chichester Festival Theater , Lettice And Lovage by Peter Schaffer with Lowes Musuj toured England. For BBC Radio 4 he wrote the score for Into Exile and Dear Exile . He also worked a. a. for the film Greetings From Tim Buckley , for The Lily's Revenge at the American Repertory Theater and for the musical The Light Princess by Tori Amos at the National Theater as music supervisor and arranger.

The directors Julian Crouch and Brian Mertes signed Loewe to the Salzburg Festival for the first time in 2013 , where he was responsible for the musical direction and orchestration of the new Jedermann production. The production was on the program of the festival until 2016. In 2015 in Salzburg, together with Julian Crouch and Sven-Eric Bechtolf, he worked on a “unique experimental version ” of the Threepenny Opera , which was performed at the Felsenreitschule under the title Mackie Messer - Eine Salzburger Dreigroschenoper . Ensemble 013 was founded specifically for the implementation of both projects; a chamber music orchestra of European elite musicians who feel at home in classical music as well as improvisation.
