action

The bouncer Tony Lip is Italian-American , comes from the working class and never got past seventh grade. Because the Copacabana Club in New York, where he works, closes for several months in 1962 due to renovations, Tony lets the African-American Dr. Hire Don Shirley, an educated, highly talented and cultured gentleman and pianist who is friends with the Kennedys and who lives in a museum apartment above Carnegie Hall , as a chauffeur . But Shirley is looking for more than just a driver. Tony is said to serve as his personal assistant on a concert tour that runs from New York to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky to the southern states, making sure he shows up on time for all performances. Shirley's fellow musicians, bassist George Dyer and Russian cellist Oleg, will take a separate car for the tour.

During their two-month road trip, the four of them experience ups and downs together. You'll need to plan your trip through the southern states with the Negro Motorist Green Book , a travel guide for African American drivers that lists the few accommodations, restaurants, and gas stations that accept black customers. George and Oleg, on the other hand, as whites, are not as restricted on their journey as their colleague. Time and again, the gap between Tony, with his rather simple way of thinking, and Don, with his cultivated manner, becomes clear, and the chauffeur can hardly believe that the pianist with doctorate has never heard of black musicians like Little Richard and Aretha Franklin . Also Chubby Checker knows this only by name. Tony not only brings him closer to the music of other black musicians on their journey, but also persuades him to learn to eat and enjoy fried chicken . In return, his “boss” helps him to find the right words when writing letters to his wife, if he wants to articulate his feelings towards her or to describe the beauty of the landscapes they traverse on their journey. He also gives him lessons in honesty and tries to improve his expression.

At first Don endures the humiliation of not being allowed to eat, sleep, or relieve himself where he wants to. One night, however, he ventured into a bar in Louisville by himself and was beaten up for being black. Tony shows up, alarmed by George, just in time to save the completely drunk Shirley from the hands of the rednecks . A short time later, Tony can only free his boss from custody in Macon by bribing the police. Don was caught there with a man, but Tony's experience in the New York club scene leaves him relaxed on such questions.

Instead of giving his last planned concert, Don Shirley goes to a music bar called Orange Bird with Tony Lip. Ruby's Roadhouse in Mandeville , Louisiana , served as the backdrop

When Tony meets shady acquaintances from New York in Memphis, his boss is concerned that he might leave him, but he reassures him that he wants to fulfill his assignment until the end of the concert tour. It is just before Christmas when they run into a police checkpoint in Little Rock . Tony answers the racist hostility of a police officer with a slap in the face. They are both being taken into custody and everything looks like they cannot meet their schedule. After a call from Don to Attorney General Bobby Kennedy and an instruction from the governor, they are allowed to continue.

So they reach Birmingham , Alabama, the last stop on their journey. Nat King Cole was once beaten half to death during a performance there, and there are still precise ideas about the position that blacks have. When Don wanted to eat with Tony, George and Oleg in the restaurant of the concert hall, where he was supposed to perform a few hours later, the manager Kindell forbade him to do so. Tony and Don finally agree to cancel the concert, even if this does not fulfill their contractual obligations. Instead, you visit the Orange Bird, a music club with an exclusively black audience. After Don had initially played a Chopin étude on the piano by himself, he accompanied the musicians present during their jazz performance.

That same night, the two make their way back to New York. They get caught in a snowstorm and are stopped again by a police officer who only draws their attention to a flat tire. Because Tony really wants to be back on Christmas Eve, but is very tired, Don drives the car himself on the last stretch. Tony shows up with his family just in time. Tony invites Don Shirley and he is welcomed into the family.

production

Staff, cast and dubbing

Directed by Peter Farrelly . After Movie 43, it is his second film that he shot without his brother Bobby. He wrote the script with Brian Hayes Currie and Nick Vallelonga , Tony Lip's son.

