Mona Stangley has taken over the Chicken Ranch brothel , which enjoys an outstanding reputation in Texas , from the former boss. She has had a long affair with Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. When TV reporter Melvin P. Thorpe leads a crusade against the establishment, the sheriff puts his reputation on the line to save the ranch.

"If the story also contains a number of apt swipes at bourgeois hypocrisy, it is disappointing as a musical: the melodies are unimaginative and there are no brilliant songs," said the lexicon of international films .
Awards
Charles Durning was nominated for the 1983 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Governor . The film received two Golden Globe nominations; once for Dolly Parton as Best Actress - Comedy or Musical and another as Best Film - Comedy or Musical .
