Order of the Griffin
The Mecklenburg Griffin Order was on September 15, 1884 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. donated by Mecklenburg for the purpose of expressing the very highest special benevolence as well as the very highest recognition of outstanding services for public and visible expression . Order Grand Master was the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The statute was extended and supplemented on January 31, 1902 and June 7, 1904. Since 1904 the medal for Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz was awarded. At the same time, the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz advanced to the rank of Grand Master of the Order.
Order classes
The Order of the Griffin was divided into three classes:
- 1) Grand Cross
- 2a) Grand Commander , b) Commander's Cross , c) Honor Cross
- 3) Knight's Cross
The insignia of the Grand Cross could be awarded with swords, those of the Grand Commander's Cross with diamonds, and the Knight's Cross with the grand ducal crown.
Order decoration
The medal consists of a red enamelled, gold-bordered eight-pointed cross with a gold medallion, which shows a striding griffin. The Grand Cross is worn on a four-inch wide, watered light yellow ribbon with a narrow red border from the right shoulder to the left hip, the Grand Commander's Cross and the Commander's Cross on a narrower ribbon around the neck, the Cross of Honor on the left breast, the Knight's Cross on the left Chest or buttonhole. Otherwise, the classes only differ in size.