In November 2017 it was announced that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and multiple Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen had won the lead roles. Mortensen played Tony Lip and Ali played Don Shirley. Also in November 2017, the cast of Linda Cardellini to play Lip's wife Dolores was announced. Vallelonga was enthusiastic about the actress, who plays his mother Dolores in the film. In the film, she wears the real jewelry from Vallelonga's mother. Mortensen's necklace, which he wears throughout the film, with the medallion of the Virgin Mary, belonged to Vallelonga's father. Nick Vallelonga's brother Frank took over the role of Tony Lip's brother Rudy in the film, while the real Rodolfo "Rudy" Vallelonga played Tony's father Nicola. Nick Vallelonga himself can be seen in a small role and plays Augie. While Shirley and Vallelonga take up most of the film, the other two members of the Donald Shirley Trio appear continuously in concerts and breaks. In the film, their names are Oleg and George and are played by Dimiter D. Marinov and Mike Hatton . At the time, Shirley's true bandmates were bassist Ken Fricker and cellist Juri Taht. Both played with Shirley for several decades. Fricker died in 2013.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Clemens Frohmann on behalf of Neue Tonfilm München . Matti Klemm lends his voice to Don Shirley in the German version, Jacques Breuer speaks Tony Lip, Dascha Lehmann his wife Dolores.

Filming and production design

One of the locations: the Tulane University campus

Sean Porter acted as cameraman . The shooting took place from November 2017 to January 2018. Except for one day when they were shooting in New York, the recordings were made all over Louisiana. One difficulty was to find suitable locations for the scenes in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa and the Bronx, the director said. Nick Vallelonga, son of Viggo Mortensen's character and screenwriter, contributed photos from childhood for Tony Lip's apartment in New York. Don Shirley's apartment above Carnegie Hall was recreated by the set designers with all the bells and whistles, including the pianist's throne.

The International House Hotel on Camp Street and the Carver Theater in New Orleans served as backdrops for the former Copacabana Club in New York where Lip worked . Other locations in New Orleans included the Clover Grill in the French Quarter , the McAlister Auditorium on the Tulane University campus , the W. P. Brown House and the Orpheum Theater , where the film premiered as part of the New Orleans Film Festival . Further recordings were made in Benny's Place and at the Northshore Broadcasting Building in Hammond . In Louisiana they shot in places that were in the Green Book , such as a hotel that used to be reserved for whites and a former juke joint .

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Kris Bowers . The soundtrack, which includes 31 pieces of music, was released as a download by Milan Records in mid-November 2018. A CD followed in December 2018. It also includes songs by The Blue Jays, Timmy Shaw, The Blackwells, Jack's Four and Bob Kelly, as well as pieces by the Don Shirley Trio such as Blue Skies . The Orange Bird Blues Band contributed Let's Roll and Backwood Blues .

The film celebrated its world premiere on September 11, 2018 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival . The European premiere took place on September 27, 2018 at the Zurich Film Festival , where the production was shown as the opening film. Also in September 2018 there was a screening at the Leipzig Film Art Fair . The cinema release in the United Kingdom was on January 11, 2019, in Germany on January 31, 2019. Film analysis

Biographical and authenticity

Green Book is based on the life story of Tony Lip , who became the chauffeur of pianist Don Shirley in the 1960s . The Italian-American bouncer, who grew up in the Bronx and had little education, was hired in 1962 to drive Shirley for a concert tour from New York through the southern United States before the civil rights era . Lip later became known for his role as Mafia boss Carmine Lupertazzi, Sr. in the television series The Sopranos himself. He also played the gangster Philip Giaccone of the Bonanno family in the film Donnie Brasco . His wife Dolores died in 1999, Lip himself died in early 2013. Three months later, Don Shirley also died.

Don Shirley's brother Maurice criticized the film for misrepresenting the relationship between the two main characters: “My brother never saw Tony as a 'friend'; he was a clerk, his driver (who was annoyed about wearing a uniform and hat) that is why context and nuance are so important. The fact that a successful, wealthy black artist would hire domestic workers who did NOT look like him shouldn't be lost in the broadcast. ”Nick Vallelonga, the film's writer and son of Tony Lip, disagreed and stressed that both were friends - there was "a lot of information that the Shirley family does not have". Before his death, he spoke to Shirley about this story and Shirley approved it.

