Ernst Wilhelm Arnold Hoeppner , von Hoeppner since 1913 (born January 14, 1860 in Tonnin , Wollin Island ; † September 26, 1922 in Groß Mokratz , Wollin Island) was a Prussian general of the cavalry and from 1916 to 1918 as commanding general commander of the Germans Air forces in the First World War .

Life

origin

Ernst was the third son of the Prussian major Ernst Ferdinand Hoeppner (1813-1881) and his wife Wilhelmine Minna, née Kropf (1827-1896).

Military career

Hoeppner was in the 1872 military school in Potsdam and then in the main military academy trained. He then joined the Magdeburg Dragoon Regiment No. 6 in Stendal in 1879 as a second lieutenant . Then he attended the riding school in Hanover. After attending the War Academy from 1889 to 1892, he initially worked as a General Staff Officer in the 39th Division in Colmar , then worked for a short time in 1893 with the General Staff and then headed a squadron of the Kurmark Dragoon Regiment No. 14 as Rittmeister until 1898 . He was then a general staff officer in the 29th Division in Freiburg and later in the 39th Division in Colmar. In 1899 he was reassigned to the General Staff. In 1903 he was promoted to major. In 1904 he came to the IX as the first general staff officer . Army Corps to Altona . In 1906, as a lieutenant colonel, he took command of the 1st Electorate Hussar Regiment "King Humbert of Italy" No. 13 in Diedenhofen . In 1908 he was transferred to the VII Army Corps as Chief of Staff . In 1909 he was promoted to colonel . In September 1912, after his promotion to major general , Hoeppner took over the 4th Cavalry Brigade stationed in Bromberg .

On June 16, 1913, Hoeppner was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II .

First World War

Chief of Staff and Division Commander

In August 1914 he became Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army under General Max von Hausen , later under General Karl von Eine . On February 14, 1915, he was appointed commander of the 17th Reserve Division . Promoted to lieutenant general, Hoeppner became chief of the general staff of the 2nd Army in July . In April 1916 he was given the command of the 75th Reserve Division .

Cogen air

On November 12, 1916, he was entrusted by Kaiser Wilhelm II with the newly created position of "Commanding General of the Air Force" ( Kogenluft ) and returned to the headquarters .

His services there to the development of the air force were honored on April 8, 1917 with the award of the order Pour le Mérite . He received this together with his chief of staff, Lieutenant Colonel Hermann Thomsen .

post war period

After the November Revolution, Hoeppner was Commanding General of the XVIII from April 1919 . Army Corps . With its dissolution on September 30, 1919, Hoeppner submitted his departure and was put up for disposition , conferring the character of a general of the cavalry .

Hoeppner returned to his Groß-Mokratz estate on the island of Wollin, where he wrote his memoirs and died there three years later of the Spanish flu .

family

Hoeppner married Valentine von Pöppinghausen (1866–1955) on July 14, 1885, with whom he had three children: Busso (* / † 1887), Margot (1888–1967) and Gerd (1894–1939).
