Manfred von Richthofen - The Red Baron is an American feature film from 1971 about the life of Freiherr Manfred von Richthofen . The filming locations were in Dublin and at the Weston Aerodrome in Leixlip in County Kildare ( Ireland ). The total budget was $ 900,000.

action

Von Richthofen, who is taking over the squadron from his predecessor Oswald Boelcke , does not believe in the prescribed camouflage. It is more in keeping with his knightly ideal that one confronts the enemy openly, which is why he has his planes painted in striking colors. His squadron was nicknamed the “Flying Circus”, and von Richthofen was nicknamed “the Red Baron” because of his nobility, his moral orientation and the red paint on his aircraft.

The enemy is initially impressed by the brave and blunt demeanor of the German squadron. But in the course of the war, the knightly fighting spirit is lost and the murderous brutality comes to the fore more and more often. Von Richthofen is increasingly alone with his attitude and is even more and more questioned by his comrades. On the opposing side, von Richthofen meets the like-minded Canadian pilot Roy Brown , who makes the fight against von Richthofen and defeating him his personal goal.

criticism

"Great aerial photos."

"In 2007, ' Der Rote Baron ' was another action adventure about the legendary fighter pilot, but it does not come close to the quality of Corman's version."