Structure and figure analysis

Andreas Borcholte of Spiegel Online brings to the relationship between Shirley and lip the concept of White savior , 'said the white savior into play: "This figure appears in numerous films, if it applies, an African American character in an institutionally racist caused misery. ”The difference to other films in which this appears, is that the White Savior plays the leading role in Green Book , of which there is no doubt from the start, if Lip is greasy like a GoodFellas cliché as a shrewd nightclub -Bouncers will be introduced from the Bronx, Borcholte said. However, Hannah Lühmann from Welt Online finds Lip's entire purification process bizarrely implausible . The burly Italian-American, who gets by with odd jobs, has countless friends, two children and a lovable wife. Other reviewers also noted that the story the Green Book tells tries too much to fit into a series like White Savior films like Blood Diamond or The Blind Side . But the reversal of this principle was also criticized. So called Indie Wire Shirley's character as a "Magical Negro" whose sole purpose was to change a white man for the better.

When they first meet, Tony is greeted by Don Shirley in a kind of ecclesiastical robe with brocade embroidery and numerous chains around his neck, which is a dramatic outfit, and takes his place on his throne. The educated, highly talented and cultured gentleman who is friends with the Kennedys is, however, equipped with a certain height of fall . As a guest of honor, for example, he experiences a particular humiliation at a performance when he is not even allowed to use the toilet that the white people use. Whites cheer him on when he performs, but then treat him again like other blacks. On the other hand, Don Shirley seems too cultured to belong to them. Don doesn't belong to any group, doesn't know who and what he is, and has become lonely because of this. Hannah Lühmann from Welt Online remarks that during her trip, Shirley's opening to jazz music could be observed, while Lip, in return, weaned himself off of his grossest racist resentments. "Nonetheless, one should ask oneself whether, by working through such templates, one is ultimately only reproducing the clichés that one wants to confuse, so when the caricaturally exaggeratedly distinguished behavior of a black man is already playing with clichés."

It wasn't until later in the film that Tony found out that his boss was not going on the concert tour out of financial motivation, but would earn a lot more money from his appearances in New York without having to expose himself to hostility. However, Don also has to play popular music in New York, for which he was not actually trained in Russia. There he had studied classical music, including Chopin and Beethoven. Only at a small spontaneous concert at the Orange Bird in Birmingham does he dare to play a piece of classical music in public. He should actually have become a classical concert pianist, but his music has to move where everyone can follow it, between jazz and classical. Carolin Würfel from Zeit Online writes that despite all the adversity and resentment and all violence, he does not break off this journey, but keeps alive the belief that his music could manage to touch people. That is also what makes the character Shirley so special. Ellen Jilg from Vision Kino explains that it was only when Don Shirley's self-confidence had grown that he refused to appear. On the other hand, Tony recognizes through Don's behavior that there are alternative courses of action besides violence.

Movie title and genre

The title of the film is derived from the travel guide The Negro Motorist Green Book .

The Negro Motorist Green Book used by the protagonists of the film , according to which they plan their trip, was a real existing travel guide for African-American travelers, published annually between 1936 and 1966, and gave the film its name. According to this travel guide, the real Lip had planned the logistics of Shirley's concert tour as they looked for motels, restaurants, and gas stations that were popular with African-Americans in the southern states ruled by the Jim Crow laws, which oppressed the black population . The book served as a guide for black motorists to avoid the dangers that threatened them on their travels, particularly beyond the Mason-Dixon Line .

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online explains that despite some moving scenes, Green Book is not a drama, but a buddy movie aimed primarily at the stomach in the tradition of Escape in Chains , The Soldiers of Fortune or, in other words, Miss Daisy and your chauffeur . Green Book seems similar from that time with its naive premise that all evil in the world can be overcome as long as black and white get closer and understand each other personally over social hurdles, says Borcholte.

