Peter Masterson

Peter Masterson (born June 1, 1934 in Houston , Texas ; born Carlos Bee Masterson Jr. , † December 19, 2018 in Kinderhook , New York ) was an American actor , director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life and accomplishments

Masterson played his first film role in the war drama Treason in the Bay from 1966. In the SF horror film The Wives of Stepford (1975) he played the husband of Joanna Eberhart ( Katharine Ross ). His own daughter Mary Stuart Masterson appeared as one of his daughters in this film ; one of three children he has with actress Carlin Glynn , who was married in 1960 .

In the late 1970s, Masterson produced the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on Broadway , based on an article in Playboy magazine . This work earned him two Tony Award nominations . He directed a feature film for the first time in the drama A Trip to Bountiful (1985). For this work he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1986 and received the Mainichi Film Concours in 1988 . Both his wife Carlin Glynn and his daughter Alexandra Masterson played supporting roles in the western Blood Red (1989) starring Eric Roberts and Dennis Hopper , which he directed . In this film, Julia Roberts - as the cinematic sister of the character embodied by her brother - took on her first major role. In Masterson's thriller Night Game (1989), his wife played alongside Roy Scheider .

As the director of the television drama Lily Dale (1996), in which Mary Stuart Masterson took the title role, Peter Masterson received the Lone Star Film & Television Award in 1997 . As the director of the television drama Mermaid (2000) with Ellen Burstyn and Samantha Mathis , he was nominated for the Daytime Emmy in 2001. In Peter Masterson's drama Whiskey School (2005), Olympia Dukakis , Carlin Glynn and Mary Stuart Masterson appeared.

Peter Masterson died of complications from a fall in December 2018 at the age of 84.
