Taylor Edwin Hackford (born December 31, 1944 in Santa Barbara , California ) is an American film director and film producer .

Taylor Hackford attended Santa Barbara High School and graduated from USC School of International Relations. After graduating from the USC School of Cinema-Television in 1968, he began filming documentaries for KCET, a Los Angeles public broadcaster. As one of the first filmmakers he established rock and roll programs on television.

He received an Associate Press Award and two Emmy Awards for his documentaries and for his journalistic contributions . For his first short film Teenage Father (1978), which he directed, wrote the screenplay and was his own producer, he was awarded an Oscar in the category "Best Short Film" . These prizes were followed by other awards and nominations. His 2004 film Ray has also won several awards, including an Oscar for Best Actor ( Jamie Foxx ).

Hackford was acting president of the Directors Guild of America from 2009 to 2013 .

Hackford is the father of American actor Rio Hackford (who played Stanley in the 1998 film Scotch and Milk ). Since December 31, 1997 he is married to the British actress Helen Mirren . The couple live alternately in Italy, England or California.