Eric Kohn of IndieWire says the film tells a good-mood story about two men from different worlds and about overcoming prejudice in a less pleasant time. Despite some tricky situations both of them get into, Peter Farrelly manages to juggle these scenes with a delicate balance of humor and a bittersweet mood, such as those found in the comedies he shot with his brother Bobby.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The statement of reasons for approval states: “The road movie about racism , class differences and friendship is told in a calm manner and focuses on the two differentiated and sympathetic main characters. The depiction of racist hostility is emotionally very intense and can disturb preschool children. But already 6-year-olds are able to process what is happening, as the basic attitude of the film is positive and ultimately tolerance and friendship are emphasized. The historical setting and the humor also provide relief. "

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has received approval from 78 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 7.2 out of a possible 10 points.

In the US, but also in the German-language criticism, there was talk of a feel-good film about racism and a procedure in clichés, but also their reversal. Hannah Lühmann from Welt Online explains that the material lives from an initially exciting reversal of the most common clichés, with the categories “race” and “class” being played against each other during Tony Lips and Don Shirley's road trip. Carolin Würfel from Zeit Online thinks that Green Book is quickly reaching its limits: "The film remains superficial in many places and is so busy with presenting prejudices that it sometimes becomes a cliché itself." Mahershala Ali told Spiegel Online about the criticism of being in a feel-good film about racism : “I wonder why it devalues the film when it transports edification. [...] I think it's a great achievement to tell a story with so many ups and downs - and still dismiss the audience with a good feeling in the end. And I think it's important that there is still a place for this type of film. We also need emotional diversity. "

Thomas Schultze von Blickpunkt: Film thinks that Farrelly understands perfectly how to cushion even the most violent moments with sometimes bitter humor, but above all his comedy experience is reflected in perfect timing, in the economy and elegance of the narrative and in the knowledge that you are can only inspire his audience if they love the main characters. Mahershala Ali, in his role as Don Shirley, describes Schultze as an educated cosmopolitan who expresses himself well and always looks fabulous in his tailored suits. About the chemistry between Ali and Mortensen, he says: “You could hardly imagine two more different types, and it is a great pleasure to watch the two of them after an initial dislike of each other on their trip through a bigoted America of racial segregation and xenophobia Developing respect for one another. ”At the same time, racism and class differences were revealed in a wide variety of ways, and the quality of Green Book also lies in its differentiation, says Schultze:“ Things are literally not just black and white. The fact that in the end it is clear that despite all the differences there is always the possibility of common ground makes Peter Farrelly's crowdpleaser a glimmer of hope that leaves you in high spirits from the cinema. "

Deadline.com's Pete Hammond says the film opens your eyes to the ways blacks are still treated in some of the least developed regions of America. The great film is not only tailor-made for the upcoming Oscar season, but could also become a box-office hit. Basically the film, which has humor, strong emotionality, humanity and an understanding of all races, is a cross between Miss Daisy and her chauffeur , In the Heat of the Night , Hidden Figures and so for an award as best film in the upcoming one Academy Awards, or at least for a nomination.

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 321.8 million. In Germany, the film recorded 1,586,164 visitors, placing it in 16th place in the 2019 annual charts .

Use in school lessons

"We only serve white customers." Many hotels and restaurants were closed to blacks, like this one in Lancaster, Ohio in 1938.

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film for the subjects German, English, history, social studies / community studies and ethics and offers materials for the film for the classroom. There, Esther Buss writes that in English and history classes, the film offers an opportunity to deal with racial segregation in the USA before the civil rights law came into force. Some situations in the film, such as the experience of police arbitrariness , could also be placed in the context of more recent incidents that made the topicality of the topic visible. The question of identity is relevant for both social studies and ethics , Buss continued. In terms of film analysis , there is also an in-depth study of the road movie genre and its dramaturgy.
