Century Women (Original title: 20th Century Women ) is an American feature film from director Mike Mills from 2016 . It was released in German cinemas on May 18, 2017.

action

The action takes place in 1979 in Santa Barbara . Dorothea, a woman in her fifties, is the single mother of Jamie, a 15-year-old boy. When he has to go to the hospital after a faint game , she accuses him of his conformism and his taste in music. Jamie, on the other hand, accuses his mother of indulging in her loneliness after the divorce and doing nothing to be happy. Since Dorothea feels increasingly overwhelmed to steer Jamie in the "right direction", she asks Jamie's best friend Julie and her lodger Abbie for help.

Jamie doesn't understand that. He would like to have more than a friendly relationship with Julie. Feminist literature is supplied to Jamie by Abbie, recently cured of cervical cancer and suffering from the consequences. She goes with him to clubs where he can get out of himself. In order to understand her son better, Dorothea goes there too, together with William, another roommate of the old house. The two get closer and a liaison is emerging between them.

After a discussion with another teenager about the role of the clitoris in the sexual arousal of women, Jamie is beaten and his mother's car is smeared with the words "Art-Fag" ( art fagot ). At a meal together, Abbie talks openly about her menstruation , which Dorothea finds impossible. William saves the situation by being open about sex, whereupon Julie talks about her numerous boyish stories, which in turn displeases Jamie. When Jamie had another argument with his mother, he drove with Julie along the coast, where they wanted to stay in a hotel. There there is a conflict between Julie and Jamie, and Jamie runs away. Informed by Julie, Dorothea, Abbie and William immediately drive to the hotel. After Jamie's return he has a discussion with his mother, where she talks seriously about herself and her fears and hopes for the first time. As a result, their relationship improves, for example, she accepts that he bleaches his hair and helps him with it.

Narrative

In addition to the film plot, each of the five protagonists is presented individually in individual sequences. These sequences are built in the same structure; you find out the date and place of birth, receive information about previous life, (former) partners, children, illnesses, career and are informed about milestones in future life; Dorothea's chronicle goes until her death in 1999.

reception

Thomas Vorwerk von Filmstarts comes to the conclusion that the film is a “moving, often immensely funny and thrilling entertainment cinema at an impressively high level”. Georg Seeßlen called Mills in the time as a "cinematic style artists" who have been making the portrait of his mother. There is hardly any “social accuracy” and “closeness to people”, but in between “there are always attitudes of such perfect harmony and beauty that the heart opens again that just wanted to cramp”.

The film grossed around $ 6 million in American cinemas.

Awards

Annette Bening was also nominated as "best leading actress" for the following awards:
