Born in Queens (Original title: Queens Logic ) is an American comedy film from 1991 . Directed by Steve Rash and written by Tony Spiridakis .

action

At the beginning of the film you can see a boy climbing on a rope on a railway bridge. His friends stand on the floor and watch.

Patricia and Ray want to get married; the upcoming wedding is due to take place in a park near the railway bridge in Queens. The wedding gathers a group of old friends. This includes the unsuccessful musician Dennis, who just returned from Los Angeles . Vinny is an actor.

Eliot and Al are fish sellers. Al is married to Carla but tries to hit on other women. One day Carla is angry, demolishes the apartment and leaves him.

Ray, a painter, doubts whether to get married. He says having a hairdresser from Queens as a wife would not help his career. Buyers find his paintings by persuading their friends to buy them.

Al meets wealthy Grace in a shop. She reads the delivery address that Al leaves in the store and shows up at a party where all the friends are present. Al becomes violent when a man follows him - the man turns out to be a student supposed to film the wedding. Then Grace and Al drive away, they spend some time together in a cemetery. There, Grace Al gives advice on how to get rid of his negative energy .

Eliot is gay and single. Another man finds him attractive, but Eliot doesn't like the man mocking his friends. Eliot asks the man on the edge of the party to stop following him.

Al climbs onto the railway bridge, but fails to make the ascent. He drives to Carla, who lives with Patricia, and makes up with her. The other friends appear, Ray asks Patricia's forgiveness for his doubts. Carla receives a ring from Al, which she immediately throws Patricia as a wedding present.

Reviews

Roger Ebert compared the film with a number of other films that deal with the reunion of people at the age of 30, including the film The Great Frustration . In no less than 30 minutes of the first film, viewers wonder who the characters are and what connects them. You gradually recognize the connections and in the end you empathize with the characters. Some scenes would seem more like a string of skits than an elaborate plot. Ebert suspected that the film outgrown the tradition of the reunion films rather than the reality of Queens.

Peter Travers quoted an article in Rolling Stone magazine on February 21, 1991, according to which the screenwriter Tony Spiridakis, who grew up in Queens, had processed his own experiences. Travers praised the dialogues, but "criticized shoddy " ( " sloppy ") structure and " sentimentality " of the script. The cast was " fantastic " - Travers particularly mentioned Joe Mantegna, John Malkovich and Linda Fiorentino. The director was " sent " ( " deftly ").
